Coronation Street star addresses health battle that left her feeling faint

Metro7 hours ago

Former Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver has spoken out about her Type 2 diabetes diagnosis.
Sue, 61, bowed out of her Eileen Grimshaw role after 25 years earlier this month.
The much-loved character left Weatherfield for a new life in Thailand after confessing that she had fallen out of love with George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley).
Having been given the chance to invest in son Jason Grimshaw's (Ryan Thomas) bar, she decided to make her trip to Southeast Asia permanent.
Sue announced her exit at the beginning of the year, explaining that she wanted to explore new avenues.
Now, ahead of taking on a new theatre role, she has discussed her health and how she felt faint while filming scenes on the ITV soap two decades ago.
'I think there is a lot of misunderstanding around diabetes, people tell you can't eat chocolate or sugar – but where I struggle with my diabetes is when I'm about to go on stage or when I'm about to go on Loose Women or live shows' she said.
'Before I go on I'd have to prick my finger and check if my sugar is stable enough to get me to the interval or do I need to eat.'
Continuing to The Sun, Sue added: 'If I'm about to go on stage or live shows and I don't know if I'm going to make it if my sugars aren't stable enough, and I don't have time to prick my finger, you tend to think: 'Let me eat this thing now', and then you tend to feel the effects of it later or the middle of the show.
'But with Dexcom (a glucose monitor), I just have to look at my phone and see my sugar levels, it takes all of the worry out of it.' More Trending
The star also spoke about her exit story, and how she wanted it to mirror her real life decision.

'I'm chuffed with my Coronation Street legacy,' she said.
'They gave me a wonderful send off and the ending that I asked for and I wanted Eileen's exit to mirror what I feel I'm doing and what I want other women to do – to live fearlessly, don't let fear hold you back, be who you want to be.

'It's never too late to try something new, that's what I wanted for her, this realisation for her to go 'hang on a minute, I don't have to stay, I can do something completely different, all it takes is courage.'

Pop star's Glasto set CANCELLED after overcrowding fears

The weather for the weekend has been revealed. PinkPantheress - real name Victoria Beverley Walker - was scheduled to play a 30 minute slot on the Levels stage in Silver Hayes at 11pm. Now, Roza Terenzi will play 10.30pm to midnight, in between a Confidence Man DJ set and Marie Davidson. All is not lost for PinkPantheress fans though as they can still catch the 24-year-old on the Woodies Stage at 7.30pm on Friday. Fans have reacted to the reshuffle on Reddit, with one writing: "Was going to be dangerously rammed." Another said: "Probably for the best, having anything remotely popular on the stage (especially on Thursday) is always a recipe for disaster." A third posted: "Could have seen that coming, why even book it then." As a fourth wrote: "Yeah everyone knew it would be carnage from the moment it was announced." The Sun has contacted Glastonbury for comment. The up-and-coming star has 2.6m followers on Instagram and found fame after breaking out from social media app TikTok. She's had a top 10 in the UK singles and album charts, respectively, and been nominated for three Brit Awards. Rock legend 'gives away' he's Glastonbury's mystery performer as he flies into UK days before festival Lineup aside, the other big talking point ahead of the festival is the Glastonbury weather forecast. It has been subject to notoriously unpredictable weather over the course of it's 50 year history, but this year's revellers look like they'll luck out. When Britpop veterans Supergrass kick off the Pyramid stage at 12pm on Friday, the Met Office is predicting temperatures of 22C. By the time The 1975 headline the main stage at 10:15pm, temperatures will have dropped to 17C. The chance of rain remains low throughout the day at around 10 to 20 per cent. Saturday is expected to bring similarly warm temperatures, reaching highs of 23C. The festival is set to finish on a high, with temperatures climbing to 24C. 3 PinkPantheress with rapper Central Cee

EastEnders' Samantha Womack's final decision over baby with Emmerdale partner

EXCLUSIVE: Samantha Womack was diagnosed with breast cancer in August last year, and now the former EastEnders star reveals how her and partner Oliver's decision for having a baby Chatting from her home in Spain's Valencia mountains, with only her rescue dogs for company, former EastEnders actress Samantha Womack couldn't sound happier. The 52-year-old underwent gruelling treatment for breast cancer after being diagnosed in August 2022, but says she now believes the experience has changed her outlook on life for the better. Last year, the actress, who is already mum to Benjamin, 24, and Lili-Rose, 20, her children with her ex-husband Mark Womack, hinted she and Oliver were considering becoming parents together. ‌ 'We've talked about adopting, because after the cancer treatment I wouldn't be able to conceive naturally and because of my age,' she says. ‌ 'But I think I'm learning to put things in perspective and hopefully, in the next 10 years, one of my kids will produce a sproglet and I can go from maternal to gra-ternal!' The pair starred together in the play The Girl on the Train, which began touring in 2019. Later, they realised their friendship had blossomed into romance. The couple were brought even closer together when Sam was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2022. She is now free of the disease, but Oliver recalls:"It sort of changes your outlook and makes you possibly appreciate what you've got a bit more and maybe live your life a bit more as well." Sam had only gone in for a routine check but Oliver cannot imagine what would have happened if she hadn't. "That really saved us," he says. The way Sam handled her ordeal made Oliver even more in awe of her. "She wanted to get through everything and get back on stage as quickly as possible," he says. "She's a real fighter, and she won't let things get in her way. But, she was just so brave and eloquent speaking about what's she's been through and gracious." ‌ The couple first shared a fleeting encounter courtesy of Oliver's then Corrie co-star Les Dennis. Les had just left the ITV soap after becoming Pat Phelan's first victim, Michael Rodwell. He had invited Oliver to see him in the stage production of The Addams Family in which he was co-starring with Sam. "I was meant to see it, but I was on a night shoot," says Oliver. "But I was walking past the theatre to say hi to him and Sam was there too. I said, 'Hi, nice to meet you' and that was it! "We properly met on The Girl on the Train. The play was only meant to be six months but then it went on for another six months. We actually worked together for pretty much the whole year and we became really good friends. And we just stayed in touch afterwards really." The couple clearly share an amazing relationship judging by the sweet posts Sam has shared on social media. Oliver is equally smitten, not least by his partner's acting ability. "Sam was absolutely brilliant in The Girl on the Train," he says. "She was on stage for the whole two hours. It was a very big performance."

Benidorm return 'in crisis' after Derren Litten's divorce from star Jake Canuso

As rumours about a new series of much-loved comedy Benidorm continue, it has been reported that Derren Litten and Jake Canuso's separation is adding extra complications The return of iconic show Benidorm has been thrown into crisis after creator Derren Litten 'miserable' divorce from the show's biggest star Jake Canuso, it has been claimed. The couple called it quits in 2023 and things are between the producer and the actor - Lothario Matteo in the ITV comedy - are said to be tense. With talks about a return of the much-loved programme still possible, the news comes as a hammer blow to fans. ‌ Benidorm aired for ten series from 2007 until 2018. The show focuses on an all-inclusive hotel in Spain where the same family holiday each year. It featured the likes of Johnny Vegas, Tim Healy, Steve Pemberton, Siobhan Finneran and icid-tongued force of nature Madge, played brilliantly by veteran Sheila Reid. ‌ All left before the final series, throwing a return for any of the big names into doubt. That means stars like long-serving Jake were key to getting a revival off the ground, but the situation between the slippery barman and creator Derren makes things difficult, it has been reported. The pair officially divorced last year after living together in Benidorm. They even opened a bar called 'Matteo's' where Jake would turn up for guest appearances. Derren said on X last year: 'I don't really talk about my personal life here but the reason I've been a bit scarce on the socials is for the last 18 months I've been going through a pretty miserable divorce. So I'm obviously poor now. And you thought we couldn't have more in common then we already do?!' A source told The Sun. 'Matteo is Benidorm, he's the character that everyone wants to see. He's been part of the Solana since the beginning so for him not to feature in any future reboot, well it just would not be the same without him. Jake created one of the show's most loved characters in Matteo but with everything that's happened between him and Derren, it's not looking good.' Another insider said: 'Conversations have been had. The only way Jake will return is if ITV make him a huge offer, one that he could not possibly turn down. But obviously Derren is making negotiations difficult. He is the writer and creator and believes that he should make all the decisions - the fans would want to see Matteo, which ITV get. It's all become one big headache.' A spokesperson for Jake told the publication they were unaware of any planned return for Benidorm. But all-grown-up Oliver Stokes - who played Michael Garvey since the first show - recently appeared on Loose Women, alongside Hannah Hobley, who played mum-to-Coolio Chantelle. ‌ Oliver was looked after by his grandparents while on set in Benidorm playing the cheeky youngster who ran amok around the Solana Hotel pool. "I had to do a minimum of three hours of schooling a day, which was an absolute bonus," he joked. "But in a way, it wasn't really the best because I didn't really pay attention or do much work. Oh well, it was an experience." Oliver has now taken a step back from acting and works as a successful tradesman, explaining, "It got to a point where I just thought I wanted an income every month guaranteed, instead of not knowing when your next job is going to come. "I'd love to get back into the future if the right thing came about but who knows?" Aside from keeping busy with his toddler Archie, he is also an avid fisherman and runs a fish bait company called Active Baits. Hannah began by saying the show had received so much "love and support" over the rumours, adding: "At the moment, they are just rumours." The studio audience broke out into a chorus of disappointed sighs, with Charlene then revealing she had a statement from ITV regarding the return of Benidorm in the future. "ITV say, 'We've spoken to one of our sources over here and there's nothing commissioned yet, but we'll keep our fingers crossed'," she announced, giving everyone some hope.
