Guy Gardner Returns In Lanterns Following Superman Debut, And I'm Digging What Nathan Fillion Said About How His Character Will Be Different In The DCU Show

As someone who's been a Green Lantern fan for over 15 years and was disappointed by how Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern movie turned out, I'm thrilled that this DC Comics property is getting another shot at live-action thanks to the DC Universe. First, we'll see the bowl cut-boasting Guy Gardner in action next month in James Gunn's Superman, and then we'll meet fellow Green Lantern Corps members Hal Jordan and John Stewart in Lanterns next year. It was announced at the end of March that Nathan Fillion will also reprise Guy in that upcoming DC TV show, and I'm digging what the actor had to say about how his Green Lantern character will differ there compared to how he's depicted in Superman.
Lanterns will mark Fillion's third time playing Guy, as he's appearing in Peacemaker Season 2 this August alongside fellow Justice Gang member Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and the team's benefactor, Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn). However, 2026 will be the first time we see this version of Guy interact with other Green Lanterns, and here's what the star of ABC's The Rookie said to EW about how that will look:
I think he feels a little bit higher strung in Lanterns. I've done a scene in Lanterns, we filmed it already, where he's contently smug. It's neat to see him in different environments and how those different environments will affect a character.

Like his comic book counterpart, Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner has a brash and arrogant personality that clashes with the more disciplined personalities of Hal Jordan and John Stewart, though the latter certainly isn't lacking in cockiness. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre are respectively playing these characters in Lanterns, which will follow them investigating a murder in the American heartland. It's unclear how Guy will get involved, but I'm guessing this will be his first time meeting John and one of his many interactions with Hal if they've both been in the Green Lantern Corps for a while.
Fillion also spent some time talking about Guy Gardner's overinflated ego, and how he's a prime example that just because you're a Green Lantern doesn't make you a role model. In the actor's words:
What is very true about Guy Gardner...is you don't have to be good and pure of heart to be a Green Lantern. You just have to be fearless. You just have to have the will. And Guy Gardner thinks he can take on Superman. That's how fearless he is. No, you can't take on Superman, dude.
I'm curious to learn how Guy Garner ends up factoring into Lanterns, as this story is about Hal and John, so he should only be there to support them rather than steal the show. That said, considering this Green Lantern TV show will also feature Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, I wouldn't mind whatsoever seeing Guy trash talk the Korugarian who was once a Green Lantern and now wields the yellow energy of fear. If there's one thing Guy knows how to do, it's annoy an adversary… and his allies too, actually.
Lanterns is expected to premiere on HBO sometime in early 2026, with episodes also being available to stream with a Max subscription. Watch Nathan Fillion bring Guy Gardner to life for the first time when Superman is released on July 11.

Released in 1996, the story features an older Superman returning to heroics after becoming disillusioned by a new generation of violent vigilantes. The use of this logo may signal a thematic connection to 'Kingdom Come' in the film, as trailers hint at Superman grappling with his place in a world of political agendas and corporate-backed heroes. 'Kingdom Come' appears in a 'Superman' tie-in box set releasing in August. Also included are Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's 'Superman for All Seasons,' Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's 'All-Star Superman,' and Alan Moore and Curt Swan's 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?' — three classic Superman adventures featuring the early and final days of the Man of Steel. 'Superman''s David Corenswet Recalls ‘Intense' Time He Screen-Tested for the Movie During Wife's Pregnancy (Exclusive)
David Corenswet tells PEOPLE that he and his wife had to keep two big secrets when they found out she was pregnant and he was cast as Superman "We had these two quite huge secrets that we just had between the two of us," he says Corenswet is PEOPLE's latest cover star as the new Superman movie is poised to take flight this summerFor Superman star David Corenswet, 2023 was a busy year: He learned he'd be a father and landed the part of the Man of Steel. In PEOPLE's new cover story, the Philadelphia native, 31, recalls going through the 'intense' time with wife Julia, 34. 'She told me that she was pregnant two days after I found out I was going to screen test for Superman,' says Corenswet. 'For the first several months of her pregnancy, as is sort of protocol, we weren't telling anybody. We had these two quite huge secrets that we just had between the two of us. And that was intense.' 'For a period we had just each other for these two huge things,' continues Corenswet, who says Julia's due date originally coincided with when he was set to start filming in early 2024. 'It was very close. It wasn't direct, but it was still very close. But it was just having to do two big unknown things at the same time. And they were both great things,' he says. The good-natured Corenswet found the lighter side of the situation. 'She gained about 40 pounds while she was pregnant and in the same period I gained about 40 pounds gaining weight for Superman,' he recalls. 'I started snoring and had to use her pregnancy pillow.' The actor says he was at his home, on a break from making the 2024 movie Twisters, when he got the call from Superman director James Gunn telling him he had been cast in the lead role. 'It started with, 'Hey David, it's James Gunn.' And I said, 'Can you prove that?' I guess in the moment before when I saw the unknown 310 number, I thought, 'I'm pretty sure this is James telling me whether or not I got the part, but it could be anybody from Los Angeles who has my number and maybe somebody's going to play a prank on me,' " Corenswet says of the phone call that changed his life. 'Anyway, I think he appreciated that and he said, 'That's a good point. I'm calling to offer you the role of Superman.' And I said, 'Well, you're the only person who could do that, so it must be you,'' Corenswet continues. Now he's hoping he did the role justice. 'I feel much more a sense of responsibility than a sense of accomplishment having done the role. I also know that so much in life and especially the life of an actor is up to chance and good luck, and certainly you get what you make of your situation,' he says. 'I just think of it as a great stroke of luck and I better do everything I can to earn the responsibility,' Corenswet continues. SUPERMAN Box Office Predictions Are Mixed But Hopeful and Ranges From $90 to $145 Million — GeekTyrant
James Gunn's Superman is flying straight into the pressure cooker of box office expectations. As the first major chapter of the new DC Cinematic Universe under Gunn's creative leadership, early projections paint a mixed, but hopeful, picture for the reboot's theatrical launch. According to tracking from the National Research Group (via The Hollywood Reporter), Superman is currently projected to open with $135 million domestically, with a tracking range between $125 million and $145 million. If those numbers hold, Gunn's take on the iconic hero would surpass Man of Steel's $116.6 million opening and land just below Batman v Superman 's $166 million debut. But not everyone is betting on a home run. Deadline reports that some insiders are bracing for a more conservative launch, estimating between $90 million and $125 million, pointing out that Captain America: Brave New World had a higher 'first choice' audience interest, 71% more than Superman, at the same point in its pre-release cycle. For context, that film opened with $88.8 million. In comparison, Superman 's 'first choice' score is reportedly 64% lower than The Batman, which debuted with $134 million in 2022. Still, early ticket sales are telling a more optimistic story. According to Deadline, Superman logged the biggest 24-hour advance ticket sales of the year, surpassing Fantastic Four: First Steps and benefitting from the July 8 Amazon Prime Early Access screenings. That early momentum could be a strong indicator of wider audience enthusiasm, especially among hardcore fans. Superman films have generated $2.56 billion globally across seven entries. Man of Steel made $670 million worldwide, and Batman v Superman pulled in $874.3 million. If Gunn's reboot hits that projected $135 million opening, it would surpass both The Batman and Suicide Squad to become the fourth-highest DC opener ever (not adjusted for inflation). As for what James Gunn thinks, in a recent interview, Gunn said: 'This is the first movie out of DC Studios… I'd be very happy with a double. I've gotta make my budget back. I'll be very happy with that.' Gunn is not swinging for a grand slam, just a solid start. And with numbers like these, Superman may be gearing up for exactly that.
