Corporate cafeterias' menus undergo a healthy makeover

A health revolution is silently sweeping India Inc cafeterias as employees become more health conscious spurred by a rising trend of early lifestyle-related diseases. Protein-rich meals, diabetic-friendly/low-GI food, vegan or gluten-free alternatives, homestyle food with less oil and spices, and even 'recovery-focused plates' for fitness buffs are gaining currency.
Companies such as Capgemini, Hindustan Unilever, Larsen & Toubro, Accenture, Razorpay, and Myntra say they have initiated steps to promote healthy eating, food literacy, and conscious choices at their workplaces, viewing meals as a strategic input to drive energy, mood, and performance.
Corporates are opting for meals with less processed sugar and saturated fat, better hydration options, and those that are nutrient-dense and energising. Some are even setting up employee wellness counters, say food service providers like Compass Group and Rassense. 'There's been a significant rise in clients prioritising healthier food choices. Over 40% of our clients have requested health-centric menu transformations,' said chef Arjyo Banerjee, chief culinary officer at Compass Group India. 'These are built on the belief that small nutritional changes at work can boost employee productivity, improve energy levels, and reduce absenteeism.'Compass Group introduced healthier grain swaps like millets and brown rice; fermented items like kombucha and raita to aid gut health; functional foods such as lemon-infused buttermilk and sprouts, and wellness-led counters.

Desserts are whipped up with jaggery, dates, and fruits, while favourites like biryanis, dosas, and pulao are reimagined with millets and quinoa. Technology, banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI), Global Capability Centres (GCCs), pharmaceuticals, education and consulting — featuring younger, more healthconscious workforces, and largely sedentary job roles — are leading the change.
So, one can find calorie information on the food ordering app at Capgemini — it also hosts mindful eating sessions. At Razorpay, Manipal Hospitals' nutritionists and dieticians curate weekly food plans; HUL offers calorielabelled, portion-controlled dishes and personalised dietary counselling. Accenture's Purple Corridors programme promotes wellbeing as a collective responsibility at a team level, while even legacy companies like L&T opened diet-food counters at key office locations.Rising health-related concerns among employees are fuelling the shift. At L&T, annual health checkup data revealed a spike in lifestyle-related conditions such as high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes. To counter this, the engineering and construction conglomerate adopted a holistic, preventive healthcare approach — with nutritious food access playing a critical role, said Dr Divyang Shah, headmedical services & community health centres at L&T.In recent months, cafeteria menus have been enhanced to offer balanced meals prepared with minimal oil — with guidance from internal and external nutrition experts. HUL, through its 'Healthier U' programme, developed in collaboration with the Workforce Nutrition Alliance, rolled out several initiatives to promote balanced eating. These include reducing salt, sugar, and oil intake, and adding local nutrient-dense superfoods. 'Our food courts carry visual nutrition guides and educational signage to encourage informed food choices,' said a HUL spokesperson. These efforts are enhancing employee physical health, evidenced by reported improvements in blood sugar levels, weight management, and hypertension control, according to HUL.'We believe that employee well-being begins with everyday choices—starting with what's on our plates,' noted Vijay Chandramohan, head of corporate real estate services (CRES)-India and APAC at Capgemini. 'By introducing calorie labelling, expanding healthy food options, and offering expert-led sessions on mindful eating, we're empowering people to make informed decisions. This reflects our commitment to a workplace culture rooted in health, awareness, and long-term well-being.'
Across companies, employee feedback is playing a key role in shaping food offerings. Razorpay, for instance, has a dedicated food feedback channel on messaging company Slack where employees share suggestions and preferences. These are reviewed by teams and shared with food vendors for implementation wherever feasible.'Several enhancements to our menu have come from employee feedback. For instance, the introduction of healthier evening snacks and add-ons like salads and beans resulted from suggestions raised during town halls and focus group discussions,' said Chitbhanu Nagri, senior vice-president -people operations, Razorpay.At online fashion and lifestyle retailer Myntra, the cafeteria offers varied healthy options — from detox water and fresh juices like tulsi-lime and kokum, to salads and seasonal fruits — and continues to evolve based on employee preferences, said Govindraj MK, CHRO.

Inculcating Healthy Habits Deloitte runs the FitCheck initiative, which mandates annual health assessments for all employees and their spouses or partners. 'We share timely prompts and nudges via emails, leadership messages, and inspiring stories,' said its chief happiness officer, Saraswathi Kasturirangan. This is tracked on the performance management dashboard for year-end reviews. Accenture is running an initiative called 'Prana Pod' led by certified yoga instructors for sessions on mindful movement and breathing. It is also conducting expert-led workshops on fitness activities like Yoga, Tai Chi, and Zumba. Intuit also offers a 'Well-being for Life Programme' where one can reimburse up to ?60,000 per year for physical, emotional, and financial well-being expenses. Myntra offers wellness activities, including Yoga, Zumba, guided meditation, and mental wellness workshops to employees. It recently inaugurated pickleball courts at its office and inaugurated 'Dhyan Kaksha', a meditation space. The ecommerce platform also arranged regular health check-ups, like quarterly ECG screenings, and awareness initiatives, such as World Heart Day sessions with expert cardiologists, said its CHRO, Govindraj MK. Tata Group's Titan Company conducts comprehensive health data analysis at its manufacturing facility. Each Titan employee has a Health Score based on 18 critical parameters. 'This allows us to track and monitor health trends over time,' said its head—human resources, Priya Mathilakath Pillai. Titan also conducts fitness challenges for employees, like the 21-Day Kummiaatam Dance Challenge (Manufacturing Unit) where women participants underwent a health assessment following which they practiced for two hours each day after work hours. 'An incredible 64% of participants reported significant health benefits by the end of the challenge,' according to Pillai. WTW Wellbeing Diagnostic Survey India findings of 2024 point out that 76% companies plan to connect wellbeing to their human capital strategy. According to Vinod VK, head of health and benefits India, WTW, there is a growing trend of strategic initiatives implemented by Indian employers.

Cognizant wins $1 billion deal from US-based healthcare company

Bengaluru: Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. recently bagged a big-ticket deal from a US-based healthcare company, at a time when clients are renegotiating their engagements with information technology (IT) service providers due to artificial intelligence (AI) tools and macroeconomic uncertainty. In the early hours of Tuesday, Surya Gummadi, Cognizant's president for the Americas region, said the company had won a mega deal worth 'approximately a billion dollars" during a fireside chat with Jason Kupferberg, a senior analyst with Bank of America Merrill Lynch. To be sure, Gummadi did not announce the client's name. Mint has learnt from people with knowledge of the matter, including at least two analysts, that Cognizant might have renewed its partnership with UnitedHealth Group (UHG). 'This (deal) has an element of renewal, an element of expansion and a new (component) as well. It has all three components," said Gummadi, adding that the deal was a transformation deal with an average span of five years. The Cognizant veteran said the deal also has an AI component, where the IT services company is passing productivity gains to the client. Cognizant has had a two-decade partnership with UnitedHealth. The health sciences vertical made up almost a third of its full-year revenue of $19.74 billion at the end of 2024 and is its biggest vertical. Cognizant, based in Teaneck, New Jersey, is an Indian-heritage IT firm, as more than three-fourths of its employees are based in India. UHG is among the largest healthcare companies in the US, providing healthcare plans to people. The company ended 2024 with $400 billion in revenue, almost 20 times the size of Cognizant. Close ties Notably, one of UnitedHealth's subsidiaries was hit by a ransomware attack last year that impacted more than 100,000 people. The company had to pay out $22 million to hackers to protect valuable patient data, said chief executive officer (CEO) Andrew Witty. Incidentally, Cognizant CEO S. Ravi Kumar and UnitedHealth chief digital and technology officer Sandeep Dadlani were former colleagues at Infosys Ltd. Kumar took over as Cognizant CEO in January 2023, whereas Dadlani joined as UnitedHealth's chief digital and technology officer in September 2022. Both worked together at Infosys between 2002 and 2017. Kumar and Dadlani both served as the Bengaluru-based company's presidents. At least one analyst said the win was a step in the right direction. 'It's a sign of strong forward momentum for the firm," said Phil Fersht, CEO of HFS Research. Acquisitions made up almost half of its full-year revenue growth of 8.2% in constant currency terms. For Cognizant, this is the second mega deal that the company signed in the last two months. Gummadi, in his chat with Bank of America, said the company had announced another deal fetching upwards of $500 million two weeks back. This is an unnamed client in the company's communication, media and telecommunications division, which makes up about 16.6% of the company's revenue. Gummadi said Cognizant is saving money for clients by using AI tools, and this is being shared with those clients, who are in turn putting these savings and some of their own investments into new IT-related work, which is helping create more volume of business for Cognizant. Cognizant declined to comment while an email sent to UHG went unanswered. Scarce deals 'And by the way, both the mega deals that I spoke about, they were originated by us. They did not come from an RFP (request for proposal). They (the mega deals) originated from a solution with this construct," he said. Cognizant's recent deal win comes amid a drought for the country's largest IT outsourcers, which have struggled to bag such large deals. Coforge Ltd was the only listed Indian IT outsourcer to win a deal greater than $1 billion in total contract value over the last year. Mumbai-based Tata Consultancy Services Ltd was the last of the country's top five software service providers to land a mega deal. Last year, it signed a 15-year deal worth $2.5 billion with Aviva, a British insurance company.
