Piastri bounces back in second practice at Spanish GP

Gulf Today31-05-2025

Series leader Oscar Piastri bounced back after being outpaced in opening practice to top the times for McLaren ahead of Mercedes' George Russell in Friday's second session at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Piastri clocked a best lap of 1 minute 12.760 seconds to beat Russell by 0.286s after winding up fifth in FP1 when title rival and McLaren team-mate Lando Norris, who trails him by three points in the title race, was fastest.
Four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull was third, three-tenths adrift, ahead of Norris, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli in the second Mercedes.
Local hero two-time champion Fernando Alonso was seventh for Aston Martin ahead of Alpine's Pierre Gasly and RB's rookies Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson.

Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton struggled with his Ferrari to 11th, after taking third place earlier.
Neither session offered evidence of any changes in performance, following the introduction of a new rule restricting front wing flexibility.
On a hot afternoon at the Circuit de Catalunya, Leclerc was first out on mediums, hoping to maintain Ferrari's improvement in Monaco, but instead found it difficult to stay with the pace-setting McLarens.
Mercedes had clearly improved their set-up since a poor showing in FP1 with Russell first and Antonelli fifth after 20 minutes.
By contrast, Leclerc was down in eighth and Hamilton 11th having been fourth and third in the earlier session.

Hamilton's largely disappointing form since joining Ferrari was a hot topic again prompted by his former Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, the 2016 champion, who suggested, on SkyF1, that his age was a factor.
'Even if he's the greatest of all time, at some point you are going to get a little bit slower and that's age related,' said Rosberg.
'And when you are 40, it's going to happen sooner rather than later.
'Even a tenth makes a huge difference in this sport especially if you are up against some of the greatest from the new generation - namely Charles Leclerc, who is one of the absolute best qualifiers.'
Hamilton, adrift in 11th, complained his Ferrari was 'not driveable' before the high-fuel runs ended a session of few surprises or incidents.

Real Madrid's Mbappe discharged from hospital, club says

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has been discharged from the hospital after suffering from gastroenteritis during the Club World Cup, the Spanish club said on Thursday. "Mbappe will continue with specific medical treatment and will gradually return to team activity," the club said in a statement. Earlier on Thursday, the Spanish club announced that Mbappe was admitted to hospital in order to "undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment" after suffering from an "acute case of gastroenteritis". Frenchman Mbappe missed Real's opening game at the Club World Cup against Al-Hilal, which ended in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday. A club source told Reuters that Mbappe had been isolated from his teammates since Tuesday before being taken to hospital on Wednesday and is not expected to play in any of the group stage matches of the tournament. Coach Xabi Alonso hinted on Wednesday that Mbappe was doubtful for Real's next game, against Mexican side Pachuca on Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Lewis Hamilton is launching an F1 Soho House pop-up at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Abu Dhabi's F1 weekend is a highlight of the city's social calendar – but this year, it's getting a major upgrade. Enter House 44, a brand-new pop-up experience by Soho House, created in partnership with none other than Lewis Hamilton and hosted inside the prestigious F1 Paddock Club. After debuting earlier this year at the Miami Grand Prix, House 44 is now making its way around six international race locations, with its grand finale landing in Yas Marina Circuit from December 5 to 7, just in time for the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2025. So, what's House 44? Imagine a private Soho House, dropped right into the middle of the most exclusive part of a Formula 1 race weekend. It's a luxury suite dressed in signature Soho House style, with unbeatable track views, world-class hospitality, DJ sets, curated art and a mixed drink list that includes a special non-alcoholic serve made with Hamilton's own Almave blue agave drink. It's also a place where F1's elite – including Hamilton himself – just might pop in for a drink and a chat. The name House 44 is a nod to Hamilton's racing number – a number he's had since his karting days and one that's come to represent one of the most decorated careers in motorsport history. As a longtime Soho House member, Hamilton's fingerprints are all over the suite, from the design and drinks menu to the curated showcase of memorabilia and Plus 44 fashion pieces from both current and archive collections. But House 44 isn't just a viewing lounge. Guests will also be able to sign up for behind-the-scenes access experiences across the weekend, including pit lane walks, guided tours of the Paddock and even open-top track rides with expert commentary. There's also the chance to watch the post-race podium celebrations from up close – one of the most coveted spots at any Grand Prix. Expect a high-energy off-track atmosphere too, with live DJs, acoustic sets, a bespoke food menu blending local flavours with global inspiration and a specially curated art collection by Hamilton himself. Think of it as a race-weekend house party, with a touch more horsepower. Hospitality packages for House 44 Abu Dhabi start from Dhs45,577 and include three-day suite access, trackside experiences (subject to availability), full food and drinks and access to all the House 44 exclusives. Experiences like the pit lane walk and Paddock tours are available to book at reception on arrival and are first-come, first-served – so don't sleep on it. In addition to Abu Dhabi, House 44 is popping up at Silverstone, Zandvoort, Monza, Mexico City and Las Vegas – but this is your last chance to catch it for the 2025 season. Draper revs up for Wimbledon with tough win over Popyrin at Queen's

Briton Jack Draper once viewed himself as a Ferrari with reliability issues but the world number six said on Wednesday his hard work away from the court has given him the engine to cope with the physical demands of the Grand Slams. Draper ramped up his Wimbledon preparations by shrugging off illness and battling from a set down at the Queen's Club Championships to beat Australia's Alexei Popyrin 3-6 6-2 7-6(5) and set up a quarter-final against American Brandon Nakashima. The 23-year-old is seen as his country's big hope at the Grand Slams following the retirement of three-time major winner Andy Murray last year, and he is enjoying his best season on tour after winning an ATP 1000 title at Indian Wells in March. "I've always worked really hard off the court," said Draper, who also reached last year's US Open semi-finals. "That's helped me play more consistently on the tour. I've felt better and better every Grand Slam I have played. "Before, I felt my energy wasn't that strong and I felt I looked like a bit of a Ferrari but I was a bit of a Toyota, like broke down quite easy," he joked. "Now I'm starting to feel generally stronger and confident in myself." Draper's run in the London tune-up event means that he will be seeded fourth at Wimbledon, which begins on June 30. "My goal is to peak at Wimbledon," he added. "I've been hitting the ball better and better in practice, but sometimes that doesn't necessarily adjust to the match court straightaway. "The tennis I know I can play and the tennis that's got me to the position I'm in, there is still a lot of improvement to come."
