Last season, Cuesta was heavily linked with Norwich and attracted interest from several Championship clubs and beyond. Now, he joins a struggling Parma side in need of a fresh start. Parma returned to Serie A and were languishing in 18th place when Chivu was appointed in February, following seven years coaching Inter Milan's youth teams. Chivu departed after the season to take over at Inter, where he also played for six seasons. Cuesta was reportedly preferred over Italian candidates Daniele De Rossi, Alberto Gilardino, and Paolo Vanoli. Although the Serie A season does not start until 23 August, Cuesta is the ninth new coach appointed this summer. Two of the 20 clubs still have unfilled vacancies. Cuesta arrives from Arsenal, where he had worked as an assistant to Mikel Arteta since 2000. Before that he spent two years in Italy as a youth coach at Juventus. Cuesta, a native of Mallorca who turns 30 in July, becomes the youngest current coach in any of the 'Big Five' European leagues. Parma returned to Serie A and were struggling in 18th place when Chivu was appointed in February, after seven years coaching Inter Milan youth teams. In 13 matches in his first senior head coaching job, the Romanian won three, lost three and drew even to guide the club to 16th and Serie A survival. Chivu left after the season to take over at Inter, where he also spent six seasons as a player. Cuesta was reportedly preferred to Italians Daniele De Rossi, Alberto Gilardino, and Paolo Vanoli. Arsenal assistant coach Carlos Cuesta has taken to social media to say his goodbyes ahead of taking over the vacant managerial role at Parma. The 29-year-old is set to become the youngest manager in the Italian top flight this century, and second-youngest in history, when he completes his move to the Italian side, who finished in 16th in Serie A last season. Advertisement Cuesta will be replacing Chrstian Chivu, who guided the Yellow and Blues to survival before taking over at Inter following the departure of Simone Inzaghi. In a post on his Instagram, Cuesta spoke of his gratitude of working at the Gunners since being brought to the club by Mikel Arteta in 2020 after stints at Atletico Madrid and Juventus. 'After five beautiful years it's hard to put this into words, but I can only express how grateful I am for having lived my day-to-day with such special people and feel what it means to represent this football club, with its incredible history and values,' Cuesta said. 'The only thing I've ever tried to do was give everything I had inside of me every single day. I was inspired by the culture that was created, by the hunger of every person of the organisation and by the unity that we had in any situation that we had to face. 'It has been a privilege to have had the chance to work with the players, staff, directors and all the employees of the club and at the same time, to receive an extra push from our amazing fans in every match.' Advertisement Cuesta followed this up with a second post thanking Arteta for his 'trust' during their five years together in north London. 'And then, to the person that made it happen. Thank you. That's the only thing I can say,' he added.
