Director Basil Joseph dismisses rumours of Allu Arjun replacing Ranveer Singh as Shaktimaan in film reboot: ‘Whoever is spreading these…'

For late millennials and early Gen Zers, the Hindi superhero television series Shaktimaan is not just a fond memory but a defining part of their childhood. So, when reports emerged that a film adaptation of Shaktimaan was in the works, the child in every now-adult fan was ecstatic. However, since then, the project has mostly made headlines for the wrong reasons, particularly due to heavy-handed statements from the TV show's creator Mukesh Khanna. Although rumours have been rife that Minnal Murali director and Malayalam actor Basil Joseph would helm the project, with Bollywood star Ranveer Singh in the titular role, Mukesh Khanna has firmly denied the latter part time and again, stating that Ranveer 'doesn't have the correct face' for the character. Recently, another rumour surfaced suggesting that Telugu superstar Allu Arjun had replaced Ranveer Singh in the upcoming film reboot. Interestingly, Mukesh had once acknowledged that Arjun 'has it in him to be Shaktimaan'. While Arjun's fans were thrilled by the speculation, Basil Joseph has categorically denied the reports, reiterating that Ranveer Singh remains the only choice for the character. 'Shaktimaan will be made only with Ranveer Singh,' senior film journalist Subhash K Jha quoted Basil as saying. A source close to the project echoed this sentiment and told Jha, 'No one else is doing Shaktimaan. It is Ranveer Singh and no one else. Whoever is spreading rumours of his replacement clearly has their own agenda.' Now, it needs to be seen what Mukesh Khanna's response to this would be, particularly since he has repeatedly asserted that Ranveer Singh is not suited for the role. 'People know that Ranveer Singh came to convince me for allowing him to reprise the role of Shaktiman. I can't hide it also because later people said that I lauded Ranveer and called him a terrific actor. News of Ranveer being confirmed to play Shaktiman started coming but I hadn't agreed to it. I also have a conflict with Sony and I had put up a video clarifying that I haven't approved Ranveer to play the role and the reason is that…Ranveer sat in front of me that day for 3 hours but ultimately I had to tell him that what needs to be seen on his face wasn't there. He looks playful, like someone who would trick others,' he told Bollywood Thikana in September last year. However, his repeated comments sparked controversy, prompting Mukesh to clarify that he meant no disrespect towards Ranveer. At a press conference, when asked whether he made Ranveer wait at his office for hours, the Shaktimaan actor responded, 'No. I didn't force him to wait. He sat for three hours because he wanted to. He came to my office, we enjoyed each other's company. He's a terrific actor, he has terrific energy. But I decide who plays Shaktimaan. Producers cast actors, an actor can't cast a producer. You come to my office and say that you want to be Shaktimaan, it's not allowed!' Also, let me go out on a limb and say that he has it in him to be Shaktimaan. I am not saying he is doing it or anything. I'm just suggesting that it would look good on him. He has the personality to pull it off.'

Madhubala Biopic Put On Hold As Makers Rework Financial Plan

Last Updated: The biopic on screen icon Madhubala, directed by Jasmeet K Reen, is on hold as producers Sony, Brewing Thoughts, and Madhubala Pictures reassess the budget. A long-gestating biopic on iconic Bollywood legend Madhubala is back in the spotlight. Although the script is ready and director Jasmeet K Reen (best known for Darlings, 2022) is all set to helm the film, production has come to a standstill due to budget concerns. Once planned as a grand period drama with an estimated cost of Rs 80 to Rs 100 crore, the makers, Sony, Brewing Thoughts, and Madhubala Pictures, are now reworking the numbers to make the project financially sustainable. 'The period detailing, elaborate costumes, and set designs had ballooned the budget to a point where the recovery math didn't add up," a source close to the film shared to Mid-Day. 'The team is now actively working to find a middle path that does justice to Madhubala's grandeur without compromising the project's sustainability," added the source. The film has been in development for years, but things only picked up serious traction once Reen, known for her sensitive portrayal of complex women, came on board. 'The script is a beautiful tribute, which is emotional and rich in detail. No one wants a project that bleeds money. So, the budget has been slashed to half," added the insider. For now, conversations with top female actors have been put on hold until the revised financial plan is finalised. Still, hopes remain high. 'The film deserves to be made. The hope is to take the project on floors by the second quarter of this year," the source said. Lovingly known as the 'Venus of Indian Cinema,' Madhubala won hearts with her beauty, talent, and charm on screen. The upcoming film will tell her life story, highlighting her incredible acting, the mark she left on Indian cinema, and the many struggles she faced as a woman in the film industry during her time. The biopic is being backed by Sony Pictures International Productions along with Brewing Thoughts Pvt. Ltd., headed by Prashant Singh and Madhurya Vinay — the same team currently working on India's biggest superhero trilogy, Shaktimaan. Madhubala's sister, Madhur Brij Bhushan, and Arvind Kumar Malviya of Madhubala Ventures are also on board as co-producers for the project. Earlier speaking to ANI, Madhubala's sister Madhur Bhushan revealed that making a biopic of her loved sister is her 'long-standing dream". She further revealed that while the late actress had a short-lived life but her life is worth every moment. She told the news agency, 'All my sisters and I have joined hands to make this dream come true. With God's blessings and the dedication of my partners – Arvindji, Prashant and Vinay, I am confident that this biopic will be made successfully on a grand level. We need everyone's blessings to put together this project beautifully." First Published:

Spider-Man vs. antihero Punisher? Marvel's newest crossover might be its most intense yet; everything to know

No matter how much superhero fatigue is out there, Spider-Man always seems to swing above the noise. Tom Holland's take on the web-slinger remains a fan favourite, and now with Spider-Man: Brand New Day officially on the horizon, Marvel and Sony have dropped a major update. There's a new villain in town, and he's a familiar face. Spider-Man and the Punisher Enter: Jon Bernthal. Best known for playing Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, Bernthal has officially joined the upcoming Spider-Man movie, which begins shooting in England this summer and is set to release on July 31, 2026. Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is directing, and the film will see the return of Zendaya as MJ as well as Jacob Batalon as Ned. Also joining the mix is Stranger Things breakout Sadie Sink. Having Bernthal's Punisher in the mix immediately hints at a grittier tone for the film. Known for his brutal, no-nonsense vigilante justice — fists, knives, and guns over gadgets and spells — the Punisher brings a raw intensity that could challenge Peter Parker in ways we haven't seen on screen before. As one fan said on X, 'There is so much they could do with this! Love to see a fight with Frank combating Peter's superhuman abilities with his tactical knowledge and planning.' Bernthal's Frank Castle first appeared in Netflix's Daredevil before headlining his own two-season series. He recently reprised the role in Daredevil: Born Again, and this new casting puts him squarely back in the MCU spotlight. The internet, of course, has lost it. 'I literally screamed. Best news I've heard in a while,' one fan wrote. Another added, 'Can't believe we're finally going to see the Punisher on screen alongside Spider-Man. It's been a long time coming.' So far, Brand New Day is shaping up to be anything but business as usual. The two stars will also be seen together in Christopher Nolan's upcoming movie adaptation of The Odyssey, which is due to release in July, 2026.
