Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Was the Most Unexpected Reveal of State of Play

Sony held its regular State of Play event on Wednesday, showing some of the new games coming to its PlayStation. The biggest surprise was a new Marvel fighting game, and no, this isn't coming from Capcom. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is a new tag fighting game coming to the PS5, developed by Arc System Works, a studio known for its excellent contributions to the genre. This new title will feature only Marvel characters and will be a four vs. four tag battle. The Marvel characters shown in the video include Captain America, Iron Man, Dr. Doom, Spider-Man, Storm, Star-Lord, Ms. Marvel and Ghost Rider. Each character has a distinct 2D anime-inflected visual style that Arc System Works is known for. Characters will have their own super moves, and it appears there is another mechanic that allows for parrying or avoiding attacks. Arc System Works is best known for its fighting game franchises BlazBlue and Guilty Gear, as well as 2018's Dragon Ball FighterZ. They're considered some of the best 2D fighting games around, and are regularly selected as one of the premier games at the Evo Championship esports series, which is coming up in August. The last official Marvel vs. Capcom game was back in 2017 with Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. It didn't go over well with the fans, and the franchise seemed to have been forgotten until the release of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics last year. That collection breathed new life into the fanbase. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls will be released in 2026 for the PS5 and PC.

Marvel Tokon: Is It Game Over for Marvel vs. Capcom?

Marvel Rivals had been a huge win for Marvel Games, and ever since the release of the collection, fans have been hoping for a reveal of the next Marvel vs. Capcom game. As it turns out, we're getting a Marvel-themed fighting game in the same vein as MvC , but it will be a completely new series. Check out Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls : For context Arc System Works is behind fighting game titles like Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ. By the looks of it, they've given the Marvel heroes of Tokon their own special anime spin, and we have fresh looks for characters like Captain America, Iron Man, and even Ms. Marvel. We don't know who else could be coming to the roster, but characters spotted in the background include Thor and Daredevil. The way previous Arc System games have also worked, it's possible that they could be releasing characters regularly in the form of DLC. A lot of fans have been wondering why Marvel vs. Capcom hasn't made any announcements despite the fan demand, but some speculate that it has something to do with Capcom not being pleased with the results of their latest MvC title Infinite which came out back in 2017. "it looks like Marvel Vs. Capcom 4, but due to international copyright laws, it's not." — Meester (@GoofTesticles) June 4, 2025 While some fans think that there's a chance for MvC in the future, it does look like Arc Sys has this in the bag. There's already a lot of hype for it, and I can't imagine anything Capcom could do at this point besides just do some crossover DLC with Tokon . Who knows, maybe MvC5 could happen, but Tokon is definitely going to have some implications on what happens with it. No specific release date has been announced for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls , but we should expect the title to release sometime in 2026 for PC and PS5.

‘Marvel Tokon' Puts Marvel Back in Its Best Gaming Home

Before the likes of Insomniac Games and Square Enix got their hands on Marvel, the publisher's superheroes inhabited many a genre. But they were most at home in the fighting space—X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, and of course its many, many crossovers with Capcom, which famously include the vs. Capcom series, are fondly remembered and define Marvel's video game presence. Since 2017's Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, and with the growing popularity of cinematic action-adventure titles, no one knew if Marvel would ever return to the fighting space. Then came PlayStation's recent State of Play stream, which concluded with the reveal of a wholly new title: Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, courtesy of Arc System Works, the Japanese studio best known for BlazBlue and several Dragon Ball fighting titles. The 2026-bound game has caught attention online thanks to its art style and the pedigree of its developer. Oh, and it's a 4v4 tag team fighter, the very same thing which defined Marvel vs. Capcom. (Save for that series being 3v3.) A behind-the-scenes video for Marvel Tōkon shows this wasn't just a happy accident. Marvel Games' Michael Francisco explicitly stated PlayStation came to them with a desire to 'bring Marvel back to the forefront of the tag-team fighting genre,' a tacit admission that Infinite came and went faster than expected. The game reportedly missed its sales targets after less than a year of release, and launched to decent, but not glowing, reviews. A particular critque was aimed at its roster; previous entries got to have big, then-out there choices like Nova, MODOK, and Silver Samurai. Infinte was not so lucky, and coming out at the height of the MCU, it primarily featured characters Marvel had the rights to, which famously meant the loss of a bunch of series staples, including no Doctor Doom or X-Men of any kind. Since then, things have worked in Marvel's favor (read: Disney bought all of Fox) that it's been less restrictive about who's in their big video games. Blade, the Fantastic Four, and various X-Men are all over Marvel Rivals and Midnight Suns when they wouldn't have been just a decade earlier. That freedom will be a big help for Tōkon; rosters are a huge draw of fighting games, and Arc System Works showed it's got the juice right away with its opening lineup including Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes), Storm, and Doctor Doom. There's likely some intentional cross-mixing here with NetEase's future Rivals additions—sooner or later, Kamala and Robbie will be in the game, I'm certain—but it also doesn't hurt that several characters will use this game to make their debut in the genre. Fighting games are big and flashy as hell, and one way to get people interested would be showing how someone like Miles Morales or the Vision translates to a genre we've never seen them inhabit before. Also working in Tōkon's favor is how it'll run unopposed in the licensed fighting game space for a while, at least when it comes to its direct competitor. After Injustice 2 in 2017, NetherRealm has kept its focus on Mortal Kombat, likely in part because it didn't know if it'd even get to to keep making Injustice. Now that it's closed the book on Mortal Kombat 1, a third Injustice is probably around the corner eventually. But making games takes time, and the studio's next project is likely a year or two away from a reveal, much less release. Until then, Arc System Works will keep on showing off its roster, gameplay mechanics, and art design to an audience more than eager to play with a shiny new Marvel thing. With the existence of Marvel Tōkon, a popular joke floating around is how put out Capcom might feel about all this. The Resident Evil publisher has had plenty of hits in recent years that it might be willing to let Marvel vs. Capcom hang on the shelf indefinitely, but it might also renew the developer's desire to get the franchise back on track. A collection of remastered games from 2024 might've helped get the ball rolling on a potential revival, and last year, Capcom producer Shuhei Mastumoto underlined that both companies would be keen to bring MvC back. Having a classic fighting series stand alongside a fresh new one would definitely be a boon to Marvel and their respective developers. We won't know until we know, but regardless of how things shake out, lovers of the fighting game space will be more than satiated.

Sony reveals Project Defiant arcade fighting stick

Sony has a new PlayStation-branded arcade-style fight stick coming soon. The controller, dubbed Project Defiant, was just announced during the June 2025 State of Play showcase. It should pair nicely with some of the best fighting games on PS5 as well as the recently announced Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection and the Arc System Works fighting game Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. The teaser only showed the stick, but more details were revealed in a subsequent PlayStation blog post. There Sony revealed that the controller can wirelessly connect to a PS5 or PC using PlayStation Link technology, though you can optionally plug it in via a USB-C cable. According to Sony, the Link allows for "ultra-low latency" with the aim of facilitating precise responses when pressing buttons or moving the stick. The Project Defiant fight stick is "custom designed" by Sony and features at least eight buttons with mechanical switches. It's a digital stick, so you can move it orthogonally but not freely in any direction. There is also a touchpad similar to the one on the DualSense controller and interchangeable restrictor gates. The controller will also come with a carrying case that includes a lever gap to keep the stick safe. Sony did not share a release date beyond 2026 instead saying that more details would come in the "months ahead." Those details will include the actual device name and eventually the launch date. But we'll have to wait and try one for ourselves to see if it's one of the best fight sticks for PS5. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.

The Internet Reacts To A New Marvel Fighting Game Without Capcom

This month's State of Play presentation was a certified banger for PlayStation, with a ton of exciting games coming to the PlayStation 5 in the next year. Final Fantasy Tactics remaster? Check. The first look at IO Interactive's James Bond origin story? Got it. But perhaps the biggest announcement was Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, a new 4v4 fighting game starring Marvel superheroes by Arc System Works, the developer behind some incredible anime fighters like Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, the Persona 4 Arena games, and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Fighting Souls closed out the showcase, and the game looks incredible. Arc System Works is consistently putting out some of the best fighting games on the market, and seeing the game really lean into the studio's signature anime fighter stylings instead of feeling sanitized for the western property is really encouraging. The initial reaction to the trailer was a lot of unbridled hype, but a Sony-published Marvel fighting game also raises a lot of questions. To start off with the good, the Marvel fandom is already embracing the game. There's excitement around the prospect of 4v4 fights as well as the new anime-inspired designs for classic heroes like Iron Man and Captain America, and folks are already making fun edits of what little we've seen of the game. Even after only seeing a trailer and a behind-the-scenes interview, fans already like what they see. They're also speculating about what other Marvel heroes might show up in the roster and planning possible character combos, so it's clearly made a strong first impression that has fighting game fans' minds racing as they consider Fighting Souls' potential. There's also a fair number of folks joking that this game might spell trouble for the upcoming League of Legends fighting game 2XKO, which also uses a similar tag-team battle format. The girls are fighting. Wrapped up in all this excitement is a big question, however. Is Fighting Souls the future of Marvel fighting games? Does this mean that hopes of a new Marvel vs. Capcom are out the window? It's been eight years since the last installment in Capcom's crossover fighter. 2017's Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite is largely considered a disappointment by fans and underperformed financially, so Capcom stopped supporting it fairly quickly. After nearly a decade, fans have started wondering if the series will ever make a comeback. Now, with Arc System Works creating a Marvel-centric fighting game that uses similar tag-team mechanics to those in Marvel vs. Capcom, the prospect of a new game in which Ryu and Cyclops face off seems like a pipe dream. The cuck jokes write themselves. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is coming to PC and PlayStation 5 in 2026. Given Sony is publishing the game and also owns EVO, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, Fighting Souls is pretty much guaranteed to be a staple of the show next year. This year's tournament begins on August 1, and I wouldn't be surprised if Sony and Arc System Works had more Fighting Souls announcements ready for the event. Star-Lord has already been confirmed as a playable character, so at least one of my mains is locked in. For another, give me Mr. Fantastic, Arc System Works. Let me slap people from the other side of the screen, Dhalsim the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
