KUCHING (June 12): The Sessions Court here today fined a private healthcare company RM50,000 for operating an unlicensed ambulatory care centre in 2023.
Judge Iris Awen Jon imposed the fine after the company's director pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 3(c) of the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998, punishable under Section 5(1)(b) of the same Act.
The Section provides for a fine not exceeding RM500,000 upon conviction.
According to the charge, the company had operated a private ambulatory care centre without a licence.
The offence was committed at the company's premises located at Jalan Simpang Tiga here around 11am on April 6, 2023.
Based on the facts of the case, the Sarawak Health Department through its Private Medical Practice Control Section raided the premises on suspicion of operating an ambulatory care centre without approval from the Ministry of Health.
During the inspection, two individuals acting as representatives of the premises failed to produce any documents related to the registration or licensing of the facility when requested by enforcement officers.
Based on the testimony and evidence gathered during the inspection, it was found that the premises was operating as a private ambulatory care centre without a valid licence, offering medical treatments including enhanced external counter pulsation (EECP) therapy and intravenous drip treatment.
The raiding team also seized various medications and equipment, including a stethoscope, blood pressure set, automated external defibrillator device, EECP machine, electrocardiogram machine, oxygen cylinder, Nitroglycerin Sublingual tablets, Sodium Chloride 0.9 per cent solution, patient records, and other documents.
During the proceedings, Sarawak Health Department prosecuting officer Norzaizeli Abu Samah urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the company, citing public interest and potential medico-legal implications in the event of medical negligence.
She noted that the company had offered EECP treatment at its premises, administered by a general practitioner.
Norzaizeli stressed that such treatment requires – at minimum – a licensed private ambulatory care centre overseen by a cardiologist or internal medicine specialist.
The company was represented by lawyer Daniel Ling. fine private healthcare company unlicensed ambulatory care centre

RM200,000 allocated under RTP 2026 for further upgrades at Kota Sentosa Hospital

Yap (front, sixth left) gets ready to lead the ribbon-cutting ceremony. KUCHING (June 21): An allocation of RM200,000 under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2026 grant has been disbursed for further upgrading works on Kota Sentosa Hospital. This was announced by Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap at a recent ceremony held to mark the completion of an earlier RTP project worth RM400,000 at the hospital. 'This project may seem modest in scale, but its impact has been truly significant, addressing two critical needs of the hospital that have long required urgent attention,' he said. The completed project involved the construction of 40 new carpark spots complete with earthworks, bitumen-surfacing, carpark line painting, and drainage works, resolving a long-standing parking shortage for staff and visitors. Additionally, the occupational therapy and rehabilitation hall was comprehensively upgraded with full electrical rewiring, 11 new split-unit air-conditioners, new windows, a renovated stage and backdrop, a brick wall partition for an office and counselling room, and repainting throughout the facility. 'These improvements have created a more conducive, safe, and comfortable environment for both staff and patients,' added Yap. The assemblyman also expressed appreciation to the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), the implementing agency, for completing the project on time and in accordance with the set specifications. 'As the elected representative for Kota Sentosa, I remain deeply committed to fighting for more funding to ensure that our public health facilities are not left behind,' he said. Yap stressed that another RM200,000 would be channelled under RTP 2026 for additional urgent works on the hospital. Kota Sentosa Hospital lead RTP upgrade Wilfred Yap

Bursa Malaysia, Grab channel zakat to aid 500 kidney patients

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 500 kidney patients from the asnaf group in the Federal Territories will receive RM300 Grab ride vouchers each to help ease transportation to dialysis treatment centres. The RM150,000 contribution was made through wakalah zakat funds from Bursa Malaysia (RM100,000) and Grab Malaysia (RM50,000), under the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP). Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the initiative aims to ease the financial burden of patients who require long-term dialysis treatment. 'With the high cost of transportation, especially for those who need to travel several times a week, this burden can be overwhelming. 'This contribution may not be much, but I hope it can at least help make things easier for the patients so they can focus better on their treatment,' he said at the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ)-MAIWP Ziarah Kasih programme at the Batu Muda MAIWP-PICOMS Haemodialysis Centre here today. Also present were University College of MAIWP International (UCMI) chief executive officer and vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Noor Inayah Yaakub, Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed and Grab Malaysia country operations and mobility director Rashid Shukor. Meanwhile, Fad'l said the wakalah zakat contribution reflected Bursa Malaysia's commitment to supporting initiatives that bring a positive impact to society. 'We believe a company's success is not only measured by financial performance or operational excellence, but also by its contribution to community wellbeing and sustainability practices,' he said. Fad'l added that the collaboration with PPZ-MAIWP was an example of how zakat could be effectively channelled to ease the burden of the underprivileged. He said Bursa Malaysia would continue to play an active role in leveraging zakat as a social finance tool, while encouraging public-listed companies to give back to the community.

Melaka United ordered to pay nearly RM700,000 after player killed by lightning

Published on: Thursday, June 19, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 19, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: The Melaka High Court awarded AU$192,000 (RM528,000) for loss of dependency, RM120,000 for failure to insure the player, and RM50,000 in legal costs. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: The High Court in Melaka has ordered the Melaka United Soccer Association (Musa) to pay nearly RM700,000 following the death of an 18-year-old Australian player who was struck by lightning nine years ago. Stefan Petrovski, an 18-year-old goalkeeper with Melaka United, was hit by lightning while training at the Hang Jebat Stadium on April 3, 2016. He died nearly a month later, on May 1, from brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen. Advertisement His father, Marco Petrovski, sued Musa and 15 of its officials for negligence and failing to provide a safe environment for his son. The family claimed that no automated external defibrillators (AED) were available during training, no doctor was present at the session, and training was not stopped despite rain increasing the risk of lightning. They also said Musa failed to take out a personal accident insurance policy as required by the player's contract. Justice Radzi Abdul Hamid ruled that Musa was negligent and had a duty of care to protect Petrovski as a professional player. The court awarded AU$192,000 (RM528,000) for loss of dependency, RM120,000 for failure to insure the player, and RM50,000 in legal costs. The judge rejected Musa's defence that a panel doctor did not have to be present at training sessions, stating that Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) rules required at least one doctor to be available during both matches and training. 'The defendants contended that under FAM regulations, a doctor does not need to be at the training session,' said Radzi. 'This court disagreed with the defendants' contention… It makes no sense to appoint the doctor who is absent and must be called to the location in the event of a medical emergency. 'The defendants also failed to adequately train their staff to use AED, as well as to respond to cardiac related emergencies, which contributed to Petrovski's death.' The court also ruled that the association had breached their contractual obligations with Petrovski after it failed to insure him. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
