Guwahati: Assam chief minister on Thursday distributed appointment letters to 481 candidates in the animal husbandry and veterinary, tourism, and education departments. About another 40,000 appointments in the offing and will be distributed in a single recruitment drive scheduled for Oct 10. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With the inclusion of these 481 appointments, the total number of govt jobs secured under the present administration now stands at 1,20,840. Speaking on the occasion, Sarma expressed confidence that the state govt is well on course to reach a total of 1.60 lakh appointments by 10 Oct and emphasised that the transparent nature of this recruitment process has not only upheld merit, but also played a vital role in fostering a more robust educational ecosystem across the state. He said the animal husbandry sector has increasingly become a pillar of the rural economy, but Assam still lags behind other states in fully realising its potential. "To address this, the govt has partnered with the National Dairy Development Board to establish the North East Dairy and Foods Limited, which aims at producing, processing, and distributing 10 lakh litres of milk daily," he said. He added that the College of Veterinary Science, in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board, is working to develop a new breed by crossbreeding Assam's indigenous Lakhimi cows with Gujarat's high-yielding Gir breed. Alongside livestock development, the chief minister emphasised the state's renewed focus on poultry and duck farming, noting that 90% of Assam's daily egg demand is currently met through imports. He also highlighted a national campaign to promote biogas and bio-CNG production, adding that efforts are underway to enable dairy enterprises to generate these from cattle dung — an initiative poised to offer farmers a valuable supplementary income stream. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With a marked rise in both religious and nature-based tourism, Sarma underscored the sector's economic significance and called for greater innovation to enhance its appeal. Citing Dima Hasao's natural splendour, he said that the region has the potential to emerge as one of the country's premier tourist destinations. To this end, he added, govt has sanctioned Rs 4,000 crores for road and infrastructure development.

Sanchi brand 'decline' after NDDB merger: Jitu Patwari
HighlightsCongress state unit chief Jitu Patwari has raised concerns about the decline of Madhya Pradesh's flagship dairy brand 'Sanchi' following its merger with the National Dairy Development Board. Patwari reported a drop in milk collection by the Madhya Pradesh State Cooperative Dairy Federation, stating that total milk collection from Indore decreased from 94,496 kilograms in 2023-24 to 85,438 kilograms in 2024-25. He urged Union Home and Cooperative Minister Amit Shah to take action to revitalize the 'Sanchi' brand and improve the conditions for milk-producing farmers affected by government neglect. Congress state unit chief Jitu Patwari has written to Union home and cooperative minister Amit Shah, raising alarm over what he termed the rapid decline of the state's flagship dairy brand 'Sanchi' following its merger with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). In a letter to Shah, he said the merger has neither benefited consumers of Sanchi products nor the farmers supplying milk to the MP State Cooperative Dairy Federation. He accused the state govt of neglecting the brand. Patwari wrote at the time of merger, CM Mohan Yadav had announced that the share of MP in overall milk production of the country would be raised from 9 per cent to 20 per cent and "you, too, had given direction to the MP govt to take the target seriously". The Congress leader, however, regretted that it has turned out to be an 'airy' target while the situation on the ground is just the opposite. Patwari claimed that the milk collection by the federation has in fact declined. While the total milk collection from Indore was 94,496 Kg in 2023-24, it reduced to 85,438 Kg in 2024-25. Similarly, the sale of milk has also dipped from 1.56 lakh litre to 1.51 litre. The committees of milk producing farmers also reduced from 385 to 362. The 'Sanchi Parlour' scheme, too, was in a bad shape as 257 applications for setting up a parlour are pending in Indore division itself. Only 57 of them have been accepted and only 31 have opened. In Indore city , 74 applications are pending and only 1 has been accepted. The 'neglect' of Sanchi brand by the govt has "obliquely promoted the private milk brands and they have launched milk and several milk products in the market. It's not only damaging the brand value of 'Sanchi' but also leading to 'exploitation' of milk-producing farmers", he said. Patwari alleged that the milk-producing farmers in place of getting remunerative prices for the milk and becoming economically self-sufficient are being driven into economic crisis due to neglect by the state government and bureaucracy. While stating that as cooperative minister, Shah was supposed to strengthen the cooperative bodies all over the country, Patwari said he should not "mutely see a historic cooperative movement like 'Sanchi' go to ruins". He also suggested steps to the union cooperative minister to improve the 'Sanchi brand including formation of an independent panel to examine the actual state of affairs at MP Milk Federation, disposal of application for setting up of 'Sanchi' parlour all over the state in a time-bound manner, review the role of NDDB in collection of milk, its price determination and its distribution network and make the entire process transparent. Besides, the government should be asked to explain why the milk production is not increasing despite announcement of the chief minister, Patwari said. He urged the union cooperative minister to "save" Sanchi brand from decline in the overall interest of the country's cooperative movement.

Ranchi: Jharkhand would soon be able to produce surplus milk and sell it outside the state, chief minister Hemant Soren said while inaugurating the the state's first milk powder generation plant on the Medha Diary premises at Hotwar here. Inaugurating the plant jointly with Hemant, state agriculture, dairy and animal husbandry department minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey also said the new plant would mean a new chapter in Jharkhand's 'White Revolution' making its dependence on Assam and Chhattisgarh for converting excess milk into milk powder end. T he powder plant will have a capacity of 20 MT per day and will be constructed at a total cost of Rs 80 crore. Hemant also laid the foundation for a silage plant in Nagri, Ranchi, which will use leftover fruit and vegetable residues from the Mother Dairy complex to produce feeds for animals. It will not only provide an additional source of income for the state's farmers but also serve as a nutritious option for animals throughout the year. Additionally, the CM unveiled the 'Medha Ragi Laddu', organic fertilizer 'Medha Sudhan', and a distributor app developed by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) on the occasion. Addressing a function on the occasion attended by 2,000 dairy farmers, Hemant said Medha dairy is among the priority sectors of the govt to augment farmers' income, and put the state on the development map. "The way we are progressing, our state will not just be able to become self-sufficient in the next five to seven years, but will also be in a position to become a surplus milk-producing state." He appealed to the farmers to help protect the environment. The chief minister further said, "Commercial agriculture is the need of the hour. Special attention must be given to increasing the value addition of agricultural products. Our govt is supporting farmers through various means." On a lighter note, Hemant said, "If cricketing icon M S Dhoni can do farming, why can't others?" He also said, "Despite all challenges, our govt is making continuous efforts to promote agriculture and animal husbandry. We are taking concrete steps to make the state self-sufficient in the production of milk, fish and meat among others. The govt is preparing a work plan to enhance milk collection activities." Agriculture minister Tirkey added, "Today marks a special day for Jharkhand as a new chapter in the field of the White Revolution began. Until now, the state had to rely on states like Assam and Chhattisgarh to convert excess milk into milk powder. Now, the milk collected at the Medha plant complex can be easily converted into milk powder." A year after the formation of the state, the Jharkhand Cooperative Milk Federation Limited (JMF), tied with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to boost milk production. In the last decade, JMF strengthened its milk collection, processing and marketing system by establishing state-of-the-art dairy plants with a capacity of 1,00,000 litres per day in Ranchi, and 50,000 litres per day each in Sarath (Deoghar), Sahebganj, and Palamu. JMF has paid Rs 1,500 crore to milk producers in the state directly into their bank accounts. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !

Mother Dairy hikes milk prices by up to ₹2 per litre, effective April 30
Mother Dairy on Tuesday raised milk prices by up to ₹2 per litre, effective Wednesday, April 30, according to news agency PTI. Mother Dairy, a subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board, sources milk from 10 lakh farmers across 12 states and sells through 4 lakh retail outlets across India. The raise came just a month after the company launched 'Promilk', a high-protein milk product aimed at tackling India's widespread protein deficiency, particularly in the Delhi-NCR region. Priced at ₹70 per litre, the new cow milk variant delivers 40 grams of protein per litre, contains 4 per cent fat and 11.5 per cent SNF (solids-not-fat), and is fortified with vitamins A and D. It will be sold in 500 ml and 1-litre packs via both online and offline retail stores from Thursday. At the launch, Mother Dairy Managing Director Manish Bandlish said the new product is designed to meet nutritional needs in a country where "70-80 per cent of Indians struggle to meet daily protein requirements, with 93 per cent unaware of their nutritional needs." 'Protein is a vital part of a balanced diet,' Bandlish said, highlighting that Promilk delivers 30 per cent more protein than regular milk while keeping the taste familiar. The company aims to begin with 50,000 litres per day and is considering expanding beyond Delhi-NCR based on initial consumer response. Within three months, it also plans to roll out more 'Pro' range offerings like high-protein curd and paneer. (With PTI inputs)
