(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: The High Court in Melaka has ordered the Melaka United Soccer Association (Musa) to pay nearly RM700,000 following the death of an 18-year-old Australian player who was struck by lightning nine years ago. Stefan Petrovski, an 18-year-old goalkeeper with Melaka United, was hit by lightning while training at the Hang Jebat Stadium on April 3, 2016. He died nearly a month later, on May 1, from brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen.
Advertisement His father, Marco Petrovski, sued Musa and 15 of its officials for negligence and failing to provide a safe environment for his son. The family claimed that no automated external defibrillators (AED) were available during training, no doctor was present at the session, and training was not stopped despite rain increasing the risk of lightning. They also said Musa failed to take out a personal accident insurance policy as required by the player's contract. Justice Radzi Abdul Hamid ruled that Musa was negligent and had a duty of care to protect Petrovski as a professional player. The court awarded AU$192,000 (RM528,000) for loss of dependency, RM120,000 for failure to insure the player, and RM50,000 in legal costs. The judge rejected Musa's defence that a panel doctor did not have to be present at training sessions, stating that Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) rules required at least one doctor to be available during both matches and training. 'The defendants contended that under FAM regulations, a doctor does not need to be at the training session,' said Radzi. 'This court disagreed with the defendants' contention… It makes no sense to appoint the doctor who is absent and must be called to the location in the event of a medical emergency. 'The defendants also failed to adequately train their staff to use AED, as well as to respond to cardiac related emergencies, which contributed to Petrovski's death.' The court also ruled that the association had breached their contractual obligations with Petrovski after it failed to insure him. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Mental health is a shared societal responsibility: Arifin

Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Mental well-being must be seen as a collective responsibility, forming the backbone of a healthy and balanced society, said Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif ( pic ) on Monday. Speaking at the Regional Webinar on Psychological and Spiritual Well-being 2025 hosted by Ipdas, Arifin stressed the link between community wellness and a stable psychological foundation. He cited 2022 Health Ministry data showing alarming rates of depression (26.9 per cent), loneliness (16.2 per cent), and suicidal thoughts (13.1 per cent) among Malaysian teenagers, calling it a national concern requiring urgent integrated action. Arifin argued that psychology and spirituality must be addressed together, warning that neglecting one undermines the other and weakens community resilience. He said mental health is a core element of the Sabah Maju Jaya plan, aligning with national Madani efforts to embed emotional and spiritual well-being into development policies. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Minjee Lee keeps cool to bag third Major title

Australian Minjee Lee captured her third Major title with a composed victory at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship on Sunday. Lee carded a closing two-over-par 74 at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco for a tournament total of four-under-par 284, three shots ahead of American Auston Kim and Thailand's Chanettee Wannasaen. This was Lee's first victory on the LPGA Tour since the 2023 BMW Ladies Championship. Earlier rounds of 69, 72 and 69 had given Lee a four-shot lead over Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul heading into the final day. Although the chasing pack managed to narrow the deficit to two shots at various stages, the Australian handled the pressure and windy conditions with poise to seal the win with five bogeys and three birdies. 'It feels pretty amazing. I feel like I really deserve this one. I put a lot of hard work into it. I had to really dig deep for today's score, but I feel like I was pretty solid over the four days to have this trophy in my hand now,' said Lee, whose previous Major wins came at the 2022 U.S. Women's Open presented by Ally and The Amundi Evian Championship in 2021. Kim and Wannasaen both shot solid 68s to move up the leaderboard into a share of second place on one-under-par 287, two shots clear of Thitikul and Japan's Chisato Iwai. World No. 2 Thitikul, who had led the first and second rounds, had disappointing weekend scores of 76 and 75 to settle for joint fourth place with Iwai on one-over-par 289. The popular Thai star has won five times on the LPGA Tour but is still hunting for a maiden Major title. Lee's first LPGA Tour win since the 2023 BMW Ladies Championship took her title tally to 11. The 29-year-old now needs to win the AIG Women's Open or The Chevron Championship to complete the career Grand Slam. Lee is the third Australian to win three or more Major championships, joining Karrie Webb (7) and Jan Stephenson (3). The KPMG Women's PGA Championship has now been won by four Australians– Lee (2025), Hannah Green (2019), Webb (2001) and Stephenson (1982). 'It's just really special. Only three other names on this trophy are Australian, so I think it's such a great privilege to be able to have my name with them as well. I guess it shows the grit of the Aussies,' noted Lee. The next stop for the LPGA Tour is Midland Country Club in Michigan for this week's two-player team format Dow Championship. This will be followed by a one-week break before the players head across the Atlantic for the tour's much-awaited European swing, which includes the final two Majors of the 2025 season – The Amundi Evian Championship (July 10-13) at Evian Resort in France and the AIG Women's Open (July 31-August 3) at Royal Porthcawl in Wales.

GASTAK Denies Withholding Prize Money from Players

THE sepak takraw association of kelantan (gastak) has denied claims that players of the Kelantan Warriors were not paid last season's Division 1 League prize money. In a statement, GASTAK said the issue, which went viral on social media, stemmed from a misunderstanding. Each player received RM5,000 at a Sept 9 event, which included the league prize money, it said. GASTAK said it had also paid out nearly RM40,000 in bonuses and awards, including Best Tekong and Best Right Apit (Attacker) prizes, before receiving the official prize money in October. To address the ongoing discontent, GASTAK's Supreme Council decided on May 18 to provide an additional RM500 token to each player during the 2025 Player Introduction Dinner. Citing a Facebook post by player Fakhrul Akmal, GASTAK said he received RM11,000 over six weeks, covering salary, allowances, bonus and prize money, not including travel or unpaid leave reimbursements. The association reiterated that bonuses are at management's discretion per contract terms and warned that it will consider legal action if false claims continue.
