EAC nod to Puri international airport; study on Olive Ridleys, birds suggested

BHUBANESWAR: After the Ministry of Civil Aviation accorded in-principle approval, the proposed international airport at Puri has taken a significant step forward with the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) submitting its report after a recent site inspection. Sources said the report included several recommendations, indicating that environmental clearance (EC) for the project may be granted soon. A four-member subcommittee headed by EAC chairman Ram Kumar had visited the site at Sipasarubali under Brahmagiri tehsil during April 4-6. Although as per the Ancient Indian History Culture and Archaeology (AIHCA) department of Utkal University report, there would be no adverse impact on Shree Jagannath Temple by the airport when operational, the sub-committee has advised project proponent, Commerce and Transport department, to take the opinion of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The project lies within 10 km of the shrine and other older structures.

Char Dham yatra: 3 pilgrims from different states die of heart attack

Dehradun: Three pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu died of heart attacks on different routes of the Char Dham yatra on Thursday, said officials. With these, the total number of pilgrim deaths during this year's yatra has crossed 89, as per the state emergency operation centre. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The deceased have been identified as Ram Kumar, 62, from Uttar Pradesh, Bato Bai Yadav, 65, from Madhya Pradesh, and Venu Gopal, 70, from Tamil Nadu. Kumar was found unconscious near Bheembali on the Kedarnath trek route and was taken to a nearby health centre, where doctors declared him dead. Yadav, who was on the yatra with her family, died near Janki Chatti on the Yamunotri route while Venu Gopal died in the Gangotri area. Of those who have died on the yatra route during this year's pilgrimage, most succumbed to health issues, primarily cardiac-related, according to govt data. The four shrines are located at elevations exceeding 10,000ft in the Garhwal Himalayas, making the pilgrimage particularly challenging for individuals with underlying health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or ailments related to the heart, kidney, liver and respiratory system. The high altitude results in lower oxygen levels and extreme cold, often dipping below freezing, which poses serious risks for those with comorbidities. Pilgrims found with such conditions during health screenings are counselled about the associated risks. Authorities have maintained that a robust health infrastructure is in place along the yatra route, including 69 medical officers, 121 staff nurses, 26 pharmacists, 309 oxygen-equipped beds, six ICU beds, 13 departmental ambulances, one blood bank, and two blood storage units. The annual yatra began with the opening of the Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines on April 30, followed by the ceremonial reopening of the Kedarnath and Badrinath temples on May 2 and May 4, respectively.

AAI may take over operation of the multi-level car parking facility at city airport for now

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is likely to take over the multi-level car parking facility at Chennai airport to address complaints about distant cab pick-up points and congestion at entry and exit areas. The existing contractor who manages the Aero Hub (a huge shopping facility at the airport), car parking and cab pick-up points gave termination notice to the AAI some weeks ago. Since then, there have been several rounds of discussions in this regard, sources said. 'A final decision is expected from the Board next week on this issue,' a source said. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the AAI has prepared a tender and will float bids shortly after the final decision from the board comes through. When the new contractor takes over, they need to operate two cab pick-up points, one closer to the T1 Terminal and the other in the multi-level car parking facility. However, as far as the Aero Hub is concerned, it is still not clear whether the AAI will take over or not and the decision lies with the board. For many months, air passengers have been agitated over the shifting of cab pick-up point from T1 Domestic Terminal (near the National Flag point) to the second floor of a multi-level car parking facility. With growing demand to restore the previous cab pick-up point, the AAI began mulling the possibility of an additional pick-up point. Following this, the contractor submitted the termination notice to the AAI, wanting to end the agreement over losses. Ram Kumar, a frequent air passenger, said, 'It will be a big relief for passengers if they can take cabs from the old pick-up point. I found it so much more convenient as it didn't involve a very long walk or taking a lift to the Aero Hub. I'm hoping they make the second pick-up point available for air passengers at the earliest.'The heavily inundated Government Taluk Hospital in Vaniyambadi town near Tirupattur on Saturday.

Court order to attach Sivaji's house recalled

Chennai: Madras high court on Monday recalled its order attaching house of the late actor Sivaji Ganesan in a case relating to default on a loan by his son, Ram Kumar, and grandson, Dusshyanth. Justice Abdul Quddhose recalled the order while allowing a plea moved by actor Prabhu claiming that his brother doesn't have any stake in their father's T Nagar house, ' Annai Illam '. On March 3, the court passed the attachment order on a plea moved by Dhanabakkiam Enterprises to execute a decree in its favour. According to Dhanabakkiam Enterprises, a loan of 3.75 crore was issued to Eshan Productions, represented by Dusshyant and his wife for producing a film 'Jagajala Killadi'. As Dusshyant failed to repay the loan, arbitration proceedings were initiated . A decree was issued in favour of Dhanabakkiam Enterprises to exploit all rights in connection with the film. Since the film could not be completed, the arbitral decree could not be executed by Dhanabakkiam Enterprises, prompting it to move an execution petition to attach Sivaji's house, in which Dusshyant's father, Ram Kumar, holds a share. It wanted the court to execute the arbitral award dated May 4, 2024. During the course of the hearing, the court was informed that Ram Kumar does not hold any stake in the house, and it wholly belongs to Prabhu.
