Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors While it seems that a majority of people are excited for the upcoming DC Studios film "Superman" to finally hit theaters, a vocal subset of fans seem to be vehemently against the film and director James Gunn. In a post on Reddit, a user called for fellow fans of the "Snyderverse," DC Comics movies that take place in the universe created by director Zack Snyder, to boycott "Superman" by reserving tickets without paying for them and review bombing the film online. "Stand up and fight for SnyderVerse on July 11," the user said. "Fight for our SnyderVerse on the imposter 'Superman' release day." More Entertainment: James Gunn Calls Out Zack Snyder Fans Threatening 'Superman' "Gunn fired the first shot and killed the SnyderVerse, and here is our chance to take the fight back to him," the user concluded after detailing ways to hurt the movie financially. Shortly afterward, Gunn replied, showing that he wasn't worried about the post having any effect on "Superman" at the box office. DC's unlikely Clayface movie casts its lead actor after an "exhaustive search" as DC boss James Gunn says he and The Batman director Matt Reeves were "blown away" by the audition

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's official: one of DC Studios' most unlikely films has found its lead actor, as Tom Rhys Harries has been cast as Clayface based on an audition that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn says left him and The Batman director Matt Reeves "blown away." "After a long and incredibly exhaustive search, we finally have our DCU Clayface in Tom Rhys Harries," Gunn says on social media. "Both Matt Reeves and I were just blown away by this guy, and can't wait for you to see this film, directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan." Clayface initially joined the DC Universe slate thanks to the strength of Flanagan's script, which fast-tracked the film into development. A version of Clayface appeared in the Creature Commandos animated show, where he was voiced in grunts and roars by Alan Tudyk, though it's actually unclear whether the version of Clayface in the live-action film will be the same character in the show. As it happens, there are actually numerous versions of Clayface in comics. The most famous is Matt Hagen, the second Clayface and the first to possess shapeshifting clay powers, thanks to his involvement in Batman: The Animated Series. The other most famous is Basil Karlo, the original Clayface, who started out as an actor driven to commit murder while in disguise before gaining clay powers of his own. It's been rumored that a version of the Basil Karlo Clayface will be the villain of the long (long, long) awaited The Batman 2, with the Penguin streaming series introducing characters with connections to Karlo. That said, none of that will have much bearing on how the DCU Clayface goes down, as it will take place in the core DC Universe movie continuity, while The Batman exists separately in its own world. Clayface is set to be released on September 11, 2026, as part of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. James Gunn Says Disney+ Content Mandates ‘Killed' Marvel

James Gunn is giving his version of a eulogy for Marvel. The Co-Chairman and CEO of DC Studios, who also helmed the MCU's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' trilogy, told Rolling Stone that it was in part the 'mandates' for more content on Disney+ that 'killed' the MCU IP. Gunn pointed to how he is looking to lead WBD's DC Studios in an entirely different way. 'That wasn't fair. It wasn't right. And it killed them,' Gunn said of the Disney studio demand for more Marvel projects, which led to a so-called MCU fatigue at the box office prior to 'Thunderbolts.' 'We don't have the mandate [at DC] to have a certain amount of movies and TV shows every year. So we're going to put out everything that we think is of the highest quality. We're obviously going to do some good things and some not-so-good things, but hopefully on average everything will be as high-quality as possible. Nothing goes before there's a screenplay that I personally am happy with.' More from IndieWire How Cinespia Turned a Cemetery Into L.A.'s Weekend Hot Spot Jon Hamm Says He Prefers to Play 'Sinner' Characters: 'Superman Can Be Kind of Boring, No Offense' Indeed, Gunn would never more forward into filming without a completed screenplay, which is why 'The Batman 2' has been delayed for so long. The sequel starring Robert Pattinson was announced in 2022. 'Batman's my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally,' Gunn said. 'And it's not — I'm not writing Batman, but I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he's incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman. So outside of the stuff that I'm doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman scripts.' He continued, 'Every single Batman story has been told. It seems like half the comics that have come out of DC over the past 30 years have Batman in them. He's the most famous superhero in the world and the most popular superhero in the world. And people love him because he's interesting, but also having so much of him out there can also make him boring. So how do you create that property that's fun to watch?' Gunn cited how rushing into production has created a major problem in Hollywood as a whole. 'I do believe that the reason why the movie industry is dying is not because of people not wanting to see movies,' Gunn said. 'It's not because of home screens getting so good. The number-one reason is because people are making movies without a finished screenplay.' Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors The end is nigh for Netflix's "The Sandman" and the newest trailer for the second and final season teases an epic conclusion to the series. Dream will have to contend with gods, monsters, and the ranks of Hell itself. You can watch the new trailer below. Read More: James Gunn Reacts to Rumors 'The Batman 2' Is Canceled After three years, "The Sandman" returns to Netflix with six episodes on July 3. Five more episodes will arrive, ending the story of Tom Sturridge's Dream, on July 24. Netflix has also announced a special bonus episode focusing on Kirby Howell-Baptiste's Death which premieres July 31. Tom Sturridge as Dream in "The Sandman." Tom Sturridge as Dream in "The Sandman." Netflix The hero of "The Sandman" is known by many names including Dream and Morpheus. Fittingly, he is the ruler of the realm of dreams. He is also one of a group of siblings known as The Endless who likewise rule over different aspects of life, including Destruction, Death, Delirium, Despair, Destiny, and Desire. Assuming Season 2 of "The Sandman" faithfully adapts the comics, then a big part of the final chapter will revolve around Dream trying to free a former mortal lover from the confines of Hell, somewhere he wrongly placed her. According to a synopsis, "To make amends, Dream must confront longtime friends and foes, gods, monsters, and mortals. But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything." Fans of "The Sandman" were no doubt hoping for more than two seasons of the series. Unfortunately, the sexual misconduct allegations swirling around "The Sandman" creator Neil Gaiman convinced Netflix to bring the series to an early conclusion. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the final season of "The Sandman" will adapt pieces of different graphic novels including "Season of Mists", "Brief Lives", "The Kindly Ones", "The Sandman: Overture". It will also adapt a wealth of single issue stories. Along with Sturridge and Howell-Baptiste, Season 2 of the series will star Mason Alexander Park, Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Patton Oswalt, Jenna Coleman, Donna Preston, Esmé Creed-Miles, Adrian Lester, Barry Sloane, Ferdinand Kingsley, Stephen Fry, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Razane Jammal, Ruairi O'Connor, Freddie Fox, Clive Russell, Laurence O'Fuarain, Ann Skelly, Douglas Booth, Jack Gleeson, Indya Moore, and Steve Coogan. James Gunn Says He's Struggling With DCU's Batman, Comments On MCU Getting ‘Killed'

Superman There is perhaps no industry figure more visible at the moment (besides actors themselves) than James Gunn, the new head of the DCU. Gunn's shooting down rumors on social media, appearing in promos for his Superman movie, and doing wide-reaching interviews, like recent ones in Variety and Rolling Stone. Gunn is extremely candid about his initial time in the DCU here and his plans going forward. In the piece, he outright says he killed an entire DCU project because the screenplay wasn't good, and he discusses how he's struggling to figure out what to do with the DCU's Batman. The quote: "Batman has to have a reason for existing, right? So Batman can't just be 'Oh, we're making a Batman movie because Batman's the biggest character in all of Warner Bros.,' which he is. But because there's a need for him in the DCU and a need that he's not exactly the same as Matt [Reeves'] 'But yet he's not a campy Batman. I'm not interested in that. I'm not interested in a funny, campy Batman, really. So we're dealing with that," he told Rolling Stone. "Every single Batman story has been told. It seems like half the comics that have come out of DC over the past 30 years have Batman in them. He's the most famous superhero in the world and the most popular superhero in the world. And people love him because he's interesting, but also having so much of him out there can also make him boring. So how do you create that property that's fun to watch?" The Batman Gunn has seemingly ruled out Reeves' Robert Pattinson Batman as being the DCU Batman multiple times, but he also occasionally leaves the door open saying 'Never say never.' He recently gave an update on The Batman 2, saying it's not canceled, but he doesn't have a script and Reeves is 'slow,' though clearly he's not trying to be derogatory; it just is what it is, and it will arrive when it arrives. 'Let him do his thing, man,' Gunn said. In addition to being frank about his Batman block, he commented on his old home, Marvel. He enjoys being free of a mandate from WB to make a certain amount of movies in a tight time period, unlike Disney and the MCU: 'That wasn't fair. It wasn't right. And it killed them,' Gunn said of Marvel. 'We don't have the mandate [at DC] to have a certain amount of movies and TV shows every year. So we're going to put out everything that we think is of the highest quality. We're obviously going to do some good things and some not-so-good things, but hopefully on average everything will be as high-quality as possible. Nothing goes before there's a screenplay that I personally am happy with.' The Marvels Whether the MCU is 'killed' is up for debate. It certainly has had a number of failed features in the post-Endgame era, but also huge hits like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool and Wolverine. Now, it's crunch time with releases like this summer's Fantastic Four and two more Avengers movies with odd concepts like Robert Downey Jr. appearing as Doctor Doom. It's not like Gunn has nothing to prove, however. He has what appears to be something like a ten-year plan for DC, but we've seen nothing official from the DCU short of a season of Creature Commandos. Superman has to make a good first impression. My gut says it will, but we'll see how Batman goes when the time comes around for yet another iteration of that character. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.
