Ruben Amorim to brutally 'axe four Manchester United stars' from pre-season tour

Daily Mirror6 hours ago

Manchester United could be set to bid farewell to some huge players this summer with Ruben Amorim seemingly nudging some towards the Old Trafford exit door before the Red Devils return
Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho are among four misfits set to be axed from Manchester United 's pre-season tour. The Red Devils are set to travel to the US in July for a clutch of lucrative matches as part of their preparations for the new campaign.
They will take on Premier League rivals West Ham United, Bournemouth and Everton as part of that tour. But Ruben Amorim is set to take a brutal approach to his squad with many stars expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.

According to The Sun, four out-of-favour stars are set to be left behind at Carrington for the tour should they fail to seal moves away from United before then. That includes academy graduate Rashford after Aston Villa turned down the chance to sign him permanently following his loan spell.

The forward has since been linked with Barcelona. He is set to be joined by Jadon Sancho after he too saw a permanent move to Chelsea collapse following a loan spell last season.
Napoli have since emerged for his services but are struggling to afford his wages as it stands. Alejandro Garnacho also faces little prospect of a future at United - the Argentine having also been linked with Napoli.
The final player that Amorim wants to leave behind is Antony. The Brazilian winger has struggled since his big-money move from Ajax and while he impressed with Real Betis last term, the Spanish side are yet to make a renewed move.
Explaining Amorim's hardline stance, a source quoted by The Sun said: 'Amorim is stamping his authority on the club. It was hard arriving mid-season but he now has the opportunity to shape the team in his image. And he's wasting no time.
'He only wants players who would die for the shirt and are on board with his ideas. He also wants a smaller squad to create an intimate team bond so that everyone gets enough game time to be at peak fitness when called upon. He doesn't want any bad apples or distractions.'

While Amorim is set to axe a few faces from his squad for United's pre-season commitments, there could also be a few new additions to the squad. Matheus Cunha is due to join up with the Red Devils following his £62.5m move from Wolves.
He could yet be joined by Bryan Mbeumo, who remains at the heart of a tug of war between United and Tottenham. As it stands, he favours a move to Old Trafford but United chiefs are yet to agree terms with the Bees over the Cameroon forward.

The extraordinary rise has been bankrolled by US businessman John Textor, who also owns Lyon in France and is trying to sell his stake in Crystal Palace. It is also about wonderful work by the scouting department - exemplified by the case of centre forward Igor Jesus. The Brazil international scored the only goal as Botafogo shocked PSG with a 1-0 win and joins Nottingham Forest after the Club World Cup. The 24-year-old began his professional career with Coritiba in the south of Brazil, where he showed promise but not much more. And then he found his way to Shabab Al Alhi in the Arab Emirates. This took him off the radar screen of most people - but not Botafogo. He did well in his new surroundings, and even had an offer to take on local citizenship and play for the national team. He declined, declaring that he was prepared to wait for an opportunity to play for Brazil. Amid the recent turmoil of the Brazilian national team he soon lost his place. But he will be back - especially because he gave new coach Carlo Ancelotti a powerful demonstration of his merits. Ancelotti arrived to coach Brazil at the end of May. Nottingham Forest's other signing, gangling centre back Jair Cunha, launched himself into a bad tackle and was sent off. Botafogo had to win the game with ten men - and Igor Jesus ensured that they did. Textor has described him as the perfect centre forward. In the final of last year's Libertadores against fellow Brazilians Atletico MIneiro, Botafogo had a man sent off in the first thirty seconds. Igor Jesus had to dedicate himself to being the first line of defence, and carried out the task tirelessly. In this game against Universidad de Chile he had to be the first line of defence and the cutting edge of the attack - Botafogo had to win. Every time he got on the ball he was a nightmare for the Chilean defenders and he scored the goal that takes his side through to the knock out phase. Against PSG he had to go through his repertoire against much better defenders. 11 He dominated the PSG backline all game Credit: AP 11 He's been compared to former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba Credit: Reuters And he worried Lucas Beraldo and William Pacho all through the game, giving options for the besieged Botafogo defenders to clear their lines, combining with his midfielders, and charging towards Gianluigi Donnarumma to score - with the help of a deflection - the only goal in a famous victory. Textor appeared after the match to thank Igor Jesus by pretending to polish his boot. Igor Jesus is looking increasingly like a modern day version of Didier Drogba - a one man forward line capable of performing every function a striker needs to do and able to take on entire defences all on his own. His performance would not have been enough to secure victory without the splendid disciplined defending of his team-mates in which Jair Cunha played the game of his life. He can struggle for balance and though he scored with a towering header in the opening game against Seattle Sounders, he had plenty of defensive problems. But he rose to the challenge in fine style against PSG. He was well protected, and able to spend the game defending in reduced space. But he kept his head well under pressure and made Forest fans hope that Igor Jesus will not be the only Brazilian signing making an impact next season at the City Ground.

Scotland captain Andy Robertson has been urged to make the brave decision to depart Liverpool this summer and take advantage of the 'great opportunity' presented to him in La Liga. The 31-year-old defender has been linked with a summer switch to La Liga giants Atletico Madrid over the last week, with the imminent arrival £40million arrival of Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez throwing his Anfield future into serious doubt. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claimed the Spanish giants viewed Robertson as their top target in the summer transfer window, though they are only interested in paying 'paying a small fee', and had targeted Aston Villa's Lucas Digne as an alternative. However, the 84-cap Scotland international has been told he not pass up on the opportunity to make the switch to the Diego Simeone's side, with a move to the Metropolitano Stadium described as 'fantastic' by ex-Liverpool favourite Didi Hamann. Andy Robertson has been told to leave Liverpool amid uncertainly over his future in the starting XI. | PA 'Robertson alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold have been the best full-backs in the league for the last seven or eight years,' said Hamann. 'They were a huge reason why Liverpool have been successful. Robertson came in for criticism last season but I think he still did a brilliant job, but if Milos Kerkez comes for a big fee then he will be the starting left-back you feel. 'Atletico Madrid have now been linked to Robertson and I think it would be a great opportunity for him. He has joked that Liverpool are linked to every left-back in the world and maybe sometimes it's best to leave when you can see you might be out of favour. Liverpool could win it all next season but if Atletico come in for him, they are a fantastic club with great supporters, he might just join Trent in Madrid. I think if Kerkez signs, it's 50/50 for Robertson.' Arsenal to break seven-year transfer rule for Benjamin Sesko after £60m deal

Arsenal are interested in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and are taking a different approach to the transfer window as Mikel Arteta looks to solve his side's problems in attack Arsenal have taken a specific approach to their transfer dealings since Mikel Arteta took over as Gunners boss. The club targeting RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko would represent a departure from Arsenal's usual tactics as they look to sign a player from the Bundesliga for the first time since 2018. The Gunners may have bought players from across Europe and even the Brazilian market in recent years, but the Premier League has remained the preferred shopping destination. From Aaron Ramsdale to Ben White, Arsenal have often turned to players with experience in England. That is because Premier League proven players are a known quantity and are more likely to succeed if they are already performing well in the top-flight. ‌ Predicting the success of players changing country and league style is a trickier task. There's a general consensus that those from La Liga will fare well. Meanwhile, Arsenal have primarily targeted defenders from Serie A. Ligue 1 is full of young talent and South America is a similar treasure trove of promising players. However, Arsenal have chosen to steer clear of signing players from Germany. ‌ Arsenal's squad is a blend of academy players and a strong Premier League core - White and Declan Rice have elevated their game, while Kai Havertz has adapted well. Even Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus played their roles expertly for 12 to 18 months after arriving from Manchester City. New additions to the league have come in the form of Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard from either side of Madrid, as well as centre-back partnership Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba signing from French clubs. Riccardo Calafiori and Takehiro Tomiyasu caught the eye in Serie A before making their moves to north London. However, Arsenal have not signed a first team player from the Bundesliga since 2018. A move for Sesko could change that. Arsenal missed out on deal for the striker months ago ahead of the Euros and his stock has continued to rise, as has his price. The last players to join the club from Germany were Benrd Leno and Sokratis seven summers ago, but the move for Sesko is more akin to Arsenal's £60million move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang earlier that year. Aubameyang proved successful but had already established himself on the elite stage, unlike Sesko. He had netted 13, 16, 25, and then 31 Bundesliga goals in his four full seasons at Borussia Dortmund before departing with a record of 13 in 16. Aubameyang also had a Champions League record to brag about and was considerably older than Sesko, being in his mid-20s. Sesko, on the other hand, is still relatively young compared to Aubameyang. There's an eagerness to tap into his raw potential before it fully blossoms, but this approach carries its own risks. ‌ Now 22, Sesko put together another impressive scoring season in Germany and showed exactly why he has attracted interest from elsewhere. However, there are concerns about how Sesko might adjust to England. When the striker could prove pivotal to Arsenal's title hopes, there are various factors to consider. Given the success of players moving from Germany to England, it's understandable why there is caution. ‌ Havertz's move to Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020 is a prime example. Initially, opposition players and his own manager pushed him around the pitch in search of the perfect position. Havertz eventually settled into the role of a striker. Arsenal had hopes of converting him back into an attacking No.8 from midfield, but he has been forced to cover up front instead, a job he now performs well. He bulked up, lost some of his flair, and is now a functional target man at times. He's strong in the air but lacks the finesse he initially brought with him. Sesko probably wouldn't have to make such a drastic change as he is already a striker, but there will be a period of adaptation. Both Timo Werner and Christopher Nkunku signed for Chelsea from RB Leipzig and struggled to hit the mark for various reasons. Dominik Szoboszlai has had more luck at Liverpool but plays in a deeper role. Arsenal seem determined to do something they haven't done for seven years in their attempt to purchase Sesko from the Bundesliga. Before the signing of Aubameyang, Arsenal's last transfers from Germany were Lukas Podolski in 2012 and Per Mertesacker the year before. Arsenal have a peculiar relationship with Bundesliga players, but they hope Sesko can rekindle the spark. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
