However, they've given fans renewed hope over his performance as the film's Big Bad
Ever since Robert Downey Jr took to the stage at Comic-Con 2024 to reveal he'd be playing Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it's safe to say fans have been divided into two camps.
Indeed, Marvel optimists believe the returning MCU superstar, who previously played Tony Stark and Iron Man between 2008 and 2019, is a great fit for the Multiverse Saga's new Big Bad. However, others hold the opinion that his return is a sign of the comic titan's desperation amid the mixed reception to its recent film and TV releases.
It seems, though, that the number of those who were seated firmly in the naysayers' camp is slowly dwindling. That's been particularly noticeable over the past few days, too, especially in light of new behind-the-scenes images that Downey Jr has posted from the Avengers: Doomsday set.
It should be noted that there are no story spoilers for Doomsday from this point onwards. Nevertheless, I feel compelled to say that, if you don't want to know a single thing about the highly anticipated Marvel Phase 6 film, you're best turning back now.
The first image, which was uploaded to Downey Jr's Instagram account on May 14, showed the A-lister reading fellow MCU actor Jeremy Renner's recently-released autobiography.
Ordinarily, you'd think that's nothing worth reporting on. But if you look closer at said photograph, you'll notice two things.
For one, Downey Jr is wearing a muscle suit. This implies his take on one of The Fantastic Four's most notorious foes will be as physically imposing as he is mentally, and suggests he'll be able to go toe-to-toe with many of the Marvel heroes who were included as part of Doomsday's initial 27-strong cast.
The other, arguably more important detail is the black dots on Downey Jr's face. This indicates that, with a bit of CGI trickery, Marvel will give Downey Jr's Doctor Victor von Doom his unmistakable scarred face, which he usually hides behind his iconic metal-based mask.
Now, this doesn't confirm that Downey Jr won't show his face as Doom at some point in one of 2026's new movies. My reading of the situation, though, is that his disfigured face will be covered by said mask for a fair amount of this movie's runtime. I believe it'll only be revealed if his mask is knocked off during a fight, or if Doom wants his adversaries to take a look at the permanent physical damage he's endured in his potential quest to halt (or cause, we don't know which yet) the Multiverse's destruction.
The other image, which appeared online yesterday (May 16), doesn't contain any teases that might spark new fan theories about this iteration of Doom. Nonetheless, it's intriguing to see that Downey Jr is reading Marvel comics that star Doom, especially ones written by Jonathan Hickman.
For the uninitiated: Hickman is the scribe behind the 2015 edition of Marvel's 'Secret Wars' comic series. Joe and Anthony Russo, who returned to the MCU alongside Downey Jr to direct the next two Avengers films, previously told me that Hickman's run, plus the original 'Secret Wars' storyline, have inspired the plot of Doomsday and its sequel, aka the 2027 MCU flick Avengers: Secret Wars.
Considering both comic runs will influence this movie duo, it's no great surprise to see Downey Jr reading Marvel literary works penned by Hickman, especially those that involve Doom. Downey Jr is someone who appears to conduct plenty of research for whatever role he's playing, but it's still pleasing to see that he'll tackle this role with the same gusto and seriousness as any other.
Such preparation hasn't gone unnoticed, either. As I alluded to at the beginning of this article, fans have unsurprisingly picked up on the work that Downey Jr is putting into this role, and many are becoming increasingly impressed. Indeed, a quick scan of threads on the Marvel Studios and Marvel Studios Spoilers Reddit pages confirms as much.
Of course, as the saying goes, the proof will be in the pudding as to whether Downey Jr's performance is as good as fans expect. I'm still concerned that his Doom will be revealed as a multiversal Stark variant, which would be the wrong approach to take for such an iconic Marvel supervillain. That said, I have renewed hope that Downey Jr will be a good, if not great, Doom, and these images definitely prove why he likely will be.

The Newest Marvel/DC Crossover Will Have Some Fun Team-Ups
In May, Marvel Comics and DC finally confirmed they were doing a new crossover for the first time in over 20 years. At the time, we only knew it'd involve Deadpool and Batman teaming up in a pair of one-shots from Zeb Wells and Greg Capullo (Marvel) and Grant Morrison and Dan Mora (DC). Thanks to the latest Marvel solicitations for the month of August, we know the full scope of the crossover on its side of things. Each story also gets its own variant cover, and you can see most of them down below. That's a solid lineup of fan favorites and heavy hitters, helped by the fact none of the human characters spent time together in prior crossovers. Marvel and DC have already confirmed there's more hangouts coming: Batman/Deadpool is dropping in November, and there's another set of one-shots coming in 2026. DC's currently mum on whether its one-shot will have extra stories, and both are just as quiet on other heroes waiting in the wings in future installments, or if these are leading to something bigger on the horizon. Jon Bernthal Lands Role in Major Marvel Film Alongside Tom Holland
Jon Bernthal is bringing the Punisher to the big screen—and this time, he's stepping into the world of Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Bernthal has officially joined the cast of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the upcoming installment in Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man franchise. Directed by Shang-Chi filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie begins filming in England this summer and is slated for release on July 31, 2026, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Plot details remain tightly guarded, but the return of Bernthal's Frank Castle hints at a darker, more street-level tone than recent Spider-Man entries. If The Punisher In ‘Spider-Man' Rumor Was True, Is Savage Hulk Next?
The Punisher/Hulk Back in 2019, it seemed up in the air whether we'd ever see Jon Bernthal's Punisher again, given the cancellation of all Netflix series and the absence of his character going forward. Now, he's everywhere. It's now been confirmed that Bernthal's Punisher will be coming to, of all places, the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth film in the series. It's the unusual blending of the most brutal, R-rated antihero in the MCU with one of its most family-friendly offerings in Spider-Man, raising questions about what's going on here. Yes, the two have paired up many times in the comics, but this is certainly the highest-profile instance of that ever now. There's one aspect of this that's also a bit eyebrow-raising. The rumors that The Punisher was joining Spider-Man in his film is an old one, going all the way back to January. But now in late May, insider Jeff Sneider and John Rocha discussed the report again, saying that trustworthy sources said that the plan was for The Punisher was to join forces with Spider-Man to fight against The Hulk. Spider-Man Yes, The Hulk, former Avenger, and with the last time we saw him being the 'smart' version training his cousin She-Hulk in the ways of Hulkdom, also revealing that he had a son out of nowhere, and his mini-plotline seemed to be leading to some sort of upcoming comic-based Planet Hulk/World War Hulk storyline that never materialized. This is, of course, not that. We have no idea what would have transformed chill Banner Hulk into some sort of monstrous Savage Hulk, another version. This is also in the wake of Captain America: Brave New World having Red Hulk as its antagonist (a film that almost felt like a Hulk sequel that did not contain Hulk). So, if the Punisher part of the rumor is true, the question is whether or not the rest of it is, and Hulk really may be the big bad in Spider-Man 4. The news also comes with the confirmation that Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are reportedly back as MJ and Ned in some capacity, despite the ending, which hinted the series was moving on from them. The other high-profile casting is Stranger Things' Sadie Sink in an unknown role that most guess is either 'real' MJ, Mary Jane, or perhaps Gwen Stacy. Bernthal went from nowhere in the MCU to one of its most prolific stars. He will be in both seasons of Daredevil: Born Again, he's starring in his own 'special' on Disney Plus later. Now he's in Spider-Man. Tom Holland and Bernthal have a long history. They helped each other audition for their respective roles way back then, and currently, they're starring in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey together. Now, this is going to be one hell of a team-up.
