Carlos Cuesta appointed Parma head coach after Arsenal exit
Carlos Cuesta is Parma's new head coach after leaving his position after leaving Arsenal's coaching staff.
The Athletic reported on Tuesday that the 29-year-old was expected to leave for the Serie A side after being in talks with them for several weeks.
Cuesta replaces Cristian Chivu in the role after the 44-year-old Romanian succeeded Simone Inzaghi at Inter earlier this month.

Cuesta thanked Arsenal and Mikel Arteta in two separate statements on his Instagram on Wednesday.
'After five beautiful years it's hard to put this into words, but I can only express how grateful I am for having lived my day-to-day with such special people and feel what it means to represent this football club, with its incredible history and values,' Cuesta said in the first statement. 'The only thing I've ever tried to do was give everything I had inside of me every single day.'

In August 2020 he joined Arsenal as Arteta's assistant from Juventus' under-17 side where he occupied the same role, after a stint at Atletico Madrid.
'And then, to the person that made it happen. Thank you,' Cuesta said in a second message directed to Arteta. 'That's the only thing I can say. Thank you for your trust, for giving me the opportunity to be next to you and for showing me with constant facts which is the meaning of the word 'courage'.'

Cuesta never played professionally but helped lead Arsenal to two Community Shield wins in 2020 and 2023 after his appointment at the age of 25.
Granit Xhaka told The Athletic in 2024: 'He knows what he's doing: he knows how to speak with the players, what the players need.
'How Carlos improved — day by day, month by month, year on year — was unbelievable. The individual meetings that we had with him were always on point, very clear to understand, and I was very grateful to learn many many new things.'
Arsenal have a new sporting director in Andrea Berta and are prepared for a big transfer window after their fifth year with no major trophies under Arteta.

‘Thank you for being an incredible coach'
Arsenal assistant coach Carlos Cuesta has taken to social media to say his goodbyes ahead of taking over the vacant managerial role at Parma. The 29-year-old is set to become the youngest manager in the Italian top flight this century, and second-youngest in history, when he completes his move to the Italian side, who finished in 16th in Serie A last season. Advertisement Cuesta will be replacing Chrstian Chivu, who guided the Yellow and Blues to survival before taking over at Inter following the departure of Simone Inzaghi. In a post on his Instagram, Cuesta spoke of his gratitude of working at the Gunners since being brought to the club by Mikel Arteta in 2020 after stints at Atletico Madrid and Juventus. 'After five beautiful years it's hard to put this into words, but I can only express how grateful I am for having lived my day-to-day with such special people and feel what it means to represent this football club, with its incredible history and values,' Cuesta said. 'The only thing I've ever tried to do was give everything I had inside of me every single day. I was inspired by the culture that was created, by the hunger of every person of the organisation and by the unity that we had in any situation that we had to face. 'It has been a privilege to have had the chance to work with the players, staff, directors and all the employees of the club and at the same time, to receive an extra push from our amazing fans in every match.' Advertisement Cuesta followed this up with a second post thanking Arteta for his 'trust' during their five years together in north London. 'And then, to the person that made it happen. Thank you. That's the only thing I can say,' he added. 'Thank you for your trust, for giving me the opportunity to be next to you and for showing me with constant facts which is the meaning of the word 'courage'. 'But more than that, thank you for being an incredible coach, an incredible leader, and an even better human being. 'It has been a true privilege to learn from you, to feel your support in any circumstance and to share the ups and downs of the journey always seeing the positive side of it. You've taught me a lot, and I will carry it always with me. 'From the bottom of my heart, thank you.'

Jorginho gunning for old side Chelsea with Flamengo at Club World Cup
Jorginho made his Flamengo debut in the Brazilian club's 2-0 win over Esperance in their opening match at the Club World Cup (FRANCK FIFE) Brazilian giants Flamengo will be hoping the experience of Jorginho can help them get the better of his old side Chelsea when the teams clash in the Club World Cup on Friday. The 33-year-old Italy midfielder returned to the country of his birth earlier this month when he joined Rio de Janeiro powerhouses Flamengo on a three-year contract. Advertisement That ended a long career in Europe, which began in Italy -- the land of his paternal great-grandfather -- 15 years ago and saw him star in Serie A for Hellas Verona and Napoli before a move to Chelsea in 2018. He made more than 200 appearances for the Stamford Bridge side, helping them win the Europa League in 2019 and Champions League in 2021. "It is nice to come up against a former team, and see old friends," Jorginho told reporters this week in Philadelphia, where Chelsea and Flamengo will meet at FIFA's new tournament. The two clubs are jostling for supremacy in Group D after both won their opening matches on Monday, with Flamengo defeating Esperance while Chelsea overcame Los Angeles FC. Advertisement "I am ready to help in any way I can, on or off the field. It will be a really difficult game. We know how good a team they are and we will have to be prepared for it." Jorginho, who spent the last two and a half years at Arsenal, has joined a Flamengo side who are top of the Brazilian league and through to the knockout phase of the Copa Libertadores, a competition they last won in 2022. He will have to wait until next month to run out for his new team at the legendary Maracana in Rio, but his debut for Flamengo came in their 2-0 victory over Tunisian side Esperance in their opening Club World Cup game at Lincoln Financial Field on Monday. - Big ambitions - Advertisement "I have not yet had the chance to play at the Maracana and I can't wait for that but I think it was a good debut for the whole team. The fans were right behind us as always. It has been easy for me to adapt and settle in," he said. Jorginho is working under another former Chelsea player in Filipe Luis, the 39-year-old who took over as coach late last year. Flamengo have real ambitions of making a big impact at the Club World Cup, with their experienced squad also featuring the likes of Danilo and Alex Sandro, two Brazilian international defenders who returned home after spells in Europe. Midfielder Gerson, striker Pedro, Chile's Erick Pulgar and Uruguay's Giorgian de Arrascaeta are others who add knowledge of top-level international football in South America. Advertisement Flamengo are hoping to extend the impressive unbeaten record so far at the tournament for the six South American representatives -- four from Brazil and two from Argentina. "It is an important competition and those of us who are playing in it are privileged," said Jorginho, who has appeared over 50 times for Italy but grew up in Imbituba, a port town in southern Brazil. He believes his new team can go far at the competition, with Friday's game being followed by a meeting with Los Angeles FC in Orlando next Tuesday. Bayern Munich, Benfica and Boca Juniors are possible opponents in the last 16 if they make it through to the knockout phase. Advertisement "I believe we have a chance of winning if we keep faith in our squad and in the work we are doing. Brazilian teams don't usually get to play against European teams and everyone is eager to see Flamengo compete." as/ea
