James Gunn Says Disney+ Content Mandates ‘Killed' Marvel

James Gunn is giving his version of a eulogy for Marvel. The Co-Chairman and CEO of DC Studios, who also helmed the MCU's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' trilogy, told Rolling Stone that it was in part the 'mandates' for more content on Disney+ that 'killed' the MCU IP. Gunn pointed to how he is looking to lead WBD's DC Studios in an entirely different way.
'That wasn't fair. It wasn't right. And it killed them,' Gunn said of the Disney studio demand for more Marvel projects, which led to a so-called MCU fatigue at the box office prior to 'Thunderbolts.' 'We don't have the mandate [at DC] to have a certain amount of movies and TV shows every year. So we're going to put out everything that we think is of the highest quality. We're obviously going to do some good things and some not-so-good things, but hopefully on average everything will be as high-quality as possible. Nothing goes before there's a screenplay that I personally am happy with.'

Indeed, Gunn would never more forward into filming without a completed screenplay, which is why 'The Batman 2' has been delayed for so long. The sequel starring Robert Pattinson was announced in 2022.
'Batman's my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally,' Gunn said. 'And it's not — I'm not writing Batman, but I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he's incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman. So outside of the stuff that I'm doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman scripts.'
He continued, 'Every single Batman story has been told. It seems like half the comics that have come out of DC over the past 30 years have Batman in them. He's the most famous superhero in the world and the most popular superhero in the world. And people love him because he's interesting, but also having so much of him out there can also make him boring. So how do you create that property that's fun to watch?'
Gunn cited how rushing into production has created a major problem in Hollywood as a whole.
'I do believe that the reason why the movie industry is dying is not because of people not wanting to see movies,' Gunn said. 'It's not because of home screens getting so good. The number-one reason is because people are making movies without a finished screenplay.'

Destin Daniel Cretton is directing the feature, which will shoot in England this summer and has a July 31, 2026, release date. Much of the movie remains shrouded in mystery. Movie rumor websites have listed upwards of a dozen possible villains, from crime bosses to alien symbiotes, who could appear in the feature, as well as a couple of different versions of the Hulk. The only thing clear at this stage is that Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are reprising their roles as MJ and best friend Ned, although how substantial those roles will be remains unclear. And Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is the big new addition so far. The story takes place after the events of the previous movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which the entire world knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man and then had that knowledge erased. Having Bernthal as the Punisher seems to point to a slightly more grounded angle on the story as the character hails from the gritty street corner of Marvel's universe and, in the comics at least, uses fists, knives and guns to tussle with bad guys, rather than spells or fancy tech. But hey, having him square off against a rampaging Hulk could be fun, too. Bernthal first showed up as vigilante Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, in Marvel's Daredevil Netflix series, then starred in his own series that ran for two seasons. He recently returned for a few episodes in Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+. Marvel is betting on more Punisher and Bernthal in the months and years to come. The character is set to return for season two of Born Again and Marvel is bringing Bernthal back for a Punisher stand-alone feature for Disney+. Bernthal is co-writing the latter. Curiously, one nonnegotiable he had for his return to Daredevil was maintaining the character's violent, R-rated feel. It will be interesting to see how that translates into the more kid-friendly tone of the Spider-Man movies. Bernthal and Holland have a charmed history together when it comes to Marvel. The duo were working on the 2017 feature Pilgrimage when prepping to audition for their Marvel roles. The actors helped each other with their audition tapes. This year, Bernthal's big-screen output has included starring opposite Ben Affleck in The Accountant 2 for Amazon and appearing in the Rami Malek thriller The Amateur for 20th Century Fox. Jon Bernthal is officially bringing the Punisher into Spider-Man: Brand New Day ! The next installment in Tom Holland's Spidey saga. Frank Castle is actually stepping into the Sony/Marvel Spider-Verse, and this is for real, and it's awesome! The film, which begins shooting this summer in England, will be directed by Shang-Chi 's Destin Daniel Cretton and is set to hit theaters July 31, 2026. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are expected to return as MJ and Ned, and Stranger Things breakout Sadie Sink has joined the cast in an undisclosed role. The story picks up after the reality-resetting events of No Way Home , where no one remembers Peter Parker is Spider-Man. That gives the narrative a clean slate, and apparently a perfect window to drop in Marvel's most brutal antihero. Bernthal's take on Frank Castle was first introduced in Netflix's Daredevil series and later spun off into The Punisher . He recently returned in Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again, and not only is he starring in Season 2—he's also co-writing a solo Punisher special. So yeah, the man is in. This new crossover has been years in the making, even if unintentionally. Bernthal and Tom Holland actually helped each other score their Marvel gigs while working together on the 2017 film Pilgrimage. Bernthal told Jimmy Kimmel Live: 'We did a film about seven or eight years ago. That was where both Tom did his audition for Spider-Man and I did my audition for Punisher. We actually made each other's audition tapes on that film.' He even had a hand in giving Holland some iconic Spider-Man flair: 'I gave him the note, 'Tom, maybe you should run up that wall and do a double backflip and then start the scene.' And he was like, 'Yeah, you think I should do that? That's not too much?' I was like, 'I don't think any of these other fools are able to do that,' and he in fact did that.' Now, after years of parallel stories, they're finally sharing the screen in the MCU. With Peter navigating a world that doesn't know who he is, and Castle never caring much for red tape, the dynamic between these two could be explosive. We don't know exactly how the Punisher will fit into Brand New Day , but I can't wait to see how this comes together! One's a neighborhood-friendly hero trying to stay under the radar. This July will mark the release of 'Superman,' the first film in a rebooted DC universe with a new cast taking on a slew of iconic heroes and villains. While you wait for the last son of Krypton to fly back to the big screen, here's everything you need to know about 2025's 'Superman.' 'Superman' releases nationwide on July 11, 2025. The film marks David Corenswet's first time in the capes, boots, and — yes — trunks as Superman. In a Tweet, Gunn said Krypto was partially based on Ozu, a dog he rescued from a hoarding situation and who 'was problematic to say the least.' 'I remember thinking, 'Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?' – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life.' 'Creature Commandos,' an animated series Gunn created for Max, became the first official project of the DCU when it released in late 2024 and early 2025. The series, which features the first appearance of Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr., has already been renewed for a second season. After 'Superman,' the next DCU project will be the second season of 'Peacemaker,' which premieres Aug. 21. Because 'Peacemaker' began as part of the previous DC franchise (featuring cameos from 2017's Justice League lineup), the second season will serve as both a continuation and a soft reboot of the series to integrate it into the new universe. It seems Gunn has fully adopted the messiness of comic book canon. Both Batman and Wonder Woman, among other heroes, additionally have new films on the way. Though 'Superman' does not directly adapt any one storyline, Gunn stated on Threads that he drew inspiration from a number of specific comics and adaptations. Superman's logo in the film reflects a costume worn by the character in Mark Waid and Alex Ross' 'Kingdom Come.' Released in 1996, the story features an older Superman returning to heroics after becoming disillusioned by a new generation of violent vigilantes. The use of this logo may signal a thematic connection to 'Kingdom Come' in the film, as trailers hint at Superman grappling with his place in a world of political agendas and corporate-backed heroes. 'Kingdom Come' appears in a 'Superman' tie-in box set releasing in August. Also included are Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's 'Superman for All Seasons,' Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's 'All-Star Superman,' and Alan Moore and Curt Swan's 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?' — three classic Superman adventures featuring the early and final days of the Man of Steel.
