Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar detained twice in a day; BJP slams 'repressive' Mamata government

KOLKATA: Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar on Friday alleged that he was obstructed by the police twice in a row on the same day. Dr Majumdar accused Kolkata Police of resisting BJP's attempts to observe 'Pashchimbanga Divas' by trying to stop a two-wheeler rally led by him from reaching Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's residence on Elgin Road in south Kolkata. Later, he was stopped again while on his way to meet a doctor at the latter's residence in the Bhowanipur area. When the doctor, identified as Rajat Subhra Banerjee, went down the road to meet the Union Minister, he was also picked up in a police car. Both were detained and taken to Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters. Protesting 'the repressive behaviour of the autocratic Mamata Banerjee Government', the state BJP has called for blockades, demonstrations, and movements in every district centre today and tomorrow. Notably, Dr Rajat Subhra Banerjee had last year asked a few questions to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during an interaction at Kellogg College in London regarding the present situation in West Bengal. According to political observers, the incident had put the state government in an awkward position.

Kolkata Police urges regional passport office in Bengal to cancel passports made through fake documents

Kolkata: The Kolkata Police, on Friday, sent a communique to the Regional Passport Office (RPO) in West Bengal, requesting the latter to immediately initiate cancelling passports made on the basis of fake documents, especially birth certificates. An insider from the city police said that recently the officials investigating the fake passport rackets in the state unearthed a major fraud case in Pathankhali under Gosaba block in South 24 Parganas district, which was involved in manufacturing of fake birth certificates, often used as the basic and first-step document in the long process of arranging fake Indian passports. The police officials also secured specific information that many of the fake birth certificates arranged by the Pathankhali-based rackets were subsequently used for making fake Indian passports. The investigating officers also secured information that using the fake passports issued on the basis of these false birth certificates, some of the passport holders concerned left India and are currently residing abroad. In light of the evolving situation, the city police insider said, the RPO has been requested to cancel those passports made through fake documents immediately and without further delay. "At the same time, a separate communique has been sent to the headquarters of the state Health department requesting the latter to immediately cancel the fake birth certificates whose information has been secured by the investigation officials," the city police insiders said. Confirming the receipt of the communique from the state police, a senior official of the state Health department confirmed that the process had already started for cancelling these fake birth certificates. The fact that fake birth certificates were acting as the roots for arranging other Indian identity documents was first noticed earlier this year by the investigating officials probing the multi-crore fake passport rackets operating from the state. The investigating officers noticed a pattern in the operation of such rackets, where the illegal infiltrators, mainly from Bangladesh, were first provided with safe shelters at the different villages adjacent to the borders with Bangladesh in the state, both land and coastal, and subsequently, the agents arranged for fake birth certificates and fake ration cards for them, which were the first steps for making other identity documents.

Kol, Bidhannagar cops crack down on bikes without silencers

1 2 3 4 5 6 Kolkata: Police in Kolkata and Bidhannagar have launched a special crackdown on motorcycles fitted with illegally modified silencers that generate excessive noise, following a surge in complaints from residents over sound pollution. The joint drive, underway since early June, has seen multiple seizures and fines being imposed across the city, with Kolkata Police alone registering 48 cases and carrying out around a dozen seizures in the past week. Officials said the majority of complaints came from residents in south and east Kolkata, particularly during nighttime hours. "All 26 traffic guards in Kolkata are acting against modified silencers, but most seizures have come from South, Park Circus, Sealdah, East, Garia, and Tiljala guards," said a senior officer at Lalbazar. "The Park Circus guard alone seized 15 modified bikes this week, including five on Friday. South guard continues to report the highest volume of cases." Hotspots such as Tiljala Road, Suhrawardy Avenue, and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road have emerged as prime locations for such offences. In Bidhannagar, the drive is focused on New Town, VIP Road, and surrounding areas. A senior Bidhannagar police officer said, "These bikers often slow down at traffic signals to avoid detection, but speed up with loud revs once they cross the signal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo We've instructed officers to coordinate between signals to stop and prosecute such offenders. " According to traffic police officials, the modified silencers are often installed without any legal approval and solely for attracting attention, which is a punishable offence. "Violators face vehicle seizure under Section 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act and a fine of Rs 5,000. The vehicle can be released only with permission from the DC (Traffic), and in some cases, the owner may be prosecuted in court," said a deputy commissioner of traffic. Lalbazar has also issued instructions for additional enforcement, including summoning the parents of minor offenders and the registered owners of seized vehicles. Police have been asked to record number plates or video evidence when intercepting the bikers is not possible in real-time. "The collected data will be passed to the control room for follow-up and legal action," the officer added.

KP's safety notice to central Kol puja

Kolkata: The Santosh Mitra Square Puja Committee has received a stringent directive from Kolkata Police, days after announcing their Durga Puja theme for this year. The cop directive cited last year's near-stampede incident as the primary reason for the enhanced rules. An officer said: "The violations last year almost led to a stampede. We want to ensure nothing of this sort happens this year. This is for the benefit of pandal-hoppers." Sajal Ghosh, a key official of the puja committee and BJP leader, has raised concerns about what he perceives as discriminatory treatment by law enforcement. The police letter, which Ghosh mockingly termed a "love letter", outlines safety regulations for the festival. "I want to know how many puja committees across Bengal received such a letter? Surely, none. So, are they above the law, or is there a separate law for us?" he asked. The list includes widening entrance and exit paths, installing a minimum of 60 CCTV cameras, deploying 250 volunteers during peak hours, and prohibiting laser/light/sound shows. The committee must also establish a designated police surveillance area within the pandal and ensure there are no stalls near entrances and exits. Other requirements include public address systems, proper barricading, and maintaining clear signage from BOI More to the pandal. Cops have also prohibited Ferris wheel or similar amusement rides on the premises. The police have requested a mitigation plan from the committee by June 25 and mandated a meeting to discuss implementation strategies.

All 10 Kolkata Police divisions to have cybercrime police stations

1 2 3 Kolkata: As cybercrimes and cyber threats surge across the city, Kolkata Police has begun planning "out-of-the-box" strategies to counter the menace. Besides rapidly modernizing itself and creating avenues to train more policemen with sophisticated modes of investigation, Lalbazar is also considering establishing a cybercrime police station in each of its 10 divisions. Although the exact launch date for these cyber stations is not yet determined, senior cops have initially agreed on the importance of creating these stations. Sources indicate that the process of identifying suitable buildings or locations for these stations in each division has already begun. Currently, Kolkata Police has only one cybercrime police station, located centrally at Lalbazar. Additionally, each division has a separate cyber unit that assists in solving various crimes and recovering mobile phones under the leadership of the divisional DCP. "There is no final decision yet on the role of these cyber units once the new cyber stations are established in each division. In all likelihood, these units will be expanded into full-fledged police stations. This will also solve the problem of lodging FIRs with local police stations, even as the cyber cell of the division handles the probe, leading to victims being forced to run around from one unit to another once essential recoveries are made," said a senior cop. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like BMW iX2 100% électrique BMW Voir les offres Undo Since this will entail huge manpower, the expansion is likely to occur in phases once the proposal is placed formally before the state administration and gets the necessary go-ahead, said the officers. Ever since Manoj Verma took charge as the commissioner of Kolkata, he has put a stronger emphasis on the cybercrime department, trying to return the duped amounts quickly and break the organised rackets.
