EAC nod to Puri international airport; study on Olive Ridleys, birds suggested

BHUBANESWAR: After the Ministry of Civil Aviation accorded in-principle approval, the proposed international airport at Puri has taken a significant step forward with the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) submitting its report after a recent site inspection.
Sources said the report included several recommendations, indicating that environmental clearance (EC) for the project may be granted soon. A four-member subcommittee headed by EAC chairman Ram Kumar had visited the site at Sipasarubali under Brahmagiri tehsil during April 4-6.
Although as per the Ancient Indian History Culture and Archaeology (AIHCA) department of Utkal University report, there would be no adverse impact on Shree Jagannath Temple by the airport when operational, the sub-committee has advised project proponent, Commerce and Transport department, to take the opinion of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The project lies within 10 km of the shrine and other older structures.

Boudh gets rail connectivity as PM flags off trains

1 2 Bhubaneswar: For the first time, Boudh district got train services after Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off two new trains and extended the services of three existing trains connecting Purunakatak and Boudh on Friday. Modi flagged off the trains after inaugurating the Sonepur-Purunakatak section (73 km) of the Khurda Road-Balangir (301 km) new line project, connecting Boudh district. This railway section was constructed at a cost of Rs 1,376 crore. With this, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of seven railway projects worth Rs 2,750 crore. "Boudh district headquarters is now connected to the railway network for the first time after completion of this railway section. Finally, our district will be on the railway map of India, fulfilling the decades-old dream of the local people," said Seshadev Jani, a resident of Boudh district. He said people can now visit the Bhairavi temple at Purunakatak by train. "The Sonepur-Purunakatak rail section will strengthen the social and economic connectivity of this region. The PM flagged off the Boudh-Bhubaneswar New-Boudh Weekly Express (18313/18314) and Sambalpur-Boudh-Sambalpur Weekly Express (18311/18312) here. People attended the flag-off ceremony of the trains at Boudh and Purunakatak stations. The Boudh-Bhubaneswar New-Boudh Weekly Express will leave from Boudh at 7 am every Monday and reach Bhubaneswar New at 6.15 pm via Balangir-Sambalpur-Angul-Naraj. In the return direction, this train will leave from Bhubaneswar New at 11 pm on Mondays and reach Boudh at 10.30 am on Tuesdays. Similarly, the Sambalpur-Boudh-Sambalpur Weekly Express from Sambalpur will leave at 7.25 pm on Sundays and arrive at Boudh at 11.55 pm on the same day. The return train from Boudh will leave at 12.15 pm on Tuesdays and reach Sambalpur at 5.30 pm on the same day. Apart from this, the Bhubaneswar-Sonepur-Bhubaneswar Inter-City Express and two pairs of Balangir-Sonepur shuttle passenger trains will now originate from Purunakatak in Boudh district.

11th International Day of Yoga: from palace to heritage sites, yoga to unfold at cultural landmarks

It will be a convergence of yoga and heritage during the 11 International Day of Yoga to be held on Saturday. For, there will be simultaneous yoga performance blending the age-old wisdom of yoga amidst the rich architectural setting of heritage sites including the iconic Mysuru palace, Dariya Daulat Bagh in Srirangapatana, Halebidu, and the Keshava Temple at Somanathapur. While the Archaeological Survey of India is conducting the yoga sessions at the three heritage sites of Dariya Daulat Bagh, Halebidu, and Somanathapur, the Mysuru district administration is organising the event on the palace premises to set the tone. The Department of Ayush and Mysuru Zilla Panchayat is involved in the events to be held at the palace. At Somanathpur Keshava temple which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, senior officials of the Ministry of Education will take part. According to local sources, about 1,200 school children will take part in the yoga day event for which arrangements are in place. The host institution is Central Institute of Indian Languages and the Regional Institute of Education, Mysuru. While showcasing the rich tourism potential and heritage of Karnataka, the yoga day will highlight the imperatives of attaining inner harmony through yoga besides the obvious health benefits. At the Mysuru palace, about 15,000 people will take part in the event, in which participants from various yoga institutions in the city will perform as per the standard protocol issued by the government. The district in-charge Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, MP for Mysuru Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, MLA T.S. Srivatsa, and others will participate. There are scores of yoga institutions in Mysuru which has emerged as a hub for learning the ancient Indian discipline and the genesis of it is traced to the encouragement and patronisation to yoga imparted by the Wadiyars of Mysuru. Some of the legendary yoga gurus like B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, etc., who popularised the discipline all over the world, learnt yoga from Tirumalai Krishnamacharya who was patronised by Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and taught at the Mysuru palace. In 2022, Mysuru was the venue for the main yoga day event which was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the run-up to the finale slated for Saturday, the Department of Ayush, in association with various stakeholders including the Federation of Yoga Associations, had a 21-day pre-event activities to encourage people to take part in the event and take to yoga on a regular basis for physical and mental well-being.

Centre picks 8 heritage sites in Karnataka for Yoga Day celebrations

Bengaluru: Celebrating the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) Saturday at 100 tourist-based iconic destinations across the country, the Union ministry of culture has chosen eight places in Karnataka. The celebrations will be held simultaneously at these locations along with the main ones at Vishakhapatnam, where PM Narendra Modi will take part. The eight locations in Karnataka are the premises of Durga temple at Aihole, front elevation of Badami caves, premises of Gol Gumbaz at Vijayapura, Halebidu, elephant's stable at Hampi, front elevation of Pattadakal Temples, Tipu Sultan's palace in Bengaluru and the fort premises at Srirangapatna. All the sites are under the jurisdiction of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), according to an official release by the Centre.
