King Charles' sweet frozen-in-time tribute to loved one who died decades ago
When one of King Charles's loved ones passed away over two decades ago, he was left totally bereft, experts have revealed in a new documentary - and he was so heartbroken he has kept several tributes to them in one of his royal homes
King Charles has a seriously sentimental side - and this heartbreaking tribute to a lost loved one proves just how deep it runs.
More than 20 years ago, Charles lost someone who had been incredibly important to him, and experts have revealed that to this day, he has kept a few key aspects of their belongings in his home in exactly the same place - as if they might walk back in the door any moment now.
The revelation came in the new Channel 5 documentary, Birkhall: The King's Secret Sanctuary, which details the monarch's relationship with one of his absolutely favourite residences.
Birkhall is positioned very near the Royal Family's famous Balmoral estate, where they gather every summer and spend weeks engaged in countryside pursuits like fishing and picnics, in the privacy afforded to them by the Scottish countryside.
The nearby Birkhall is a much more modest home compared to the grandeur of Balmoral, and since his childhood, it is said by the experts to have been one of Charles's favourite places to spend time - in part because of who it previously belonged to, his beloved grandmother, the Queen Mother.
"For Charles, she was this haven of security and affection, and laughter and love," explained former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond. The expert continued that during Charles's unhappy school years in the north of Scotland, his grandmother's home of Birkhall, and the warm relationship they shared, offered the young prince some welcome respite.
"When he was at Gordonstoun school in the north of Scotland, he would, whenever he could, take the two-hour journey to Birkhall to be with his beloved granny."
When the Queen Mother died in 2002 at her home of Royal Lodge, Windsor - at the ripe old age of 101 - the Scottish retreat of Birkhall went to Charles, who was left utterly bereft at the loss.
"For Charles, the loss of his grandmother was absolutely devastating," explained Jennie, but after taking over the property, he started undertaking essential refurbishments, updating the heating systems, and redecorating much of the place with the help of his now-wife Camilla.
However, Charles made sure that the Queen Mother's presence is still felt in the house, "Her coats are still hanging up, on the door...which is really sweet," revealed expert Afua Hagan.
This heartbreaking nod to his grandmother in his favourite home is not the only way he has paid tribute to the Queen Mother, the expert also revealed that he has kept the barometer she used to use to check the weather hanging up.
The Queen Mother was also a huge fan of clocks, the experts revealed, and used to have eight in the dining room alone - all set to "slightly different times" so they would chime out of sync with one another. The Queen Mother's guests were said to have been sent round the bend by this - but this reaction was something the quirky royal "thoroughly enjoyed".
Charles has kept her clocks hanging up, it is revealed in the documentary, "He kept all eight of those grandfather clocks in the dining room," Afua explained, "but he set them all to the same time, so it didn't drive everybody as bonkers as it had done before."
A royal author has previously claimed that the Queen Mother was actually "more of a mother" to her grandson than the late Queen Elizabeth herself - putting this down to the former monarch's gruelling schedule as head of state.
"In some ways, the Queen Mother was a mother figure to Charles just because the Queen became Queen when Charles was so young. There were a lot of tours of the Commonwealth and every time the Queen had to go away, Prince Charles stayed with the Queen Mother," Gareth Russell, who has written a biography of the Queen Mother explained to People magazine. "They had a great sense of humour, and she always encouraged him."
Birkhall: The King's Secret Sanctuary, airs Saturday 21 June at 7.30pm on Channel 5.

Dump Kneecap from Glastonbury line-up demands Starmer after member of group charged with terror offence
THE Prime Minister has called for Glastonbury to axe Kneecap from its line-up after a band member was charged with a terror offence. Sir Keir Starmer said it is 'not appropriate' for the Irish hip hop group to cash in at the festival. 2 2 Rapper Liam Og O hAnnaidh, appeared in court last week accused of displaying a flag in support of banned terror group Hezbollah at a gig. O hAnnaidh, 27, who goes by the stage name Mo Chara, was bailed until later in the summe r — leaving him free to play at Glastonbury. Asked by The Sun on Sunday if he thinks Kneecap should play, the PM, left, said: 'No I don't. 'I think we need to come down really clearly on this. I won't say too much, because there's a court case on, but I don't think that's appropriate.' The Belfast group are due to play the West Holts Stage on Saturday. Bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh have supported O hAnnaidh. They said at court: 'For anybody going to Glastonbury, you can see us there at 4pm on Saturday. Meghan Markle 'terrified' and scared for future as regretful Harry makes major decision over UK return
Meghan Markle is 'scared' to return to the UK and Harry is a 'huge target' Trooping the Colour 2025 marked another significant blow to relations within the Royal Family as Prince Harry steered clear. The Duke of Sussex was not in attendance at last weekend's celebration of the King's official birthday. Queen Camilla joined Charles, as well as Prince William, Kate Middleton and their children George,11, Charlotte,10, and seven year old Louis. Harry was last in the UK in May, where he suffered defeat at the High Court over his ongoing battle to have security measures reinstated for him and his family when they visit from the US. The Duke of Sussex then gave an interview, where he revealed he hoped to reunite with his father but he couldn't bring his family to the UK until wife Meghan Markle and kids Archie, two, and Lilibet, four, were guaranteed to be 'safe'. Now a royal expert claims it's not likely the youngsters will ever build up a close relationship with their cousins, or spend much time in the UK, because of Harry and Meghan's worries, writes the Mirror. Former royal editor Duncan Larcombe said: 'Meghan understandably feels scared about coming to the UK with the children. 'The threats are real and genuine. The threat is from lunatics, radical protesters that might want to make a name for themselves by jumping in front of them. Then of course you have the worst type, the terrorist threat. And there's no doubt Harry – and his family, as a result – is a huge target.' Former actress Meghan recently embarked on a change of direction in her career, with her recent eight-part Netflix show With Love, Meghan topping charts across the globe. Earlier today, she took to social media to share her delight as her lifestyle brand As Ever products once again sold out in minutes following an announcement of a restock earlier this week. She's also been pictured in recent months enjoying a Beyonce gig and shared intimate family moments from a holiday to Disneyland in a reel of posts to Instagram. Earlier this month she and Harry hit the headlines once again as they shared their viral Baby Momma dance clip which was filmed when she went into labour with Lilibet. But despite Meghan feeling 'stronger' than ever and sharing fun parts of her life with fans, she's still hugely worried about the safety of her nearest and dearest. A source told the Mirror: 'In some ways she's feeling stronger and she wants to share that. 'But she's still terrified of putting her kids at risk by coming back to the UK – any parent would panic if they were in Meghan's shoes. 'So even though Harry is really feeling the absence of his dad, especially after Trooping the Colour and Father's Day, the security stuff will probably always be an issue. 'He knows that things could've been so different if things had gone another way, but it's been five years since they left the UK and the chances of them coming back, even for a visit, seem slim to none. It's heartbreaking.' In May, Harry gave a controversial interview with the BBC in which he said he 'would love reconciliation' with his family. Duncan Larcombe reckons that the duke is probably 'full of regrets' now about being so candid. He added: 'Harry is a sensitive soul and always wore his heart on his sleeve, so whether he'd admit it publicly or not, I'm sure he's full of regrets and wishes he'd done things differently. 'With Trooping the Colour and Father's Day falling on the same weekend, it was bound to make him look back at the happy relationships he once had with his brother and dad, and I'm sure he'd love to be able to rebuild those.' Duncan also states that Princess Diana's death is something that is an ever-present thought for Meghan and Harry, as a 'contributing factor' to her horror crash in Paris in 1997 was the lack of official protection from the Metropolitan Police. The expert explains that official royal security is armed and round the clock, provided by top Met Police officers as well as MI5, who 'surround them in a ring'. He added: 'Without the official support and security, Harry and Meghan are left with two or three bodyguards who are pretty blind to what the potential threats are.' Zara McDermott announces 'step back' from social media as she shares motivation
Former Love Island star Zara McDermott has spoken about deciding to take a step back from social media, with the update coming ahead of her new documentary's release TV presenter Zara McDermott has opened up about taking a step back from social media. The former Love Island star shared the reasons for her absence in a message to her fans this week ahead of her latest documentary's release. Zara, 28, has worked on several projects for the BBC, including having fronted various documentaries, since rising to fame as an islander on the ITV2 show. Her next one, the two-part To Catch a Stalker, is set to launch on July 1. She's now thanked fans for their support and revealed that she has "taken a bit of a step back" from social media, which she said can feel like a "quite heavy" space, lately. Zara said she had focused on work and being present instead. In a message on Instagram yesterday, she wrote: "I also just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who messaged me with regards to the story I posted the other day. If you didn't see it; I spoke about developing my next documentary and how I've been thinking of how to create a project about domestic abuse, coercive control and tech abuse." Zara said that she received many responses. She shared: "I had thousands of messages and I'm still going through them, but I wanted to say the biggest thank you ever." She added: "It's so nice speaking to you all because I've definitely taken a bit of a step back from socials to focus on my documentaries & other work / just focusing on being more present recently. Social media feels quite a heavy & negative space sometimes ... so to be able to feel like we can work together to do something super positive is a great feeling. Thank you again." The presenter continued by expressing her gratitude for the support she has from fans. She said in her message this week: "Forever grateful for all of you who continue to support the work that I do. It really means SO much!" Zara went on to express concern over misinformation and people "hiding" behind social media accounts. Speaking about a project, she said: "It was really interesting to dive into the psychology of how we, as humans, can get so embroiled in this behaviour and how we can easily be fooled into believing what we are reading." She continued: "A lot of you suggested a deeper dive into the Tattle unmasking that's been in the press recently and that's something I'm definitely keen to explore a bit further!" Zara concluded by thanking fans for the suggestion. Zara's message for fans comes after her ex-partner Sam Thompson and Louis Tomlinson, whom she's been linked to in recent months, competed in Soccer Aid last weekend. The situation attracted much attention and made headlines. There was said to have been an awkward dynamic between Sam and Louis whilst at the event, which was held at Old Trafford stadium in Greater Manchester on June 11. The pair didn't play on the pitch at the same time though.
