Osimhen's Man Utd rejection after having "too much respect" to compete with flop
Victor Osimhen is on Manchester United's radar but he previously rejected the prospect of a move to Old Trafford due to having too much respect for one of their strikers
Victor Osimhen has previously rejected a move to Manchester United out of respect for one of his compatriots as he claimed he had "too much respect" to battle with him for a starting berth.
That was way back in 2020, just before he joined Napoli. It was during his stint with Lille that Osimhen first put himself on the map and his goalscoring exploits made a number of clubs stand up and take note. United were among them, but the Italian side eventually won the race.
Osimhen's refusal to join the Premier League side stemmed from the fact they then had Odion Ighalo on their books. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer raised eyebrows when he went and signed the former Watford man to address the team's attacking issues.
Ighalo had a bright start, but quickly tailed off and his record by the time he left Manchester stood at five goals in 23 games. That said, he was one of the senior Nigerian players of his generation and Osimhen had great respect for the player who was nine years his senior.
The Napoli frontman felt he couldn't compete with his fellow countryman for a starting spot knowing that ultimately one of them would lose out, which motivated his move to Italy.
Osimhen's brother, Andrew, told Complete Sports: "It is very true that Manchester United wanted Victor, but he told me something like he had too much respect for Odion Ighalo to be competing for shirts with his senior colleague. My brother holds Ighalo in high esteem and he just didn't see himself going to Old Trafford to battle for a striking role with the highest goalscorer at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt."
Fast forward five years and Osimhen heading to Manchester could yet materialise. Despite firing Napoli to the Serie A title several years ago the striker is now surplus to requirements whilst Antonio Conte remains at the helm.
He has bought in Romelu Lukaku and backed the Belgian as his leading light in attack. It forced Osimhen to head out on loan last term but he continued to be prolific whilst at Galatasaray. Now back in Italy, he is likely to be sold once a buyer can be found.
Already this summer he has turned down a move to Saudi Arabia, underlining his desire to stay in Europe and ex-United star Rio Ferdinand is among those to endorse a move for the Nigerian.
He said: "I think if I'm looking at the market now and I had to pick him (Viktor Gyokeres) or Osimhen, I'd probably pick Osimhen because of that experience."

Now 56, he has been kept out of public view ever since, with only a select number of visitors allowed inside the family home near Lake Geneva in Switzerland, where he is receiving round-the-clock medical care. Earlier this month, one of his former team bosses, Flavio Briatore, revealed he is in regular communication with Schumacher's wife, Corinna. The Italian, who was in charge at Benetton, where the German won his first two F1 titles, told Corriere della Sera: "If I close my eyes, I see him smiling after a victory. "I prefer to remember him like that rather than him just lying on a bed. Corinna and I talk often, though." That followed a more detailed update from Briatore's ex-wife, Elisabetta Gregoraci, who claimed: "Michael doesn't speak, he communicates with his eyes. Only three people can visit him and I know who they are." Following that update, here is what we know to be true about Schumacher's condition… Article continues below Claims Schumacher could walk In 2016,German magazine Bunte claimed in an article Schumacher was able to walk and "raise an arm". It raised huge hopes among fans amid previous rumours of progress in his condition. However, the Schumacher family took legal action against the magazine, with the report branded 'irresponsible' . The court hearing resulted in Schumacher's lawyer, Felix Damm, revealing that the then-47-year-old was unable to walk or stand, even with assistance. 'Unfortunately, we are forced by a recent press report to clarify that the assertion that Michael could move again is not true,' a family statement said. 'Such speculation is irresponsible because, given the seriousness of his injuries, his privacy is very important for Michael. Unfortunately, they also give false hopes to many involved people.' Reported stem cell treatment In 2019, Schumacher was reported to have undergone stem cell treatment in an effort to regenerate his nervous system. Le Parisien claimed he was admitted for transfusions of inflammation-reducing stem cells, and also quoted an anonymous nurse who claimed Schumacher was showing signs of recovery. "Yes he is in my service," the nurse said. "And I can assure you that he is conscious." However, the racer is believed to have developed muscle atrophy and osteoporosis after being bed-bound. French magazine Paris Match spoke to what it described as "close relatives" ahead of his 50th birthday in January 2019. The magazine quoted one as saying: "When you put him in his wheelchair facing the beautiful panorama of the mountains overlooking the lake, Michael sometimes cries." The Schumacher family refused to comment on any of the reports or confirm the stem cell treatment. Daughter's wedding claim rebuffed Reports surfaced in Germany last year claiming Schumacher was present at the wedding of his daughter, Gina-Maria, and Iain Bethke in Majorca. While the family does have a home on the Spanish island, reports that Michael attended his daughter's nuptials were dismissed as 'fake news'. One of his former team-mates, Johnny Herbert, said: 'Unfortunately, from what I understand, that was all A1 fake news and no truth in it.' The seven-time world champion signed his initials 'MS' on the helmet with the aid of Corinna. It will be auctioned to raise money for Stewart's Race Against Dementia charity, set up by the three-time world champion after his wife Helen began suffering from the disease. Stewart confirmed to the Daily Mail: 'It is wonderful that Michael could sign the helmet in this worthy cause, a disease for which there is no cure." However, Stewart did also dispel the idea that Schumacher did the act by himself, adding: "His wife helped him, and it completed the set of every single champion still with us.' The Frenchman has offered updates about his friend's condition while asking for the media to respect the family's privacy. Todt told La Repubblica earlier this year: 'The family has decided not to answer the question [on his condition], a choice that I respect. "I see him regularly and with affection, him and his family. Our bond goes beyond the past work. It is part of my life, which today is very far from Formula 1." Schumacher's inner circle Earlier this year, Felix Gorner – a reporter for RTL – said that Schumacher is "completely dependant" on caregivers and "can no longer express himself verbally". Gorner added that 20 people have access to the former Mercedes driver, a deliberate choice by the family to protect his privacy. 'We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable, and to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will.'

Antonio Conte is renowned for his intense style but John Terry once asked the Italian to tone it down during his Chelsea stint - only for the manager to ultimately ignore his request Antonio Conte admits he was asked to tone down the intensity of training when he was Chelsea boss and honours John Terry 's request to reduce the speed - only to go back to his methods when they began losing. The Italian arrived at the Blues in 2016, less than a year after they'd sacked Jose Mourinho. Conte rocked up with a reputation as a hard task master and he quickly got to work at their Cobham base following a dire season for the west Londoners. Terry was then the leading voice at the club and, after just a few weeks, went to his new coach and asked him to tone down training and reduce the amount of video they were watching. Conte, keen to keep the group onside, accepted the request as he adapted to a new culture. However, Chelsea's impressive start quickly turned and they were beaten at home by Liverpool and then at Arsenal in successive weeks. The heat came on and Conte quickly decided it was back to his way, which set them on a record winning run, as he confessed he would never again veer from his own beliefs. He told Corriere della Sera: "One time, the Chelsea captain came to me to ask to slow down the pace (of training), to do fewer video sessions. I agreed, mainly out of respect to their culture, their different way of approaching football. When you're in a different country, you have to be careful to not cause too much upset. "Well, we lost two games in a row and I risked being sacked. Since then, I always think that if I have to 'die' as a result of the choices that have been made, I have to do it my way, and not in the hands of others. This is the way. 'Trust the process' as they say in England. "And when I think back to how tough training was, I smile. Zidane and Del Piero trained much harder. Today, we do about a third of what we used to do. The work has to be linked to the results on the pitch. I've coached teams where after a little while, the players themselves began to identify dangerous situations. For me, that means that we've achieved the right result." After Conte went back to his own methods, which also meant a change in formation, Chelsea went on to record 14 successive victories. That was then a record-equalling run in the Premier League as their impressive form took them to the summit of the table. Ultimately it would set them up to claim the title in impressive fashion. After losing to Arsenal on September 24 then didn't lost again until the first week of January. Conte's Chelsea would win the Premier League with 30 wins from 38 games - another record at the time. Jackson already suspended domestically following his Premier League dismissal at Newcastle on May 11, lasted only four minutes against Flamengo on Friday. He was shown a straight red card for raking his studs down the shin of Ayrton Lucas — just moments after coming off the bench. The forward took to Instagram after the match to issue a grovelling apology. 'I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down,' he wrote. 'Another red card and honestly, I'm so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation. 'I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a football moment that went the wrong way. No excuses. I take full responsibility. 'I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.' Meanwhile, Maresca was asked why he dropped Jackson in favour of Delap. The Italian explained: 'Just because they are both very good and we decide game by game who is going to play. But also some new players like Chalobah are playing from the start. I think Liam also needs a little time to adapt to his team-mates, the way we want to play - the way we want him to play. 'But no doubt that he is going to do well.'
