Gangs of London gives Squid Game a run for its money when it comes to TV ultra-violence and also offers up a complex web of intrigue and betrayal. Two of its stars go to very different places to prepare themselves for the more intense days on set. One prefers solitude. The other thrives on noise and adrenaline.
Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, who plays undercover cop-turned-gangster Elliot Finch, and Narges Rashidi, who is Kurdish gang boss Lale in the show, talked about how they get in the zone when the tension is ramped up.

'I scream,' Rashidi said. 'I run around a lot to get my adrenaline very high. I feel like once my body has a lot of adrenaline, I can actually go anywhere. That really helps me. It's actually a very technical thing.'
If Rashidi is loud, Dìrísù is at the other end of the volume scale. 'I'll disappear and then you'll only see me appear when it's like: 'Okay, we're ready,'' he said. 'I'll go hide in the corner somewhere, or go for a walk, because sets can be very noisy places. I'll take responsibility to take myself away and maintain the zone or atmosphere that I need.'
The duo were at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival this week talking about their show, which is produced by Pulse Films for Sky in the UK and AMC in the U.S. Detailing the bloody power struggles among London's crime gangs, the current third season picks up the story after a spiked shipment of cocaine kills scores of customers.
Elliot faces off against crime boss Sean Wallace (Joe Cole) in the series and Dìrísù said he's often taken aback by the reactions to his character after a turn of events that saw him almost hang his rival, but then leave him to police. 'What surprised me is that anyone could be on Sean Wallace's side,' he said. 'I've got so much empathy for Elliot that in that duality between them — the 'Batman versus Joker' or Elliot versus Sean [dynamic] — it never made sense to me that someone could be like: 'How could you do this to Sean?''
This week it's Monte-Carlo, while last month Dìrísù was a few miles along the coast at the Cannes Film Festival with Akinola Davies Jr.'s My Father's Shadow, in which he stars. Dìrísù wants to flex different muscles with his work, he told Deadline when asked about the range of films and TV he has worked on.
The first season of Gangs of London aired in 2020 and Dìrísù wanted to avoid being pigeon-holed in the wake of its success. 'It did seem that everybody in the world just wanted me to do more action work,' he said. 'I really love being able to come back to Gangs… but I didn't want it to define what the rest of my career looked like. So, I was very intentional about choosing other projects such as Mr. Malcolm's List, for example, and His House, in different genres. I wanted to be regarded as being a very well-rounded actor.'

The battle between old and new money families continued… Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon), whose family is considered 'new money' because of her railroad tycoon husband's fortune, was still shut out by old money elites like Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy), an influential patron at the well-established Academy of Music. Bertha was fed up with Mrs. Astor denying her family an opera box, which was seen as a symbol of status and power. Hell-bent on climbing the social ladder, Bertha started an opera war and used her family's wealth to support the newly built Metropolitan Opera. The new venue threatened audience attendance on opening night at the Academy of Music. Bertha won the opera war when the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb) ultimately decided to attend the Met opening, which was met with high societal fanfare. But Bertha's victory came at a cost, it seems, which is implied at the end of the season that she promised her daughter Gladys's (Taissa Farmiga) hand to the Duke. The Russell family patriarch, George Russell (Morgan Spector), faced backlash from the steelworkers who manufactured his railroads and demanded fair pay and better working conditions. Tensions reached a boiling point when armed militia were ready to shoot the protesting laborers. George called off his men before things turned violent and granted some of the laborers' demands. Meanwhile, Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) found out that her son Oscar (Blake Ritson) had lost the family fortune. Ada Forte (Cynthia Nixon), Agnes's sister, learns that her late husband left her a substantial fortune, and the power dynamic Agnes had with Ada has started to shift. The period melodrama included juicy romances in the love lives of Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) and Peggy Scott (Denée Benton). Marian realized she's in love with Larry Russell (Harry Richardson), while Peggy shut down her affair with T. Thomas Fortune (Sullivan Jones), a married man. According to a media release from HBO, the Russell family is poised to take their place at the head of high society, following Bertha's victory in the opera wars. 'Bertha sets her sights on a prize that would elevate the family to unimaginable heights, while George risks everything on a gambit that could revolutionize the railroad industry — if it doesn't ruin him first,' HBO says. Bertha has high hopes for a marriage between her daughter Gladys and the Duke, despite her daughter's interest in another young man, Billy Carlton (Matt Walker). In Season 2, George had also promised Gladys she could marry for love, even if it went against Bertha's wishes. This leads to greater conflict between George and Bertha in the new season. Across 61st Street from the Russell household on the Upper East Side, Agnes struggles to accept Ada's new position as lady of the house with her newfound wealth. Peggy meets a new love interest from Newport, R.I., whose family isn't keen on her career as a writer and journalist. 'Every second counts,' and that's made no clearer than on FX's The Bear. Returning on June 25, the Emmy-winning series will transport audiences back to the chaotic fine dining restaurant helmed by tortured culinary genius Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White). FX quietly renewed the series for a fourth season in March 2024. The latest season was filmed back-to-back with season 3, Deadline reported. Ahead, we break down everything you need to know before The Bear returns. The season three finale ends with a foreboding 'to be continued' on the screen. In the final scene of the season, Carmy looks down at his phone to see that the Chicago Tribune review of his restaurant has posted — and that he has a number of missed calls from both Cicero (Oliver Platt) and the Computer (Brian Koppelman). We don't get a close enough look at the review to fully know whether it's positive or negative, though fans have tried to decipher what it says. Carmy angrily exclaims 'motherf***er' after reading it — if that's any sort of indication. And if the review is bad, Cicero will stop funding the restaurant. Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), meanwhile, has a tough decision to make: Will she sign the partnership agreement and stick it out with the Bear or jump ship and take up former Ever chef Adam Shapiro's offer as his new chef de cuisine? Carmy's strict list of non-negotiables and toxic pursuit of culinary excellence could be enough reason for Sydney to cut ties with him and start new elsewhere. In the Season 4 trailer, Carmy seems eager to turn his attitude and the restaurant's morale around, though it may be too late. 'Look, we could do this. We could take care of people. We could make it calm. We could make it delicious. We could make people happy,' Carmy says. Thankfully, we won't have to wait for weekly episode drops. All 10 episodes of the fourth season will be available to stream on Hulu starting June 25 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. It wouldn't be The Bear without the group of chefs — or Jeffs — responsible for running it. The Bear has previously featured a noteworthy roster of guest stars like John Cena as Sammy Fak and Josh Hartnett as the fiancé of Richie's ex-wife Tiff (Gillian Jacobs), who were both introduced in the third season. Jon Bernthal, beloved for his role as Carmy and Sugar's big brother who passed away, and Joel McHale as David Fields, Carmy's abusive old boss from New York, also appear in flashbacks throughout the series. Will Poulter as chef Luca and Olivia Colman as chef Terry emerged as fan favorites during the show's second season. Neither has outright confirmed they're returning, but Poulter's made his adoration of the show common knowledge. 'I really hope so,' Poulter told the Los Angeles Times in April of whether he'd be returning to The Bear. 'I love that show so much. The fact I get to be in it is crazy. When I'm on that set, I'm like, 'Oh, they've let a fan on set.' I literally feel like a competition winner.' The cast has remained pretty mum on details surrounding the Emmy-winning series' fourth season. What we do know, though, is that Edebiri, who made her directorial debut with Season 3, Episode 6's 'Napkins' on The Bear, also cowrote an episode for Season 4 with Boyce. 'Each season I've gotten to do different things,' Edebiri told actor-director Ramy Youssef for Cultured magazine. 'Last season I directed for the first time and this season I've written an episode. It's been a minute since I've written for TV, and I've learned so much since the last time — even something as simple as knowing what it's like to shoot an overnight. So, my episode will be taking place during the day.'

The film, which takes place in 2500 A.D. after humanity has gone extinct, features the relationship between a weather buoy and a passing satellite that communicate after watching uploaded videos of humans (Stewart and Yeun) interacting and, in turn, start to model their own behavior as if they were human.
