Yildiz scores twice as Juventus ease past Wydad

Kenan Yildiz scored twice as Juventus seized control of Group G with a 4-1 win over Wydad Casablanca at the Club World Cup in Philadelphia on Sunday.
The Italian side, who opened their campaign by thumping Al Ain 5-0, are on the brink of last-16 qualification.
Yildiz had a hand in Juve's opener after six minutes when his shot was deflected in by Wydad defender Abdelmounaim Boutouil.
Wydad pressed forward and Samuel Obeng had a chance before Yildiz doubled Juve's advantage on 16 minutes in stunning fashion when he lashed into the top corner from the edge of the box.
The underdogs were far from done and a cool chip from Thembinkosi Lorch after 25 minutes led to wild celebrations from the Wydad fans, with smoke from their flares leading to a minor delay in proceedings.
Marshalled by the brilliant Nordin Amrabat, Wydad continued to push at the start of the second half, but the clinical Italians possessed the cutting edge and Andrea Cambiaso came closest when he struck an effort against the post.
Juventus effectively sealed their victory after 70 minutes when Randal Kolo Muani found Turkey international Yildiz, who rolled home his side's third, and there was still time for Dusan Vlahovic to add a fourth from the penalty spot in injury time.

Guardiola said that his side 'pushed and pushed to score another goal' but ended up missing one. City's star forward Rodri came off the bench as he continues his gradual return from an ACL injury. 'He cannot play more than 30 minutes,' the Spanish manager said of Rodri's return. 'He still struggles a bit in the duels, still needs to be a little bit stronger, but it's normal. 'It's important he played much, much better than the previous game. We miss him a lot. Any team would miss the best player in the world.' In Sunday's other results, Salzburg and Al Hilal played out a goalless draw in Group H after 10-man Real Madrid won 3-1 against Pachuca.

City's Stones reflects on ‘dark days' during recent injury setbacks
PA Media/dpa Atlanta, Georgia Manchester City's John Stones admits there were times he doubted if his career would resume amid a series of injury problems over the past two years. The England centre back made only six Premier League starts in the 2024-25 season after thigh, foot and other undisclosed issues. That came after he also missed two months at the start of the previous campaign with a hip injury. These setbacks have prevented the 31-year-old building on what was an outstanding season in 2022-23 when, playing a hybrid defence-midfield role, he helped City win the treble. Stones said: 'Yes, there have been points where you think: you've been giving all this effort, you dedicate all your life, especially how I approach or go about my life and football, I give everything on and off the pitch to be here or be ready to play games and ... those are the dark days. 'I think everyone's been through them and thinks, 'Why is this happening?' You wish it would go a different path. It's self-doubt, a lot of things. 'It is frustrating for me. I put a lot of pressure on myself. I find it very challenging mentally. 'I have had some very low points in the past season. I just have to (try to) come back but, once you come over those things, you can't really see the end of the tunnel when they keep happening.' Stones has now battled his way back to fitness and is hoping to play a big part in City's challenge at the Club World Cup in the United States. He has not featured since February when he was forced off after just eight minutes against Real Madrid. He was an unused substitute in their opening game of the tournament against Wydad Casablanca on Wednesday. Speaking to media ahead of their second game against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi in Atlanta, Stones said he was 'raring' to go. He said: 'I feel great, I'm back fit and ready to help the team when called upon. I'm excited to get going. 'Mentally it's been difficult dealing with the injuries and the process, but now I've put that behind me. 'I've been back in training a few weeks now and that's been going great. I'm super excited.' Manager Pep Guardiola is pleased to have Stones back in contention but will ease him back into action. Guardiola said: 'Him playing football, I want that. We have been together for almost one decade and he's an incredible human being. 'But the important thing now is at training sessions, he feels better. Games are another issue, another rhythm.'

Inter avoid embarrassment with late turnaround against Urawa RD
PA Media/dpa Los Angeles Inter Milan scored twice late on to beat Urawa Red Diamonds 2-1 in Seattle and spare their Club World Cup blushes. Ryoma Watanabe's early opener had allowed Urawa to dream of a famous victory, but Lautaro Martinez's brilliant overhead kick 12 minutes from time drew Inter level. Urawa were still in the competition at that point, but two minutes into stoppage time substitute Valentin Carboni proved the Inter hero. The ball took a couple of ricochets in the Urawa box, and Carboni kept his composure to sidefoot in his first Inter goal from eight metres. Urawa had to defend for long periods of a largely one-sided affair, but the Japanese side were so close to becoming the first Asian team to beat European opposition in 17 games in the various formats of this competition. Inter started strongly and went close to a second-minute opener as Nicola Zalewski produced a wonderful cross into the six-metre box. But Luis Henrique, making his first Inter start following his transfer from Marseille, was unable to apply a touch at the far post. The contest was one-way traffic with Urawa barely escaping from their own half until an 11th-minute sucker punch was delivered. Takuro Kaneko surged past Carlos Augusto down the right and squared for Watanabe to score with the aid of a deflection. Augusto almost made amends in forcing a save from Shusaku Nishikawa, and Martinez headed Kristjan Asllani's centre against the crossbar from six metres. It proved a costly miss despite Mkhitaryan slicing horribly wide from eight metres. Martinez displayed his scoring knack once more from Nicolo Barella's corner, before Carboni's calmness gave Cristian Chivu his first win as Inter manager.
