Galaxy Z Fold 7 reveal date now looks like a lock — here's when we'll see Samsung's newest foldables
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 are coming, that much we know, but what hasn't been clear so far is when they would actually arrive. Samsung's Summer Unpacked event often moves around on the calendar. But Evan Blass might have some insight.
According to the leaker, Galaxy Unpacked will be taking place on Wednesday, July 9 — which is just shy of three weeks out. Blass claims that the event will start at 10 a.m. Eastern but doesn't offer any additional information beyond that.
That date makes perfect sense, considering last year's Unpacked was on July 10. It was a little earlier than normal, reportedly because Samsung was a major sponsor of the Paris Olympics and wanted to get the new phones unveiled before the games.
Samsung clearly likes that launch window if it's sticking with it for another year. Though it does make sense to get out early, and ahead of both the iPhone 17 and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold — which are expected in September and August, respectively.
The big appearances at Summer Unpacked are going to be the new wave of Samsung foldables. Notably the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the all-new Galaxy Z Fold 7 Ultra.
The Ultra is still something of a mystery, since various rumors already paint the regular 7 Fold as having rather powerful specs, but Samsung has confirmed that it's on the way.
The phone is also said to have a heavy AI focus, but that's not really surprising given how much Samsung has invested in Galaxy AI. There's also rumors of a Galaxy Z Flip FE coming later this year, though it's been claimed that this won't arrive until long after Unpacked.

However, we should hear more about the Galaxy Watch 8, the upcoming One UI 8 update and the Project Moohan headset at the event. The latter of which is long overdue for some limelight, considering it's supposed to be going on sale before the end of the year.

Why Apple Must Buy Perplexity
Tim Cook ought to call Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas and offer him $30 billion for his AI search engine. And he should do it right away. Apple buying Perplexity is such an obviously good deal for both companies that I feel silly even writing it down. Apple would get a bonafide AI service it could plug right into Safari and Siri that would revamp its disappointing AI offering. Perplexity would get access to the 2 billion+ Apple devices in circulation and become an AI force on par with ChatGPT. 'Not likely!' Perplexity chief business officer Dmitry Shevelenko told me of a potential tie-up with Apple. 'But Meta-Scale is so unlikely that I feel we aren't living in a world of likelies.' Apple and Perplexity have had no M&A discussions to date, Shevelenko added, not even a wink. But that should change. As an AI search engine, Perplexity could slot in neatly across Apple's product portfolio. It could integrate into Siri with a seamlessness that only comes via ownership. Apple values control of its product experience, and having its designers work alongside Perplexity's engineers could help it shape exactly how its AI answers show up in the assistant. Perplexity also has an AI voice mode that could surprise and delight users, and perhaps supplant Siri one day. And many Apple customers who haven't used AI yet could experience its power for the first time through Perplexity's search, image generator, and Deep Research. There's urgency to get a deal done right away. Apple's search partner, Google, is at risk of losing its ability to pay Apple for the default search position on Safari, a deal worth billions of dollars per year. If Apple acts now, it could start integrating Perplexity into its products and figure out how to make money from the service before it's too late. Waiting and scrambling only if the ruling goes through could lead to years of setbacks. And Perplexity's price will likely go up if a court ruling prevents Google from paying Apple. Perplexity is also wrapping up a $500 fundraising round at a very manageable $14 billion valuation. If Apple doubled that amount in a purchase offer, Perplexity would have to take it. And Apple has the money. The company did a $110 billion share buyback last year and announced a $100 billion buyback this year. Apple's slow AI start is a strategic crisis. There will never be a better time to use its cash. Spending $30 billion on a legitimate AI player is vastly better than standing still. The market would likely celebrate it, even if it means a smaller buyback. Growth stocks get growth multiples. Adding to the import of getting this done now, Perplexity has a deepening partnership with Samsung that could be hard to dissolve with time. Currently, the companies are offering Perplexity Pro for free to all Samsung users. But they're in talks for a deeper partnership that would include preloading Perplexity onto Samsung devices and integrating it into Samsung's browser. Apple swooping in and taking Perplexity off the table would be ruthless, but also a sign it knows the stakes of this AI moment and isn't messing around. The acquisition might get the attention of antitrust regulators, but consider this: Apple has practically no share in the search market since it's effectively outsourced it Google. And Perplexity is still tiny compared to the incumbents. It would be exceptionally difficult to argue the deal helps illegally maintain a search monopoly. It would likely sail through approvals. Even at its small size, Perplexity is showing good momentum. Srinivas recently said the company is seeing 20% month-over-month growth in search queries and handled 780 million queries in May. That's minuscule compared to Google's 5 trillion searches per year, but there's plenty of room to grow. And Perplexity's AI search product is largely beloved by its users. This would be the biggest acquisition in Apple's history (by far), potentially 10X its $3 billion Beats purchase. But the fit, urgency, and potential make the move necessary at a time when Apple needs to do something bold in AI, especially as its in-house team struggles to ship. US prepares action targeting allies' chip plants in China, WSJ reports
(Reuters) -A U.S. official has informed leading global semiconductor companies of plans to cancel waivers allowing them to use American technology in China, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. Jeffrey Kessler, under secretary of commerce for industry and security at the Commerce Department, told Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing this week that he wanted to cancel those waivers, WSJ reported. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. A Commerce spokesperson said in a statement, 'Chipmakers will still be able to operate in China. The new enforcement mechanisms on chips mirror licensing requirements that apply to other semiconductor companies that export to China and ensure the United States has an equal and reciprocal process.' What to expect at the next Samsung Galaxy Unpacked
The next Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event could be announced any day now. The summertime event usually happens in July or August. No date has been officially set, but at least one rumor suggests that it will all go down on July 9 at 10AM ET, and New York City is being floated as the likely location. Whenever it happens, we expect that the next Unpacked will center on the latest developments to Samsung's lines of foldables and wearables. A lot of it may be business as usual, but the company has hinted that some possibly exciting new additions are in the works. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (Sam Rutherford for Engadget) Based on the usual annual cadence, this summer Unpacked 2025 will most likely introduce the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7. One recent leak claimed that Gemini Live will be a core part of the foldables' presentation, and considering AI is the buzzword for every tech presentation these days, it would be strange if Unpacked didn't follow suit. AI features got a positive reception from both our Fold 6 and Flip 6 reviewers, although they fell more under the umbrella of parlor tricks than valuable assets. Android Headlines is back with renders of what it claims show the design of the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The foldable sports a slimmer profile than the prior model and the navy blue chassis is certainly pretty. It also indicates that both the cover display and inner display are reportedly bigger in this design, up to 6.5 inches and 8.2 inches, respectively. The publication also showed purported images of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 that also pointed to increased screen real estate. There may be a third player in the foldables lineup for this Unpacked. A teaser from Samsung last month pointed toward a Galaxy Z Fold Ultra that will come with Galaxy AI. There are no specs in the blog post, but the company insists that this will have "industry-leading hardware, cutting-edge performance and seamless AI integration optimized for the foldable format." This doesn't appear to be the tri-fold design we've heard rumblings about, but that would be a fun reveal if Samsung does pull that off as a surprise announcement. Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 (Amy Skorheim for Engadget) On the wearables front, the only thing we're really anticipating is news about the Galaxy Watch 8. But the anticipation is pretty mild. This smartwatch collection from Samsung hasn't really pushed the envelope for several years; the Galaxy Watch 7 was the third iteration where our reviewers felt the new model offered only incremental improvements over the previous generation. So either this Unpacked will be yet another round of small gains on the specs or Samsung will surprise us with some substantial upgrades. Improved battery life would be a big plus. For the past few weeks, Samsung fans have been speculating that a new smartphone announcement could be on the way soon. Although the company's standard mobile hardware is usually unveiled at the start of the year, we've seen some credible rumors that a new Galaxy S25 FE is in the works. If Samsung is looking to release a new version to that line in the fall, it would make sense to announce and open pre-orders at the summer Unpacked. The Galaxy S24 FE had some solid specs but was a little pricey to be a true budget model, especially with an underwhelming set of AI features. So far, the leaks about the S25 FE also point toward continued underwhelm, with claims that its cameras won't be seeing much in the way of upgrades, although it may be getting a boost to performance and battery if rumors that it will use the Exynos 2400 processor turn out to be true.
