Beyond Paradise's Kris Marshall reveals DI Humphrey inspiration after 10 years
Beyond Paradise favourite Kris Marshall has revealed the inspiration behind his character of the hit BBC series - recognise any of these big names?
Marshall has been playing the role of DI Humphrey Goodman for the last decade but has admitted he still hasn't worked out what exactly makes the character a great detective.
However, Beyond Paradise fans might not know that the Shipton Abbott resident is inspired by some of the detectives Marshall grew up watching on television.

Ahead of the Death in Paradise spin-off returning later this month, the 51-year-old told PA news agency that DI Humphrey is 'gleaned from a love of all the detectives I grew up with'.
He added: 'Columbo, Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files, there's a bit of Harold Lloyd in there.
'There's Barnaby Jones and I put in little homages to them all the time. Marple even, Miss Marple.'
Also speaking about his character, Marshall explained: 'I think, well, his M.O. really is that he's morally quite a good guy. So that's a good foundation for him to start from. He's not without his foibles, but I think what I particularly love about him and find intriguing, is that he is both disarming whilst being armed.
'I still haven't worked out – since the time I've been on Death in Paradise – whether it's an affectation or whether it's something he just does. So whether it's something he does on purpose or not, I don't know. I still haven't worked it out. And I've been playing the character for 10 years.'
The actor, known for playing Nick Harper in the BBC sitcom My Family continued: 'But he comes in and basically presents himself as a bit of an idiot, or someone who doesn't really know what he's doing, and that's obvious in the first episode (of the new series), with Hugh Dennis' character as well.
'He just presents himself as someone who just obviously doesn't have a clue about what's going on, and then he goes straight for the jugular. The whole time there's this binary code going on behind his eyes, he's on a different level and yet he's dyspraxic.
'I'd like to think that this is something that just happens because I think it would be cynical if it was an affectation. But I kind of almost like not solving that in my own head. I like to sort of leave it out there a bit and see.'

Joan Collins, 92, stuns fans with new picture of rarely-seen daughter Katy
Actress Joan Collins sparked a wholesome fan reaction on Sunday when she shared an ultra-rare photograph of her youngest daughter, Katy. In a celebratory birthday post shared to Instagram, the Dynasty star uploaded a beaming snapshot that showed the pair posing together at a round table. Dressed to impress, Joan, 91, looked radiant wearing a ruched coffee-hued top which she teamed with a cream blazer emblazoned with a pink and navy check pattern. The legendary TV star elevated her look with a wide-brim hat, pearlescent disc earrings and a statement pearl crucifix. Katy, meanwhile, looked stylish dressed in a chic quilted jacket and a black beanie. Paying tribute to Katy on her birthday, Joan wrote in her caption: "My beautiful #daughter Katy enjoying the happiest of birthdays last Friday #daughtersareforever #daughterslove." Fans and friends quickly inundated the comments section with touching messages. One wrote: "Beautiful photo of you both", while a second added: "What a beautiful photo of you both", and a third commented: "Happy birthday Katy. I love her jacket!" Joan shares Katyana Kass, known affectionately as Katy, with her third husband, Ron Kass. Whilst Katy tends to avoid the spotlight, Joan did open up about her daughter in her 2023 BBC Documentary titled This Is Joan. Sharing a glimpse into their family life, Joan revealed that Katy suffered a traumatic car accident when she was eight years old. "She was knocked down by a car and sustained very serious brain injuries and I was told that she was going to die. She was in a coma for a very long time," Joan said. Aside from Katy, Joan is also a doting mother to her two eldest children, Alexander and Tara, whom she shares with her second husband, Anthony Newely. Tara is a journalist and screenwriter, while Alexander is a published author and artist. Musing on motherhood, Joan previously told In 2018: "What makes me happiest is seeing my children happy. Honestly, life makes me happy and I'm very aware of how lucky I am." Joan has been married five times in total; to Maxwell Reed, Antony Newley, Ron Kass, Peter Holm and Percy Gibson, to whom she has been happily married since 2002. Lovebirds Percy and Joan crossed paths in 2000 before going on to tie the knot in 2002. While Joan initially had no intention of remarrying, she felt an instant connection with her "soulmate" Percy and subsequently changed her mind. "It is my fifth marriage, and my happiest, and last" Joan previously told us. "Percy is wonderful, he's my soulmate. That doesn't mean we don't bicker but we are very understanding of each other."

From ‘Silent Witness' To BBC News Polska, The BBC Plans To Deepen Its Reach In CEE And Beyond
From Silent Witness to news, BBC content is going deeper into homes in the CEE and wider region, via dedicated channels, the BBC Player on-demand service, and a new Polish-language news site, launching this week. Bartosz Witak is tasked with increasing BBC Studios' regional presence. When he sat down with Deadline one year ago at the NEM market in Dubrovnik, he was months into his new job as General Manager for BBC Studios across CEE. He has since added Turkey and the Middle East & North Africa to his purview and built out his team, adding new ad sales, marketing, comms, and research execs. He is now scouting for a Programming Director for all of CEE & MENAT. More from Deadline Australian 'Guilt' Remake; Nine Entertainment Restructure; 'Lemurian Candidate' Adds Cast; British Short Film Awards Sold - Global Briefs Melanie Rumani Dies: BBC Studios & UKTV Global Head Of Acquisitions Battled Cancer International Insider: Animated In Annecy; Warner Split; Sarandos In Spain From his Warsaw HQ, Witak's job is to get the BBC's British fare into more homes and join the dots across the BBC Studios business, which spans channels, digital, program sales, events and more… and to do that across a wide patchwork of territories. 'We are sitting on a goldmine of tens of thousands of hours of content,' he said. 'The worst type of content you can imagine is the content that is left on the shelf. That doesn't work for anyone, so we are trying to properly structure and strategize and window.' BBC Player – which is distinct from the UK iPlayer and the drama-skewed Britbox offerings – is a growing part of the business. Witak's team inked new distribution deals for the on-demand service with CDA Premium in Poland, Cosmote in Greece, Slovak Telekom's Magio TV and T-Mobile's Magenta TV in the Czech Republic in the past year. The nature of the TV biz in CEE is, as the recent deals illustrate, about working with many different partners. 'This part of the world has actually made us entrepreneurial, because you do not deal with one or two big clients,' Witak explained. 'You do not have territories of a massive capacity, value wise. You have to constantly keep bundling, keep building, keep leveraging [multiple] third-party partners.' BBC Player is not a sold directly to viewers like a Netflix or Prime Video, but is launched in partnership with existing pay TV players, telcos and now, in the case of CDA Premium, with a streamer. 'We do not sell direct to consumer, because we are not Netflix or Max or Disney,' Witak said, before drilling down into the CDA Premium deal. 'We sell bold British creative content, and for the first time, we decided to launch with a partner that is an online streaming service, which is a slightly different model than previously, where we partnered with more traditional cable satellite operators.' In news, a Polish-language BBC News Polska site launches June 24 with original content from the BBC's Polish-speaking broadcasters including Kasia Madera and Tomasz Schafernaker. Other BBC news reports will be translated using artificial intelligence. The BBC said the service for Polish speakers 'will help counter a wave of disinformation in the region.' It is a sign of things to come in the world of news. When the Polish service was first announced, the BBC spoke of 'bold plans to pilot more non-English-language content where there is a demand for independent, impartial news as press freedom reduces globally and disinformation is rife.' In terms of the traditional channels business, the BBC Studios CEE and MENAT team have agreed numerous recent deals. The BBC Earth and BBC First channels launched to Czech customers via Vodafone and a trio of BBC-branded channels also launched with the same telco in Romania. Elsewhere, a big channels distribution deal with pay-TV service Polsat Box was also renegotiated. Looking at the big picture, Witak concludes that his job is providing a through line for the array of BBC Studios activities. 'It's about connecting the dots and talking to the market as one team, one brand, one solution. That doesn't mean that me or my team talk [to partners] about everything at the same time, we have different divisions: production, brand licensing, consumer products, events and many others. But the most important thing is to make sure that we are the face of the business.' Looking ahead, he added: 'One thing is continue building the reach for any service, any product that we are deploying in a given territory. The second thing is how we are monetizing these products and services in all these territories across the regions. Another element is to build digital products.' Russell T. Davies Hits Pause on DOCTOR WHO's Future: 'We Don't Know What's Happening Yet' — GeekTyrant
Doctor Who might have just wrapped up its latest season with one of the wildest twists in the show's 60-year history, but behind the scenes, things sound less certain. In the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, showrunner Russell T Davies admitted that the future of the series is, for the moment, in limbo. While he's made it clear that the show isn't over, the details on what's coming next are very much up in the air. Davies wrote in his production diary column: 'We don't know what's happening yet, and while everyone works that out, I'll take a pause on this page … Hopefully, we'll have news soon.' A source added: 'This letter is a production notes diary for when the show is in production, or on air, and as Russell has stated within the piece, it is a pause.' The uncertainty follows a finale that saw Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor regenerate into… Billie Piper, aka Rose Tyler, one of the most beloved companions in the modern era. Davies doubled down on the surprise without offering much in the way of clarity. 'No, not the end, don't be mad, Doctor Who will never end! There are pathways leading to potential futures – we've still got the mystery of that bright and blazing ending, 'Oh, hello,' yes indeed, hello Billie! And there's Susan, of course. I wonder if we'll ever find out who the Boss is. Or who the Boss are.' It's still unclear whether Piper is actually the new Doctor or part of something more experimental. Even the credits played coy, with no confirmation that she's taking over the role full-time. The BBC hasn't exactly been gentle about it either. A Dead Ringers parody of the finale skewered the twist, with the Doctor quipping, 'Laters, I'm going to regenerate into Billie Piper for clicks!' For now, the only sure thing is that a new Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea , is on its way. So, more Who is coming. Just maybe not in the way we expected. Via: Deadline
