Shankland's contract at Tynecastle is up and the Scotland cap is yet to decide what to do with his future, with reported interest from West Brom down south and from teams abroad.
According to the Daily Record, Derek McInnes is considering a shock move for former Hibs and Aberdeen star Kevin Nisbet.
The Scotland striker has returned to Millwall after his Dons loan spell came to a close.
It's claimed that McInnes has been a fan of Nisbet's for some time and wouldn't say no to trying to lure him back to Edinburgh.
McInnes said today that he's in constant discussion with Shankland and his agent over a new deal.
But the new Hearts boss insists time is running out and that he wants a resolution soon.
He told Sky Sports: "I'm in constant dialogue with Lawrence, spoke to his agents as well several times through the last few weeks but Lawrence has obviously got a lot to consider.
"We think we're a really strong option for him, whether we're the best option in Lawrence's eyes we've got to wait and see but there'll come a point really that we need to draw a line under it and Lawrence has got to look at looking after him and I've got to look after Hearts.
"Hopefully we can find a solution because he is a player that I think can really thrive with us at Hearts.
"He's shown in the time here how important he is and you try and not let players like that leave the door without putting up the best fight you can and we're in the fight for him.

"I believe we're a really strong option for Lawrence, I believe we're the best option for him at this moment, he's got the World Cup to try and get involved in at the end of next season.
'There are loads of reasons why Lawrence could see this as a good option for him.
"Hopefully as I say we're his best option and at the minute we're in the fight to keep him.
"I always feel deadlines are not always healthy and sometimes can be a bit antagonistic but there's been enough conversations with Lawrence.
"There'll come a point where he has to move on and try and secure his future and likewise I need to make sure that we secure our squad going forward but we're not at that stage yet.
"But sooner rather than later really to try and get that resolved because I want clarity in what I'm dealing with and I'm sure Lawrence is wanting clarity on his future as well."

England unhappy with Fifa plan to control where teams stay at World Cup
Thomas Tuchel and the Football Association will lobby Fifa to change new protocols for the World Cup next year that require countries to move to new base camps for each knockout round. England head coach Tuchel arrives in Florida next week to watch Manchester City play Juventus in Orlando at the Club World Cup on Thursday and also to visit potential base camps. Those include some in Kansas, the Midwest state that is the approximate geographical centre of the United States. The FA is keen to put the squad in a place where they can travel relatively quickly to stadium venues although much is unknown until the draw on December 5, qualifying permitting. In such a large country, base camp planning is very difficult ahead of the draw. Kansas is one option that connects to all World Cup venues in less than four hours. The reorganised World Cup plan from Fifa is that once teams emerge from the group stages, they move according to where the draw takes them – a complete departure from past tournaments. Up to now teams have been based in one place for as long as they stay in the tournament, allowing national associations to build a familiar hub with players' families accommodated close by and – ideally – develop a strong group dynamic. Fifa has trialled the movable base camp concept at the Club World Cup, currently under way in the US, although not every club has signed up to the idea. Manchester City booked their accommodation in Boca Raton, Florida, before the draw was made and will stay there for as long as they remain in the tournament – flying in and out of match venue cities. Fifa has asked that nations qualifying for the 48-team 2026 tournament pick venues from those supplied on its official list and then follow the route through the rounds set out by the governing body's organisers after that. There is hope that approach may change. The FA feels that would undermine the sense that the players get from a familiar 'home away from home' which was part of the tournament successes under Gareth Southgate. Whether it was in Qatar at the Souq Al Wakra hotel in Doha, or based at St George's Park for the Euros in 2021, the team benefitted from a base that was fitted out to suit their needs. The FA invests much in its base camps – including food, entertainment and pictures of the players' families in their rooms. It is the same for other European nations, with Germany building its 2014 success in Brazil around its base in Bahia. The US team have elected to stay on the west coast next summer and, as one of the three co-hosts have been able to select their group – Group D – with two games at the SoFi Stadium in California and one in Seattle. The west coast is regarded as more suitable for summer sport with cooler temperatures. With only one more of the 10 predominantly US groups based on the west coast next year, England's chances of playing there are slim. Co-hosts Mexico and Canada will be the top seeds in their groups in their home nations and therefore England are unlikely to be drawn in either of those groups. Some of the 10 groups not featuring Mexico or Canada do include games played in one of those two nations. With England likely to be among the top seeds for tournament, that opens up the possibility that they will play elsewhere, with the eastern seaboard very hot and humid in June and July. Conditions for elite football are demanding, as the Club World Cup has demonstrated. As well as other potential base camps around the US, the FA are looking at the three facilities in Kansas City. They include the one belonging to the MLS franchise Sporting Kansas City – the Pinnacle National Development Center which was built seven years ago, and is also used by the US national teams.

Rangers transfer rumour explodes in Croatia as centre-back worth 'serious money' on Ibrox radar
The Ibrox side are reportedly battling Vitoria Guimaraes to land Luka Jelenic and have already 'bit' Croatian centre-back Luka Jelenic is reportedly a target for Rangers and Vitoria Guimaraes. The Russell Martin rebuild has commenced at Ibrox with deals underway for the likes of Conor Coady, Max Aarons and Kwame Poku. But centre-back appears to have jumped to the top of the priority list amid questions over whether John Souttar will be fit for their Champions League opener with Panathinaikos next month. Coady would fit that bill but now, according to 24sata in Croatia, they are keen on Osijek defender Jelenic. The 25-year-old only joined his current club in an £800,000 deal last summer but it's claimed they already believe they can sell him for 'serious money.' It's reported that Rangers as well as Portuguese side Vitoria have 'bitten' and that the first formal offers could arrive 'very soon.' Jelenic made 40 appearances for his side last season and is widely viewed as one of the top defenders in the Croatian league. He comes from the same club Rangers signed Borna Barisic from in a £2m deal in 2018. It comes after new boss Martin today said he expects to have his new squad in place in time for the Champions League opener on July 22. He said: 'I think the squad will look different (by then). We will have some players in by then as well, so the earlier we can do that, the better, so they become ingrained in what we are trying to build culturally and in terms of performance. 'The players are back in on Monday. That's the most exciting bit. We will see what the players can do, how we are going to have to adapt and tweak to make it really built-in and ready for us, and then the rest will take care of itself.'
