What to expect at the next Samsung Galaxy Unpacked
The next Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event could be announced any day now. The summertime event usually happens in July or August. No date has been officially set, but at least one rumor suggests that it will all go down on July 9 at 10AM ET, and New York City is being floated as the likely location.
Whenever it happens, we expect that the next Unpacked will center on the latest developments to Samsung's lines of foldables and wearables. A lot of it may be business as usual, but the company has hinted that some possibly exciting new additions are in the works. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (Sam Rutherford for Engadget)
Based on the usual annual cadence, this summer Unpacked 2025 will most likely introduce the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7. One recent leak claimed that Gemini Live will be a core part of the foldables' presentation, and considering AI is the buzzword for every tech presentation these days, it would be strange if Unpacked didn't follow suit. AI features got a positive reception from both our Fold 6 and Flip 6 reviewers, although they fell more under the umbrella of parlor tricks than valuable assets.
Android Headlines is back with renders of what it claims show the design of the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The foldable sports a slimmer profile than the prior model and the navy blue chassis is certainly pretty. It also indicates that both the cover display and inner display are reportedly bigger in this design, up to 6.5 inches and 8.2 inches, respectively. The publication also showed purported images of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 that also pointed to increased screen real estate.
There may be a third player in the foldables lineup for this Unpacked. A teaser from Samsung last month pointed toward a Galaxy Z Fold Ultra that will come with Galaxy AI. There are no specs in the blog post, but the company insists that this will have "industry-leading hardware, cutting-edge performance and seamless AI integration optimized for the foldable format." This doesn't appear to be the tri-fold design we've heard rumblings about, but that would be a fun reveal if Samsung does pull that off as a surprise announcement. On the wearables front, the only thing we're really anticipating is news about the Galaxy Watch 8. But the anticipation is pretty mild.
This smartwatch collection from Samsung hasn't really pushed the envelope for several years; the Galaxy Watch 7 was the third iteration where our reviewers felt the new model offered only incremental improvements over the previous generation. So either this Unpacked will be yet another round of small gains on the specs or Samsung will surprise us with some substantial upgrades. Improved battery life would be a big plus.
For the past few weeks, Samsung fans have been speculating that a new smartphone announcement could be on the way soon. Although the company's standard mobile hardware is usually unveiled at the start of the year, we've seen some credible rumors that a new Galaxy S25 FE is in the works. If Samsung is looking to release a new version to that line in the fall, it would make sense to announce and open pre-orders at the summer Unpacked.
The Galaxy S24 FE had some solid specs but was a little pricey to be a true budget model, especially with an underwhelming set of AI features. So far, the leaks about the S25 FE also point toward continued underwhelm, with claims that its cameras won't be seeing much in the way of upgrades, although it may be getting a boost to performance and battery if rumors that it will use the Exynos 2400 processor turn out to be true.

That's it, you should now have a full year of the Pro tier of Perplexity AI. If you have used Gemini, ChatGPT, Copilot—or any other chatbot—you will be familiar with Perplexity. It claims to focus on accuracy by always providing citations for its answers. The Pro version gives users more options for tailoring their output results from AI models, including GPT-4 Omni, Claude 3, and Google's Gemini. Other Pro features allow text-to-image generation, file uploads, and an increased amount of daily searches, which uses more sources for more detailed answers. This is one of Samsung's more generous software giveaways this year. The last year-long subscription Samsung gifted to Galaxy users was for Disney Plus via its now-defunct 'Boost' program. Two years on, a similar, more 2025-inspired, freebie has been made exclusively to U.S. Galaxy phone owners. None of the current lineup of bundled subscription services, that come with Galaxy S25 purchases, extend beyond one month—the only exception being six months of Gemini Advanced. It isn't worth buying a Samsung phone for any of those software freebies (it is, however, for the free tablet and trade-in deals). But the good thing about the Perplexity offer is that it doesn't require the purchase of a new phone. Have a look around for an old Samsung phone and see if you can still claim the subscription. The fact that Samsung has launched some of its most aggressive trade-in pricing I have seen, for the Edge, hints that may be the case. It also shows what lengths the Korean company will go to to shift smartphones—so there may be more deals on the way for the Edge and other Galaxy phones. The Nintendo Switch 2 has been all the rage around the Engadget HQ for the last few weeks. Even the editors who didn't write the official review have had their hands glued to their new toys. Of course, we've been testing other things too, mainly a repairable laptop that's design for student use. Read on to catch up on the reviews you might've missed over the last two weeks. With the Switch 2, Nintendo improved everything we liked about the original while retaining its sleek and portable design. $449 at Walmart Nintendo Switch 2 finally made its way to gamers this month and several of us have been putting the portable console through its paces. Senior reviews reporter Sam Rutherford wrote our full review, noting that the company managed to take everything that make the original model so good and make it better. However, there's still room for improvement, especially with regards to battery life. "The Switch 2 has everything that made the original so great, but now there's more of it to enjoy," he said. "Granted, Nintendo's latest console commands a higher price, but as the successor to the iconic system that revived handheld gaming, this thing is worth it." The Switch 2 Pro controller is clearly the most refined gamepad Nintendo has ever made. It's just a shame that it's so expensive and doesn't have Hall effect sticks. $85 at Best Buy A new Switch means a new Pro Controller, so senior reviews reporter Devindra Hardawar took a deep dive on Nintendo's new accessory. Here's how I extend my Samsung Galaxy's battery life
Saeed Wazir / Android Authority I spend hours on my Samsung phone daily testing apps, browsing the internet, and working on productivity software. Many of these are resource-hungry or silently drain my battery while running in the background. That's why I optimize my battery settings to prevent my phone from running out of power when I need it the most. Samsung includes several handy tools to squeeze extra life out of my battery. They don't affect performance and can even help extend my phone's overall lifespan by prioritising my battery's health and optimizing charging. Each tool contributes to improving my battery life, and I see impressive results when I use them together. Degradation occurs at a faster rate when the battery is at 100% or below 20%. The battery protection feature helps reduce the degradation rate by managing the phone's charging cycles and keeping it within a specific range to prolong its life. There's a noticeable performance difference after around two years of use, and I switch to Maximum to avoid costly battery replacements. The Adaptive setting is excellent for people who charge their phones overnight, but I don't use it because it doesn't accurately track my sleeping patterns. Power-saving mode for when I'm on the go Saeed Wazir / Android Authority Power-saving is a simple setting that helps me get more hours out of my battery after a charge. I think it's great for extending my battery life when I'm out and about because it provides an estimate of how much longer the battery will last when activated. For example, my phone will have around 20.5 hours of battery life when it's at 92% power, but the power-saving feature can extend it to 26 hours using the maximum settings. It achieves this by turning off the Always-On Display, limiting the CPU speed to 70%, decreasing the brightness by 10%, and limiting other app performance. I appreciate that each of these settings has its own toggle, so I can choose which ones to activate. Power-saving is great for getting more hours of use, but I use it sparingly because it affects my phone's performance. I only activate it when I'm travelling or don't have access to a charger, and leave it off the rest of the time. I stop unused apps from running in the background Saeed Wazir / Android Authority I'm guilty of installing apps that I use once and forget about. Then they lurk in the background, reducing my battery life and performance. When I eventually get around to checking my installed apps, I usually find hundreds, most of which I don't need. I uninstall the apps I have no intention of using again and disable the ones I might revisit later. Checking the App info page provides valuable information to help with my decision. The page shows how much storage, mobile data, and battery each app uses, and I disable the ones that I don't use, which are exploiting my resources. I can always enable the apps again if I decide I want to use them days or weeks later. Adaptive battery manages my apps based on my usage Saeed Wazir / Android Authority Adaptive battery is a feature that manages my Samsung phone's app performance based on my usage habits. This means that the phone learns which apps I use the most, how long I use them for, and the amount of battery power they consume. Adaptive battery then puts seldom-used apps to sleep as soon as I exit them so they don't run in the background, and throttles other background apps. I've had mixed results with Adaptive Battery because some apps take just a second or two longer to respond when it's activated. I prevent this from happening by adding the apps I use most to the 'Never auto-sleeping apps' list, so they aren't affected by the adaptive settings. It constantly needs power, and managing how it works can drastically improve my phone's standby time. Luckily, Samsung provides various solutions to manage the Always-On Display and reduce its power consumption. I can turn the Always-On display on or off with a toggle and adjust its behavior with the When to Show options. I usually disable unused apps and the Always On Display on all my phones. I don't use Battery Protection on a new phone, and only activate it when I want to save the overall life after years of use. The performance of these tools varies depending on my usage, phone model, and battery age, and I feel some models experience greater benefits than others.
