Parma appoint Arsenal's Cuesta as youngest coach in Serie A history
ROME, June 20 — Parma made 29-year-old Carlos Cuesta the youngest head coach in the history of Serie A yesterday when they hired the Spaniard to replace Cristian Chivu. 'Parma Calcio are delighted to announce that, as of 1 July, Carlos Cuesta will become manager of the Men's First Team,' the club announced on their website adding that the coach had signed a two-year contract. Cuesta arrives from Arsenal, where he had worked as an assistant to Mikel Arteta since 2000. Before that he spent two years in Italy as a youth coach at Juventus. Cuesta, a native of Mallorca who turns 30 in July, becomes the youngest current coach in any of the 'Big Five' European leagues. Parma returned to Serie A and were struggling in 18th place when Chivu was appointed in February, after seven years coaching Inter Milan youth teams. In 13 matches in his first senior head coaching job, the Romanian won three, lost three and drew even to guide the club to 16th and Serie A survival. Chivu left after the season to take over at Inter, where he also spent six seasons as a player. Cuesta was reportedly preferred to Italians Daniele De Rossi, Alberto Gilardino, and Paolo Vanoli. The Serie A season does not start until August 23, but Cuesta is the ninth new coach appointed this summer. Two more of the 20 clubs have unfilled vacancies. — AFP

Arsenal mull a move for ANOTHER Premier League rival's star - but could face competition from Chelsea and Tottenham
Arsenal are believed to have discussed Mohammed Kudus at West Ham as a potential transfer target, as have Chelsea and Tottenham. The Gunners are keen to bolster their attacking ranks during the summer transfer window, with a number of strikers and forwards linked with the north London side. Alexander Isak, who features for the club's Premier League rivals Newcastle, was thought to be one of Arsenal's long-range targets, but appears set to stay on Tyneside. The club has also been linked to Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokores, with the Swedish goalscoring behemoth believed to be interested in a move to the Premier League, but frustrated by his current side's unwillingness to let him depart for anything less than his £84million release clause. Other names linked to the club include RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, and Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins. But Mikel Arteta 's side could yet look closer to home for additional firepower, with the forward the focus of interest from a range of Premier League rivals. The Ghana international was a bright spot amid a difficult season at the London Stadium, registering five goals and a further four assists across his 35 appearances in all competitions. But the star comes with a hefty release clause should any side look to secure his services. Amid links to Saudi Arabian sides at the start of the summer, it was revealed that clubs might have to fork out £85m. Arsenal are also thought to be interested in Chelsea star Noni Madueke, with Mail Sport reporting that the winger could be likely to fall down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge as the club continues to recruit heavily. Former Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap kicked off the Blues' summer spending with his £30m deal ahead of the Club World Cup, with Enzo Maresco also drafting in Mamadou Sarr from sister club Strasbourg, and Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon.

Mesut Ozil clarifies role in surprise transfer as Arsenal missed out on deal
Arsenal were previously interested in a deal for former Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane, only for him to seal a shock move to Turkish giants Galatasaray - and now Mesut Ozil has now spoken out on the switch Mesut Ozil insists he did not have a role to play in Leroy Sane rejecting Arsenal in favour of Galatasaray. The Gunners were thought to be interested in a move for former Bayern Munich star Sane earlier this summer. He was out of contract with the German giants at the end of this month. But he surprisingly chose to pursue an exit, having penned a lucrative deal with Turkish giants Galatasaray. Reports have suggested that former Arsenal star Ozil was pivotal to the move having convinced him to move to Istanbul, a claim that he denies. Speaking to local Turkish media outlets, Ozil said: 'Big names are coming to Turkey. They are playing football here. 'Hopefully, our big clubs will also be successful in Europe. I am very happy that Sane has come to Turkey. He is someone who, like me, has come from the Schalke youth academy.' When asked about the claims he had a role to play in Sane's decision, Ozil confirmed the pair did talk - but not specifically about Galatasaray. He added: 'We talked before I came to Turkey, but it's not like I directed him to Galatasaray as written in the media... 'He asked about life in Turkey and Istanbul, we talked about these things. I said it was a very beautiful city and a safe city. I said we have incredible food. I said we would be very happy if you came, and he came. We wish him success, too." Sane, 29, has already spoken out on his surprise switch to Turkey. Before agreeing terms with Galatasaray, it looked as though he would commit his future to Bayern only to u-turn. Explaining why he made that call, he said: "The decision wasn't easy for me. My time here wasn't always easy, but there were also many highlights. I felt at home here, I enjoyed last season a lot, and I've been able to make many friends within the team over the years." He added: "Even if the media portrayed it that way, there was never a 100 percent agreement. Unfortunately, in my opinion, that put unnecessary pressure on all parties involved. But it is what it is now – I'm not angry with anyone." Sane is expected to earn a huge wage during his time in Turkey having reportedly put pen to paper on a three-year deal worth over £10m per season. Bayern Munich confirmed after his move was announced that Sane would still be in action for them at the Club World Cup until his contract expired on June 30. ‘Thank you for being an incredible coach'
Arsenal assistant coach Carlos Cuesta has taken to social media to say his goodbyes ahead of taking over the vacant managerial role at Parma. The 29-year-old is set to become the youngest manager in the Italian top flight this century, and second-youngest in history, when he completes his move to the Italian side, who finished in 16th in Serie A last season. Advertisement Cuesta will be replacing Chrstian Chivu, who guided the Yellow and Blues to survival before taking over at Inter following the departure of Simone Inzaghi. In a post on his Instagram, Cuesta spoke of his gratitude of working at the Gunners since being brought to the club by Mikel Arteta in 2020 after stints at Atletico Madrid and Juventus. 'After five beautiful years it's hard to put this into words, but I can only express how grateful I am for having lived my day-to-day with such special people and feel what it means to represent this football club, with its incredible history and values,' Cuesta said. 'The only thing I've ever tried to do was give everything I had inside of me every single day. I was inspired by the culture that was created, by the hunger of every person of the organisation and by the unity that we had in any situation that we had to face. 'It has been a privilege to have had the chance to work with the players, staff, directors and all the employees of the club and at the same time, to receive an extra push from our amazing fans in every match.' Advertisement Cuesta followed this up with a second post thanking Arteta for his 'trust' during their five years together in north London. 'And then, to the person that made it happen. Thank you. That's the only thing I can say,' he added. 'Thank you for your trust, for giving me the opportunity to be next to you and for showing me with constant facts which is the meaning of the word 'courage'. 'But more than that, thank you for being an incredible coach, an incredible leader, and an even better human being. 'It has been a true privilege to learn from you, to feel your support in any circumstance and to share the ups and downs of the journey always seeing the positive side of it. You've taught me a lot, and I will carry it always with me. 'From the bottom of my heart, thank you.'
