The dawn of a new Superman: Why the new movie will see fans fall in love with the DC Universe all over again
One of the most hotly anticipated films of the year is almost here, and the countdown to Superman has DC fans on the edge of their seats. With opening night just weeks away, excitement is reaching fever pitch as audiences prepare to witness the dawn of a new era in the DC Universe. All eyes are on writer-director James Gunn and new star David Corenswet, tasked with reintroducing the Man of Steel to cinemagoers, as Superman launches 'Gods and Monsters,' the first chapter in the rebooted DC Universe. The newly imagined superhero story by Gunn, who helmed Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, promises epic action as well as humour and heart. Fans got their first taste of the reboot at CinemaCon 2025, where early footage hinted at a Superman that feels both fresh and nostalgic. The trailers show that the films honours the legacy of the classic comics and beloved films of the Silver Age era of the 1950s through 1970s. Marking a shift from the darker tone of recent iterations led by Henry Cavill, this new take embraces a brighter aesthetic and a more hopeful, morally grounded hero: a Superman who's driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind. Starring in the dual role of Superman and Clark Kent, Corenswet made a name for himself in Ryan Murphy series The Politician, which he followed up with roles in Pearl, Hollywood and Twisters. Lois Lane is portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan, who starred in the much acclaimed series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel from 2017 to 2023. Mad Max and The Great actor Nicholas Hoult plays Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor. The storyline is being kept tightly under wraps by DC Studios, however the latest trailer reveals that Superman's initiative in stopping a war is attracting criticism from the public and the ire of the government, which views his actions as meddling in international affairs. We also know from previous comments by Gunn, that the film will explore Superman's struggle to 'reconcile his Kryptonian legacy with his human upbringing in Smallville, Kansas'. While a host of DC characters are set to appear— including Green Lantern, Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho and Supergirl— James Gunn has confirmed that this movie is no ensemble piece a la Justice League, and will centre on the key players Clark Kent/Superman, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. The cast of supporting characters includes Dora and the Lost City of Gold star Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, X Men: First Class actor Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific and Guardians of the Galaxy's Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern. This year marks a new dawn for the DC Universe under the stewardship of James Gunn and co-CEO of DC Studios Peter Safran, with Superman the first live action project to be unveiled. The universe's foundational blockbuster is expected to set the tone for upcoming spin-offs, sequels and ensemble projects as the DCU reestablishes itself in cinema with fresh takes on characters and storylines. Upcoming DC movies in the works include Batman film The Brave and the Bold, reported to be in early development. This Batman is separate from the current franchise starring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight. TV series Lanterns is currently filming and is expected to be released in 2026. Supergirl: World of Tomorrow, starring the Australian star of Sirens and House of the Dragon Milly Alcock, has wrapped filming and is slated for a 2026 release in cinemas. (Video) Local VFX Artist Sofian Teases 'Superman' Promo Collab With Actor David Corenswet
Whether you know him as Sofyank96 or by his real name, Sofian, the local visual effects (VFX) artist has certainly come a long way since his early days of content creation. With an impressive résumé that includes producing spectacular promotional videos for films and collaborations with Hollywood stars such as Paul Rudd and Tom Cruise, there's little doubt that the 28-year-old is well on his way to achieving his dream of making it big. It looks like he'll be adding another Hollywood collaboration to his portfolio. Earlier this week, the local content creator teased his followers that he was heading to the Philippines to work on a promotional video with a very 'super' actor, who is set to release his upcoming film later this year. 'I'll be flying to the Philippines to film a new collaboration with an actor from an upcoming superhero film! Any guesses who it is?' Sofian captioned a photo of himself at the airport on Instagram. With several titles announced this year, many speculated it could be either Marvel's 'Fantastic Four' or DC's 'Superman'. However, the answer was officially revealed yesterday (Thursday, 19th June). The Malaysian VFX artist posted a Reel on his Instagram, showing him walking down a street in formal attire while reading a newspaper. Suddenly, beams of light, possibly missiles, appeared in the sky, with one striking a section of the building directly above him and several civilians. Sofian sprang into action, shielding the bystanders from the falling debris with his body before flying off, as the camera panned to reveal the iconic 'S' symbol in the sky. If that wasn't obvious enough, the influencer confirmed the exciting news in his caption, writing: 'I had the opportunity to join the 'Superman' movie junket in the Philippines. Soon, I'll be filming content with Superman himself, David Corenswet. Pray that everything goes smoothly.' As expected, Malaysians expressed their excitement over Sofian's achievement, praising him for representing the country on an international stage. Some even joked that the content creator collaborating with Hollywood stars is akin to Thanos collecting the Infinity Stones in 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Avengers: Endgame.' Others quipped that it was Superman who was lucky to be meeting Sofian, joking that the iconic 'S' symbol actually stands for the first letter of the Malaysian star's name. Terrance 'T.A.' Dixon, a name not widely known outside music circles until recently, has come into the spotlight after filing a bombshell lawsuit against Bronx-born rapper Fat Joe. Dixon was Fat Joe's hype man for 16 years, amping up crowds, working closely on tours, and sharing in the energy of live performances. He, also known in the music world as Population One, is better known among electronic music fans for his minimal techno beats. Based in Detroit, Dixon has carved a niche for himself in the underground techno scene, with releases on iconic labels like Tresor and Metroplex. Among the most serious claims are 'coercive labour exploitation, financial fraud, sexual manipulation, violent intimidation, and psychological coercion.' Dixon is seeking up to $20 million in damages. The lawsuit details years of alleged abuse, including sexual coercion under duress, surveillance-based humiliation, and forced participation in acts Dixon says he never consented to. 'These sex-based abuses were not private, incidental, or isolated,' the complaint alleges. It also claims Fat Joe used his influence to silence and control those around him. Even more shocking are Dixon's allegations that he witnessed Fat Joe engage in sexual acts with underage girls. The lawsuit names three alleged minors and includes graphic descriptions. 'The allegations against Mr. Cartagena are complete fabrications — lies intended to damage his reputation and force a settlement through public pressure,' said his lawyer, Joe Tacopina, per Variety. 'Mr. Cartagena will not be intimidated.' Dixon's lawyer, Tyrone Blackburn, who has a history of filing lawsuits against celebrities, told The Independent, 'Fat Joe is Sean Combs minus the Tusi.' Blackburn added, 'He learned nothing from his 2013 federal conviction.' 'We didn't just sue a disgruntled former employee trying to revive a false claim from 15 years ago — we sued the lawyer behind it all,' said Tacopina, adding that Blackburn is under scrutiny for unethical legal conduct. ‘Superman' Director James Gunn Admits ‘Funky' CG Shot ‘Kind of Got by Me,' Pulled It From the Movie
If you thought a preview shot of the Man of Steel flying in the teaser trailer for the upcoming 'Superman' film looked bad, worry not — James Gunn did too. The 'Superman' writer, director and DC Studios co-CEO shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly published Thursday that an unfinished shot of Kal-El flying through an arctic landscape 'kind of got by' him in an early teaser. In fact, the shot bothered him so much, it will not appear in the final cut of the film. The shot in question, featured at the end of a 30-second teaser released Jan. 26, follows Superman from behind as he soars through the arctic — likely, either coming or going from his Fortress of Solitude. When Superman approaches a rocky structure, the camera switches angles to cover his face as he does a barrel roll. What follows is a shot of Superman flying straight at the camera — with actor David Corenswet's visage looking strangely static and warped. 'The part of him flying, it was a photograph of his face and him flying. It was a photograph of a drone flying in front of an actual background,' Gunn said. 'So all the pieces were real, but it was incorporated in kind of a funky way.' You can see for yourself in the teaser below. Gunn owned up to the mistake, saying he didn't look as closely at the TV spot as he would a full trailer. The shot faced broad criticism at the time of its release; however, it appears that, even then, Superman's flight had plenty of defenders. Gunn spoke to the difficulty of depicting a hero with such 'simplicity and elegance' as Superman. Gunn has directed flying superheroes before, including Star-Lord and Adam Warlock in his 'Guardians of the Galaxy' trilogy. However, he has never depicted flight on a character as graceful as the Man of Steel. Though Gunn removed this shot from 'Superman,' fans will have to wait until July 11 to see how the director handles the character's flight overall. Anne Burrell's TV co-star reveals their heartbreaking final conversation
Anne Burrell's Food Network co-star Melba Wilson has spoken out about her death, legacy, and their last conversation which came just a week before her death. Burrell, best known for hosting the Worst Cooks in America show and the Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, was found unconscious in her New York home's shower early on Tuesday morning by her husband Stuart Claxton, it is reported. She was later pronounced dead when the emergency services arrived. Her cause of death has not been confirmed, but according to the US outlet and the Daily Mail a rep from the NYC Fire Department said the incident was reported to them as a cardiac arrest. While Burrell has been remembered as a 'beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend' in a heartbreaking statement from her family, her industry friends are also mourning. 'This is a tough time for so many of us that knew Anne and that loved her. It was totally unexpected. So to hear yesterday that she's no longer with us is devastating,' New York City restauranteur Melba told TMZ. Opening up about her last conversation with Burrell, which came a week before her death, Melba explained: 'It was fine. We talked about karaoke. We loved karaoke. Anne loved games, she loved backgammon. We always went out to dinner, and did karaoke.' She continued: 'It's just shocking. It's unbelievable to know that someone so vibrant and full of life is no longer with us. '[Burrell] was at my birthday party a month and a half ago dancing; she loved to dance. Any type of music. Her and her husband Stuart were there and had an amazing time.' Asked whether Burrell has mentioned being sick to Melba, the Food Network star explained that she 'never mentioned anything' about that, which is why her death was 'such a shock'. Melba also described Burrell as being able to light up any room, and said her legacy was laughter. 'Her legacy is laughter. Anne always laughed. She always wanted to teach. She's a fierce competitor,' Melba shared. 'The food industry is full of men, and Anne would go toe-to-toe with the best of them. She always wanted to win. She was always very loving, very giving.' Burrell's family shared a statement announcing her death. 'Anne's light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world,' they said.
