The Andhra Pradesh State Cabinet has approved a proposal by the Home Department to grant special remission to 17 life-convicted prisoners eligible as of February 1, 2025.
Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy announced this at a press conference held at the Secretariat on Wednesday. The prisoners who have undergone an actual sentence of 14 years for offences punishable with death and seven years for offences punishable with life imprisonment are eligible for remission.
He said: 'The decision for rehabilitation of life convicts and their transformation to live in society provides a new direction to the correctional system. Released prisoners will have to appear before the probation officer and police station within their jurisdiction once every three months. If they commit any crime in the future, the remission will be cancelled'.
Land transfer for police academy
The Cabinet has also approved the proposal by the Revenue (Lands) Department to transfer 94.497 cents of government land in Pinnamareddypalli village and Nugondapalli village, Agiripalli Mandal, Eluru District, free of cost to the Home Department for the establishment of the Andhra Pradesh Police Academy, subject to obtaining NOC from local authorities. Additionally, the Cabinet also approved the proposal by the Home Department for promotion of 248 constables to head constables in the Andhra Pradesh Special Police Force (APSPF), with a corresponding reduction in the number of constables by 248.
Yoga Day
The minister said that the Cabinet approved the proposal by the Health, Medical, and Family Welfare Department to ratify short tenders called by APMSIDC, district-level committees, and other departments to establish a world record as part of International Yoga Day celebrations scheduled for June 21 under YOGANDHRA-2025. The main event will be held in Visakhapatnam under the theme 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health,' and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest. Mass yoga programs will be conducted statewide with the participation of approximately 2 crore people to surpass the Guinness World Record of 1.53 lakh people set in Surat in 2023. The main event will be held from RK Beach to Bheemili, and the Chief Minister has suggested expanding the program to accommodate up to 5 lakh participants along the coastline from Bheemili to Srikakulam, he added.

160 nationals evacuated in first batch under Operation Sindhu: Indian mission in Israel

With Israeli airspace closed and commercial flights suspended, the Indian missions in Israel and Jordan, in a joint effort, evacuated 160 Indian nationals in the first batch under Operation Sindhu on Sunday, according to an embassy source. The missions organised the first batch of evacuation from Israel as the Indian nationals living in Israel constantly grappled with the sounds of sirens, frequently taking cover in bunkers and fortified safe rooms from incoming missiles and drones from Iran. "A total of 160 Indians have reached the Jordanian border for evacuation in the first batch," the embassy source told PTI. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Eat Ginger Everyday for 1 Month This is What Happens Tips and Tricks Undo India launched Operation Sindhu last week to bring back Indians from Iran and Israel, given increasing hostilities between the two nations. Sensing the urgency of the situation, the Indian embassy in Tel Aviv last week set up a 24/7 control room to oversee all facets of the evacuation efforts, the source said. Live Events The control room directed Indian nationals to register via an online portal and compiled a detailed database of Indian citizens across Israel, it said. "Evacuation priorities were determined based on medical emergencies, the presence of young children, women, and students. Embassy officials proactively contacted registrants by phone and email to confirm travel details and allocate them to specific evacuation flights," the source said. The situation on the ground is being closely monitored at the highest levels of the government, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi actively receiving real-time updates on the safety and security of the Indian nationals, the source said. "This operation underscores India's unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad. Operation Sindhu is yet another testament to India's emergence as a credible 'first responder' in international crises," a statement from the Indian mission said. The Indian nationals scheduled to be evacuated in the first batch gathered at designated assembly points in Tel Aviv and Haifa early Sunday morning and were then taken by road to the Sheikh Hussein Bridge on the Israel-Jordan border , some 120 kilometres from here. After completing immigration and border formalities at the Israel-Jordanian border, the group proceeded to Amman Airport , another 120 kilometres ride. Arvind Shukla, a researcher from Hebrew University who was evacuated on Sunday morning, praised "the smooth and carefully planned process" by the embassy under "difficult circumstances", and told PTI: "I have completed the visa process and have already moved to the Jordanian side. The embassy was extremely helpful in facilitating our journey, and we were looked after well." The Israeli and Jordanian governments extended crucial support in ensuring the safe and orderly transit of Indian nationals across the border, the mission in Tel Aviv said. The Embassy of India in Jordan played a key role in receiving the evacuees at the border to further facilitate their onward journey to Amman Airport, it said. Special flights from Amman to New Delhi have been arranged by the Ministry of External Affairs to safely fly Indian nationals home. Some flights are also planned to leave from Egypt in the coming days, as there are many Indians living in the south of Israel. Operation Sindhu joins the ranks of previous high-profile evacuation missions such as Operation Ganga , Operation Devi Shakti, Operation Kaveri, and Operation Ajay, which successfully brought home Indians from Ukraine, Afghanistan, Sudan, and Israel, respectively. "These efforts reflect not only India's growing global stature but also its operational readiness and deep sense of responsibility toward its diaspora," an embassy official said. "The Government of India continues to accord the highest priority to the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad. The government will continue to monitor the situation closely. The embassy remains continuously in touch with the community to extend all feasible assistance," the official said. The Indian mission in Israel once again reached out to its citizens on Sunday to register for ongoing updates and assistance, and provided a 24/7 helpline number. There are over 40,000 Indian nationals in Israel working as caregivers, construction workers, students, professionals and others.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announces Shradhanjali scheme for Assam's migrant workers

In a significant policy push, the Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Sunday approved a series of key decisions aimed at social welfare, environmental conservation, administrative reform, and economic development. Addressing the media after the meeting, CM Sarma highlighted the cabinet's commitment to inclusive growth and dignified governance. One of the most notable decisions was the approval of the 'Shradhanjali' scheme, aimed at facilitating the dignified and coordinated repatriation of deceased residents of Assam from other states. Scheduled for implementation from October 1, 2025, the scheme will primarily support low-income workers and those who die in accidents or criminal incidents outside the state. Assam Police's Special Branch will act as the nodal agency, with a DIG-level officer overseeing its execution. A dedicated social media channel and helpline (112) will support timely communication by families of the deceased. In a move to empower the Rabha community, the Cabinet greenlit the creation of the Rabha Development Council for Rabha people living outside the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) area. The Council will be tasked with implementing welfare schemes focused on the socio-economic and cultural development of the community. The Cabinet also approved a landmark decision to classify the transgender community as Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC), aligning with Supreme Court directives. Applicants seeking Transgender Identity Cards must furnish proof of being original inhabitants of Assam, with District Commissioners designated to verify and issue the cards. Environmental conservation featured prominently, with two major wetlands in Goalpara district—Urpad Beel (1256 hectares) and Hasila Beel (245 hectares)—being designated as Proposed Reserve Forests (PRFs) under the Assam Forest Regulation, 1891. The public will be given a month to raise any objections or suggestions regarding Hasila Beel's notification. The Cabinet also focused on bolstering welfare measures, approving the enhancement of the honorarium for Cook-cum-Helpers under the PM POSHAN scheme from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 per month, taking their total monthly honorarium to Rs 2,000 from October this year. In education, newly appointed teachers under the Special Recruitment Drive will receive their first annual increment in July 2025—advancing the timeline by a full year. Furthering employment reforms, it was decided that 50 per cent of the Supervisor posts in the Women and Child Development Department will be reserved for experienced Anganwadi Workers, while the remainder will be filled through direct recruitment. In a boost to housing and transport support, the government extended its flagship 'Apon Ghar' and 'Apon Bahan' schemes to regular and eligible contractual employees in five key PSUs and societies, including the National Health Mission and Samagra Shiksha Axom. On the industrial front, the Cabinet approved the Assam State Mineral Exploration Trust Rules, 2025, to regulate and promote the sustainable exploration of minor minerals. In a major energy infrastructure development, Hinduja Renewables was allotted land in West Karbi Anglong for a 900 MW pumped storage project with an investment of Rs 5,400 crore—pivotal in advancing Assam's renewable energy goals. Additionally, the Cabinet approved the transfer of 40 bighas of government land for establishing a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Chandrapur, Kamrup (Metro), aimed at enhancing access to quality education. Finally, the state will establish a Rs 3,000 crore Assam Industrial and Green Growth Fund, anchored with Rs 500 crore, to support renewable energy, agro-tech, tourism, and start-ups, positioning Assam as a key player in sustainable and green economic growth.

Andhra Pradesh government spent ₹300 crore on International Yoga Day event for publicity, alleges YSRCP

YSR Congress Party leader Gudivada Amarnath alleged that the government has spent ₹300 crore on the International Yoga Day event purely for propaganda and publicity, putting students, public and women through severe inconvenience. He also alleged that tribal students were brought the previous day without proper care and they faced serious hardships. Addressing the media during a press conference at the party office on Sunday, he said, 'The event was conducted with the aim of entering the Guinness Book of Records, while Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Babu already holds a record for cheating people.' The YSRCP leader alleged that Mr. Naidu has been securing funds for Amaravati, while the North Andhra region is completely neglected and used merely for his publicity stunts. It was only during the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy's tenure that North Andhra saw real development, he stated. 'Yuvatha Poru' Mr. Amarnath also said that the YSRCP would organise protests in the name of 'Yuvatha Poru' on June 23 against the NDA government for failing to implement the promise of providing 20 lakh jobs and payment of unemployment stipend. The YSRCP will also submit representations at all the Collector offices as part of the protests, he said. He also alleged that the NDA government is resorting to diversion politics as it has failed to implement the poll promises, especially the creation of jobs and provision of ₹3,000 stipend to the unemployed, after it assumed office. He appealed to the people to make the 'Yuvatha Poru' protest a grand success.
