Al Pacino recalls turning down ‘Star Wars' role, reveals why he said no

Time of India09-06-2025

Academy Award winner Al Pacino recently opened up about turning down a role in Star Wars and explained why he was hesitant to join the now-iconic franchise.
'I said, 'I think I'm in the mood to make Harrison Ford a career,'' Pacino joked, recalling a visit to the San Francisco headquarters of American Zoetrope—the production company founded by Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas—according to Deadline.
'They were making this in the late '60s. They were real idealists coming into the '70s, with great films being made all over the world,' Pacino said. 'It was a wonderful place—I actually visited the building before I did The Godfather with them.'

As for why he passed on Star Wars, Pacino admitted the script didn't click with him.
'I loved their work, but I was doing a Broadway show at the time, and they handed me this script. I didn't understand it. I thought I must be out of space myself,' he said. 'So I sent it to my friend and mentor, Charlie Loughton. I asked, 'What do you make of this?' He was pretty wise and said, 'I don't get it, Al. I don't know.' And I said, 'Well, I don't either—what are we going to do?' They offered me a fortune, but I just couldn't do it. I can't play something if I don't speak the language.'

Pacino to Star in Hostage Thriller 'Dead Man's Wire'
Meanwhile, Pacino is set to headline the upcoming hostage thriller Dead Man's Wire, directed by Academy Award nominee Gus Van Sant.
According to Deadline, the film is based on the true story of a harrowing
1977 hostage situation
that gripped the world. The screenplay, written by Austin Kolodney, features a star-studded cast including Bill Skarsgård, Dacre Montgomery, Myha'la, Cary Elwes, and Colman Domingo.
The plot centers on events from February 8, 1977, when Anthony G. 'Tony' Kiritsis, a 44-year-old man, stormed into the office of Richard O. Hall, president of Meridian Mortgage Company, and took him hostage.
Wielding a sawed-off shotgun rigged to his own neck with a 'dead man's wire,' Tony demanded $5 million, immunity from prosecution, and a personal apology from the Hall family, whom he accused of cheating him out of money.
Van Sant—best known for Good Will Hunting and Milk—will bring the tense standoff to the screen in what will be his first collaboration with Pacino.
Pacino, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Scent of a Woman, was last seen in Knox Goes Away.

Oklahoma native, Thunder fan Kristin Chenoweth performs national anthem before Game 7 of NBA Finals

At 4-foot-11, Kristin Chenoweth always wanted to play basketball. It never happened, but she still made it to the NBA Finals. The award-winning actress, singer, Oklahoma native, Oklahoma Hall of Fame inductee and unabashed Thunder fan sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Game 7 of the title series between the Thunder and the Indiana Pacers on Sunday night. Chenoweth's performance aired live on ABC shortly before tipoff of the season's final game. — NBA (@NBA) She has performed on some of the biggest stages in the world - but doing the anthem for a Thunder game gives her butterflies. "Let me just say, if they had anxiety medication for Thunder fans, I'd be taking it," Chenoweth, dressed in a Thunder sweatshirt, told The Associated Press after her soundcheck at the arena on Sunday. Chenoweth's Thunder fandom has been no secret since the franchise's early years, though she also has professed at times to liking the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks as well. That said, the Thunder are clearly her top choice - so much so that she once told the Tulsa World she spent three hours bedazzling a Thunder hat. She went to Oklahoma City University after growing up in Broken Arrow, about 115 miles northeast of where the Thunder play. And her 8-year-old dog's name is Thunder. She even dressed the pup up once in a Thunder outfit. "I never miss a game unless I'm on stage," Chenoweth said. "I was a cheerleader in high school in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and I loved football, but my favorite was basketball. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo I like how much of a team player you've got to be. ... And this is my team." Chenoweth has sung the anthem at a few Thunder games in the past, sometimes alone and at least once with children from her Chenoweth Broadway Bootcamp. That camp is part of the arts and education fund that she founded to cultivate "young artistic expression by enriching children's lives through the power of education, entertainment and experience." "I've had some pretty big moments in my life in the entertainment field, but this one, I don't know why, makes me nervous," Chenoweth said. "I just am very honored that they asked. And I'm proud of these kids. I mean, we have come so far. Of course I want us to win. When the NFL has hired me for the anthem, you remain neutral. But the NBA didn't hire me for this, so I'm Thundering it up." And the anthem - which the soprano finished with her own flair - is a tough song to perform, she said. Singing the words written by Francis Scott Key about the defense of Fort McHenry is a duty she takes seriously. "Actually thinking about what he saw, it's really important for me to remember the words and talk about what they meant then and what they mean to us now," Chenoweth said. Chenoweth won a Tony Award in 1999 for best featured actress in a musical for her role in "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown." She received two Tony nominations for best leading actress in a musical, one in 2004 for playing Glinda in "Wicked" - she lost to co-star Idina Menzel - and the other in 2015 for playing 1930s Hollywood diva Lily Garland in "On the Twentieth Century." And in 2009, she won an Emmy for best supporting actress in a comedy series for her work on ABC's "Pushing Daisies." She returns to Broadway this fall, playing Jackie Siegel in "The Queen of Versailles." "I still have the desire," Chenoweth said. "I think really what inspires me lately is young talent. I'm seeing and watching and learning from them. Hopefully they're learning from me. And there's nothing better than watching a budding talent whether it's basketball or a singer, an artist, it's my jam. What keeps me going right now is other people inspiring me to do what I love."

BLACKPINK confirms comeback after 3 years, new song to premiere at DEADLINE World Tour on July 5; here's why fans are disappointed

After nearly three years without a full-group release, BLACKPINK is finally returning to the stage with a brand-new song debuting on July 5. YG Entertainment confirmed the news on June 23, revealing that Jennie, Rosé, Jisoo, and Lisa will perform their unreleased track during the first night of their DEADLINE World Tour at Goyang Sports Complex. For BLINKs around the world, the wait has felt endless, but this announcement finally signals the start of a new chapter. BLACKPINK to release new song during world tour. July 5 just doesn't mark the beginning of a new tour, but it's also a symbolic reunion between BLACKPINK and their fans. According to YG, the members chose to premiere the new song at Goyang to mark the beginning of this era and reconnect with their fandom. The concert will be the group's first major performance together since wrapping up their BORN PINK tour in 2023. With emotions running high and expectations even higher, July 5 is poised to be a milestone moment. BLACKPINK will unveil their comeback song for the first time at the 'DEADLINE' tour:— 'There were many discussions about how to release this new song. We decided to debut it first at the Goyang concert, which holds significance as the starting point of the DEADLINE tour, where… 'We decided to unveil it first at the Goyang concert, which marks the beginning of the world tour and a symbolic moment to reconnect with the fandom,' YG said in a statement, as per Korea JoongAng Daily. What we know about the new song (so far) While the title, concept, and full release details remain under wraps, YG has confirmed that BLACKPINK began filming the music video on June 6. According to media reports, it's being directed by a renowned global filmmaker, raising anticipation for a high-impact comeback. Insiders suggest that the group is aiming for an early July release, though whether it will be a standalone single or part of a larger project is still unclear. This marks BLACKPINK's first group release since Shut Down in September 2022, which was part of their Born Pink album. Since then, the members have focused on solo projects, acting gigs, and brand endorsements, leaving fans hungry for new music from all four together. The DEADLINE World Tour: massive in scale The Goyang concert will set the tone for what's being described as BLACKPINK's most ambitious tour to date. The DEADLINE tour spans 31 cities across three continents, with stops at global landmarks like SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles), Wembley Stadium (London), Stade de France (Paris), Tokyo Dome, and Citi Field (New York). The final show is scheduled for January 25, 2026, in Hong Kong, giving fans several months of electrifying performances to look forward to. Fans speak out: excitement, but also frustration While the comeback news has sparked joy, it also comes with a hint of frustration. Fans have been demanding updates for months, especially as other K-pop groups, including BTS members, have continued to stay active through solo music and public appearances. On social media, BLINKs have expressed concern over the lack of promotion for the comeback, calling out YG for its silence and sparse teaser content. this is such a terrible marketing strategy by YG, blackpink will have 0 fans after this era if they keep treating them like this so we waited all these years for new music just for us to get one song that won't even be on streaming for god knows how long so we can only listen thru fancams or buying a concert ticket YG needs to be serious for a min and use better and more cohesive marketing strategies bc atp idk what are they trying to do, it seems like they don't even care anymore 😭 i knew the blackpink comeback (or whatever you want to call it) was going to be shit from the butt but they somehow managed to make it worse LMFAO Some fans are also wondering whether this release will lead to a full album or just a digital single. Regardless, the desire for consistency and better communication from the label is clear. BLACKPINK's new era incoming With the music video already wrapped and the Goyang stage set for the grand debut, all signs hint at a new era for BLACKPINK, one shaped by Jennie, Rosé, Jisoo, and Lisa each rising as solo powerhouses. As they launch the DEADLINE World Tour with a fresh track, this comeback could mark a defining moment for the group's next chapter. Eega makers issue copyright infringement notice to Lovely team

The makers of SS Rajamouli's 2012 film Eega have sent a notice to the team behind the Malayalam film Lovely, which released this May, alleging 'unauthorised use of copyrighted character. ' Lovely, directed by Dileesh Nair and featuring Mathew Thomas , features a housefly, the design of which the Telugu filmmakers claim has been stolen from their film. Lovely features a housefly by the same name who befriends a youngster who has been wrongfully imprisoned. What the notice says? In the legal notice, Eega makers allege that the housefly design is their sole property and, "Our client (the production house) holds exclusive rights to all visual, artistic, and narrative elements of the film (Eega), including the said character. Any reproduction or imitation of this character, without our client's explicit consent, constitutes copyright infringement under said law." They claim, "The central character, a reincarnated housefly, was conceived and developed through advanced VFX methodologies including macro photography, anatomical modelling and behavioural studies of real flies. These visual effects were led by professionals including RC Kamalakannan and Pete Draper of Makuta VFX, establishing the housefly as a unique and recognisable creation owned solely by our client (the production house). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo " How can one say that we can't use anything in housefly category as a character? Dileesh Nair Speaking to us, Dileesh Nair said, "How can one say that we can't use anything in the housefly category as a character? We have all the properties related to the development of this character, including the mesh. Also, Eega was released in 2012. Why would we take an outdated model? There is a big difference in quality (of the visuals of the housefly). We will respond to the notice suitably. Stating that the character announcement for the housefly was made two years back, the director adds, "They are demanding royalty from our film's revenue, but it didn't do that well theatrically. Filing a suit this close to OTT release of the film seems like a planned move to us."
