Cops send civic bodies list of 446 ‘dangerous spots'
Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police has identified 464 spots in the city that need immediate attention to prevent accidents and traffic issues. The repair work needs to be completed before the monsoon sets in completely, the Kolkata Police stated on Saturday.

The list is being shared with all civic agencies, including KMC and PWD.
The spots include potholed roads, loose branches blocking signals, and even naked wires hanging loose from posts.
According to police, the list was prepared based on ground-level analysis, including photography and videography of each spot by traffic cops attached to the 25 guards. Among the guards that reported the maximum problem points are the Headquarters Traffic Guard (31 points), Bhowanipore (37), Ultadanga (40), and Diamond Harbour Traffic Guard (34).
Amongst the important highlights in the report are the spots on AJC Bose Road, Dargah Road, CIT Road, Strand Road, Christopher Road, and EM Bypass (between Ruby Metro and Kalikapur crossing) where the road surface is pathetic. Across DH Road and Banamali Naskar Road in Behala or Bidhan Sarani or Paharpur Road, the problem chiefly is about naked wires.
"We prepared a list ahead of the monsoon and requested the authorities to look into it.
Now we are preparing a more detailed report. However, these spots need immediate attention to stop accidents. It is easier to manage traffic and people during Durga Pujas when the condition of the roads is good," said a DCP.
"The condition of Strand Road near Howrah bridge, for example, is so bad that we don't know where to put the barricade. The patchwork in some places is shoddy, and on some stretches, two different levels have been created on the road surface," a senior police officer posted in central Kolkata said.

"Unlike other years, we started the job earlier to give time to civic agencies to carry out repair work since Durga Puja is in Sept this year. We will attach photographs of the spot and a landmark so that these potholes can be easily identified by the agencies. In certain areas, like Biren Roy Road West and RG Kar Road, our cops are on duty for 14 hours to ensure traffic is not stalled," a senior police officer said.

Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police launched a comprehensive awareness campaign titled 'Mind the Gap' on Friday, focusing on the growing menace of tailgating, which has led to multiple freak road accidents and even road rage incidents across the city in recent months. The initiative, which combines both digital and on-ground efforts, aims to educate drivers about maintaining safe distances between vehicles. "We observed a concerning rise in road incidents linked to tailgating. In the past three months alone, we received dozens of complaints where tailgating was the primary cause," said a senior officer. The campaign will utilise social media platforms, including Facebook, X, and Instagram, to disseminate educational content and safety guidelines. Additionally, traffic officers plan to conduct awareness sessions at major intersections across the city. According to police data, tailgating-related incidents increase during peak hours on major arterial roads like EM Bypass and AJC Bose Road. The campaign introduces the "three-second" rule — maintaining a minimum three-second gap between vehicles — as a standard safety measure. Digital displays at key traffic signals will demonstrate proper distances to be maintained between vehicles and showcase real-time examples of safe driving practices. "We are not incorporating a penalty right now and clubbing it with an MV Act offence. We expect better driver behaviour at the crossings and even during parking," said an ACP. Cops also plan to partner with several driving schools and automotive associations to extend the campaign's reach. Commuter Sumit Banerjee hailed the initiative. "I have experienced aggressive tailgating numerous times. It is dangerous. The two-wheeler riders are the worst offenders." Kolhapur civic body seeks 50 additional e-buses from central govt
Kolhapur: The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) has requested for additional 50 electric buses from central govt's PM-eBus Sewa project for its transport service — Kolhapur Municipal Transport (KMT). A proposal outlining this demand has been submitted to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Currently, the KMC has received approval for 100 e-buses. Of these, 40 are expected to join the KMT fleet shortly, with the remaining 60 will be delivered in phases. The demand for additional buses is based on the city's growing population and anticipated increase in passenger numbers if nearby villages are integrated into the municipal officer P N Gurav said, "A large amount of development work is going on in the workshop of KMT at Buddha Garden. An electric charging station is being set up. A total of 40 e-buses are expected to arrive anytime soon in the first batch."He added, "Considering the increased passenger count once the merger of fringe villages takes place into the municipal limits and scrapping of 75 old buses, a proposal for additional 50 e-buses was sent to the Centre as per the instructions of civic administrator K Manjulekshmi. These buses are expected to arrive fleet by 2027."In order to reduce environmental pollution and make journey of urban commuters comfortable, central govt will be providing a total of 3,162 e-buses for cities across the country. In this, the share of Maharashtra is as much as 1,290 buses for 15 cities.
