Sam Heughan drops major hint Outlander could return after season 8 finale

Daily Record13-06-2025

Outlander season eight might not be the last we see of Claire and Jamie Fraser's love story, if Sam Heughan's hints are to be believed...
Outlander fans are already mourning the loss of Claire and Jamie Fraser's captivating love story. The eighth and final season will soon hit screens, as the fanbase prepares to close the chapter on the era.
Although we have spin-off Blood of My Blood to look forward to, it's the original thats likely to stick in everyone's hearts. Diana Gabaldon's best-selling book franchise only grew after it was adapted by Starz for the small screen.

The series has catapulted the likes of Scottish actor Sam Heughan to fame for his portrayal as Highland warrior Jamie Fraser. The good news? There could be a silver lining on the horizon, despite the fact the show is set to end for good after the eighth run.

While promoting his new stage role in Macbeth, Sam spoke about the closing chapter in his TV career and if there was scope for a follow-up series or special, to which he made it clear he wouldn't rule it out.
"Who knows?" Heughan said when speaking to Deadline news. "I know they did that with Downton Abbey and others. So you never know. Maybe the ginger wig is still around somewhere."
The innocent remark has sent shockwaves through the fanbase. Although Starz has not confirmed any Outlander continuations beyond Blood of My Blood set to premiere later this year, it hasn't stopped many hoping.
Elsewhere, Sam is set to return to the stage for his theatre debut as Macbeth, at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). The actor was delighted to announce he will star in a leading role, admitting his dreams have come true.

He will feature alongside The Day Of The Jackal actress Lia Williams, starring as Lady Macbeth. Discussing his new role, Sam said: "At age 18, standing on the main stage of the Royal Lyceum Edinburgh, playing 'spear-carrier number 2' (essentially a glorified extra) in a production of Macbeth, I could only dream of one day playing the infamous title character."
He continued: "It feels full circle to be returning to the stage, after over a decade working primarily in television and film. Not only is Macbeth my favourite Shakespeare play: intense, immediate and unsettling, it also happens to be famously Scottish.
"The RSC has always been at the pinnacle of my ambition and I feel deeply honoured and thankful to be working alongside some enormously talented and creative people.
"The Other Place is the perfect space to create an intense, intimate production and, like Lady M, we will be calling upon the spirits of the RSC's highly acclaimed past productions for their blessing."

King Charles knew Queen had died after hearing two devastating words

It was a bittersweet moment for Charles as he stepped into the role he'd been waiting for his whole life for. The Royal Family has been through a few twists and turns but it was the end of a long stable chapter for the UK when Queen Elizabeth died in 2022. The monarch served an incredible 70 years on the throne, making her Britain's longest-reigning, and she was one of the most popular public figures across the globe. With the end of an era marked by the Queen's death, it also heralded a new beginning as King Charles stepped into the role he'd been waiting to do his whole life. At the age of 73, Charles became King, a bittersweet move as he was forced to navigate his new position whilst also grieving for his mum, as writes the Mirror. ‌ The Queen was at Balmoral and had been at the Scottish estate for the weeks leading up to her death at the age of 96. On the morning she passed, September 8, 2022, the then Prince Charles was called and told that it would not be long before his mother died. He was joined by his sister Anne, and the pair spent the final few hour's of the monarch's life taking turns to sit beside her, it's revealed in a new documentary. ‌ Channel 5's Birkhall: The King's Secret Sanctuary, sees experts discuss the moment Charles became the new King as they delve into the fact that he was 'summoned to Balmoral" from his own home on the Aberdeenshire estate, Birkhall, which is described as one of his favourite residences. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said in the documentary: 'He was told that it would probably be a few hours before she passed away." Royal expert and journalist Emily Andrews added: "Charles and Anne had been taking it in turns to sit with the Queen and then, I think, as she slipped into a coma, Charles needed a bit of fresh air and some nature. "So he went to the grounds of Birkhall, and it was there that he took the call." ‌ Viewers will discover that ahead of Charles being given the official news of the Queen's death, he already knew thanks to two words that were said to him upon answering the call. Jennie said: "He knew what had happened. "Because he was addressed by the person who rang him, the courtier, as 'Your Majesty' and then he knew, 'Well, my mother has died' and obviously he raced back to Balmoral to be at her side." ‌ It's also claimed in the documentary that members of the family felt relief after their huge loss because the Queen had been able to spend her last days at her beloved Balmoral, where she'd spent some of her happiest times. Emily Andrews added: "I think everybody in the Royal Family, actually, was really glad it happened in Scotland and for Charles as well to be at Birkhall, where it's such a kind of safe space for him, he feels very calm and relaxed, I think was very important'. ‌ After the news circulated within the wider family, Prince William, Edward and Andrew soon travelled to Balmoral, followed a short time later by Prince Harry. Harry has since revealed that he found out about his grandmother's death from a breaking news alert on his phone after his flight to Scotland was delayed. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The coffin was then flown to RAF Northolt and taken back to London to lie in state at Westminster Hall. Princess Anne accompanied her mother on every leg of the journey, calling it an 'honour and a privilege'. Birkhall: The King's Secret Sanctuary , airs Saturday 21 June at 7.30pm on Channel 5.

King Charles' sweet frozen-in-time tribute to loved one who died decades ago

When one of King Charles's loved ones passed away over two decades ago, he was left totally bereft, experts have revealed in a new documentary - and he was so heartbroken he has kept several tributes to them in one of his royal homes King Charles has a seriously sentimental side - and this heartbreaking tribute to a lost loved one proves just how deep it runs. More than 20 years ago, Charles lost someone who had been incredibly important to him, and experts have revealed that to this day, he has kept a few key aspects of their belongings in his home in exactly the same place - as if they might walk back in the door any moment now. ‌ The revelation came in the new Channel 5 documentary, Birkhall: The King's Secret Sanctuary, which details the monarch's relationship with one of his absolutely favourite residences. ‌ Birkhall is positioned very near the Royal Family's famous Balmoral estate, where they gather every summer and spend weeks engaged in countryside pursuits like fishing and picnics, in the privacy afforded to them by the Scottish countryside. The nearby Birkhall is a much more modest home compared to the grandeur of Balmoral, and since his childhood, it is said by the experts to have been one of Charles's favourite places to spend time - in part because of who it previously belonged to, his beloved grandmother, the Queen Mother. "For Charles, she was this haven of security and affection, and laughter and love," explained former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond. The expert continued that during Charles's unhappy school years in the north of Scotland, his grandmother's home of Birkhall, and the warm relationship they shared, offered the young prince some welcome respite. "When he was at Gordonstoun school in the north of Scotland, he would, whenever he could, take the two-hour journey to Birkhall to be with his beloved granny." When the Queen Mother died in 2002 at her home of Royal Lodge, Windsor - at the ripe old age of 101 - the Scottish retreat of Birkhall went to Charles, who was left utterly bereft at the loss. ‌ "For Charles, the loss of his grandmother was absolutely devastating," explained Jennie, but after taking over the property, he started undertaking essential refurbishments, updating the heating systems, and redecorating much of the place with the help of his now-wife Camilla. However, Charles made sure that the Queen Mother's presence is still felt in the house, "Her coats are still hanging up, on the is really sweet," revealed expert Afua Hagan. This heartbreaking nod to his grandmother in his favourite home is not the only way he has paid tribute to the Queen Mother, the expert also revealed that he has kept the barometer she used to use to check the weather hanging up. ‌ The Queen Mother was also a huge fan of clocks, the experts revealed, and used to have eight in the dining room alone - all set to "slightly different times" so they would chime out of sync with one another. The Queen Mother's guests were said to have been sent round the bend by this - but this reaction was something the quirky royal "thoroughly enjoyed". ‌ Charles has kept her clocks hanging up, it is revealed in the documentary, "He kept all eight of those grandfather clocks in the dining room," Afua explained, "but he set them all to the same time, so it didn't drive everybody as bonkers as it had done before." A royal author has previously claimed that the Queen Mother was actually "more of a mother" to her grandson than the late Queen Elizabeth herself - putting this down to the former monarch's gruelling schedule as head of state. "In some ways, the Queen Mother was a mother figure to Charles just because the Queen became Queen when Charles was so young. There were a lot of tours of the Commonwealth and every time the Queen had to go away, Prince Charles stayed with the Queen Mother," Gareth Russell, who has written a biography of the Queen Mother explained to People magazine. "They had a great sense of humour, and she always encouraged him." Birkhall: The King's Secret Sanctuary, airs Saturday 21 June at 7.30pm on Channel 5.
