J'khand will produce surplus milk in 5 to 7 years: Hemant

Time of India06-06-2025

Ranchi: Jharkhand would soon be able to produce surplus milk and sell it outside the state, chief minister Hemant Soren said while inaugurating the the state's first milk powder generation plant on the Medha Diary premises at Hotwar here.
Inaugurating the plant jointly with Hemant, state agriculture, dairy and animal husbandry department minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey also said the new plant would mean a new chapter in Jharkhand's 'White Revolution' making its dependence on Assam and Chhattisgarh for converting excess milk into milk powder end.
T
he powder plant will have a capacity of 20 MT per day and will be constructed at a total cost of Rs 80 crore.
Hemant also laid the foundation for a silage plant in Nagri, Ranchi, which will use leftover fruit and vegetable residues from the Mother Dairy complex to produce feeds for animals. It will not only provide an additional source of income for the state's farmers but also serve as a nutritious option for animals throughout the year. Additionally, the CM unveiled the 'Medha Ragi Laddu', organic fertilizer 'Medha Sudhan', and a distributor app developed by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) on the occasion.
Addressing a function on the occasion attended by 2,000 dairy farmers, Hemant said Medha dairy is among the priority sectors of the govt to augment farmers' income, and put the state on the development map. "The way we are progressing, our state will not just be able to become self-sufficient in the next five to seven years, but will also be in a position to become a surplus milk-producing state."
He appealed to the farmers to help protect the environment.
The chief minister further said, "Commercial agriculture is the need of the hour. Special attention must be given to increasing the value addition of agricultural products. Our govt is supporting farmers through various means."
On a lighter note, Hemant said, "If cricketing icon M S Dhoni can do farming, why can't others?"
He also said, "Despite all challenges, our govt is making continuous efforts to promote agriculture and animal husbandry.
We are taking concrete steps to make the state self-sufficient in the production of milk, fish and meat among others. The govt is preparing a work plan to enhance milk collection activities."
Agriculture minister Tirkey added, "Today marks a special day for Jharkhand as a new chapter in the field of the White Revolution began. Until now, the state had to rely on states like Assam and Chhattisgarh to convert excess milk into milk powder.
Now, the milk collected at the Medha plant complex can be easily converted into milk powder."
A year after the formation of the state, the Jharkhand Cooperative Milk Federation Limited (JMF), tied with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to boost milk production. In the last decade, JMF strengthened its milk collection, processing and marketing system by establishing state-of-the-art dairy plants with a capacity of 1,00,000 litres per day in Ranchi, and 50,000 litres per day each in Sarath (Deoghar), Sahebganj, and Palamu.
JMF has paid Rs 1,500 crore to milk producers in the state directly into their bank accounts.

Centre flags possible tax evasion as Indian funds in Swiss banks triple to Rs 38,000 crore

Amid reports that Indian funds in Swiss banks tripled to Rs 38,000 crore in 2024, the Centre said it is closely monitoring possible tax evasion, leveraging various information exchange mechanisms with Switzerland on foreign assets and income. In a statement issued on Friday, the finance ministry said that India regularly receives information about such foreign accounts and assets from 100+ tax jurisdictions, including Switzerland. It further said that Switzerland has been providing annual financial information about Indian residents since 2018 under the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) framework. The first data transmission to Indian authorities occurred in September 2019, and the exchange has continued regularly since then, covering even those accounts suspected of involvement in financial irregularities. According to a Swiss National Bank report, money parked by Indians in Swiss banks more than tripled in 2024, reaching 3.54 billion Swiss francs, or Rs 37,600 crore. Elaborating the mechanism to check tax evasion, the finance ministry has said that the tax department regularly undertakes a systematic review of data so received and identifies taxpayers, whose cases require further verification.

Govt to set up cooperative insurance firm, two lakh new PACS: Union Minister Shah

Mumbai: Union Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah on Friday said that the cooperation ministry has taken a slew of decisions to transform the cooperative sector across the country. He announced that the government will establish a cooperative insurance company to facilitate insurance services within the cooperative sector and it will open up various new opportunities. The new entity is expected to provide tailored insurance solutions for cooperative institutions, ensuring better risk coverage and financial security. In addition, two lakh Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) will be established, which will lead to their presence in every panchayat. The new PACS will be multidimensional and they will be able to do 22 different activities. "Apart from the present work of providing primary agricultural funds, PACS will do various works including running a petrol pump, undertake gas distribution, conduct maintenance under the 'Har Ghar Nal Se Jal Yojana', and do railway and air ticket bookings," he said. In his speech at the conference organised by NAFED, Union Minister Shah said that of the 71,000 PACS, nearly 52,000 have become live due to computerisation and related initiatives. He announced that the foundation laying of the Tribhuvan Sahkari University, which will work at the national level, will take place by August. 'Cooperation may be a system for the whole world, but for India, cooperation is the philosophy of our traditional way of life. Coming together, thinking together, working together towards a common goal, standing by each other in joy and sorrow — this is the soul of India's philosophy of life. "Whether it's the purchase of farmers' grains at MSP across the country or providing every poor person with 5 kilos of free grains under PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, NCCF and NAFED play a crucial role in all these initiatives," he said. He added that to make the cooperative movement stronger, the government has prepared a database which will also be available at the state Registrar level. He said that to empower taxi drivers and promote cooperative entrepreneurship, Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited has been officially registered. Under the Sahakar Taxi structure, cab drivers will be direct members and co-owners as this model allows for equitable profit sharing, democratic governance, and ensures that the benefits of the platform flow directly to those who run it. Moreover, Union Minister Shah said that the government has taken a number of decisions to provide relief to the cooperative sector in the income tax regime. He added that the Centre has waived income tax worth Rs 15,000 crore payable by the cooperative sugar factories in Maharashtra and come out with a permanent solution to provide them relief.

Mark Zuckerberg made abortive attempt to buy ex-OpenAI executive Ilya Sutskever's AI startup: Report Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Meta Meta's $14.2 billion recent investment in Scale AI, and roping in its CEO Alexandr Wang, appears to be just the beginning. Mark Zuckerberg seems to be on a man on a mission: to recruit top AI talent, and reports suggest he made a move for one of the sector's most-talked-about startups. Driving the news: According to CNBC , Zuckerberg tried to acquire Safe Superintelligence, the $32 billion startup founded by former OpenAI cofounder Ilya Sutskever. The talks didn't go far, with Sutskever reportedly turning him down. Meta then shifted focus to poaching CEO Daniel Gross for its AI team. High-stakes game: Zuckerberg is spearheading an ambitious effort to build a 'superintelligence' team focused on developing artificial general intelligence (AGI), the elusive frontier where AI not only matches but surpasses human capabilities. Inside Meta, there is growing frustration with the sluggish progress of its current efforts, particularly the limitations of the Llama 4 models. Eager not to be left behind, Zuckerberg is setting his sights on outpacing OpenAI and Google in the AGI race. Tell me more: The Meta CEO is assembling a handpicked team of 50 researchers, including a new head of AI, and has held private meetings with potential hires at his homes. Details: The app blends human concierges with generative AI to help users plan trips, offering more than just itinerary suggestions. Last year, ahead of its IPO, Swiggy tested a similar service, Rare Life, a personalised concierge service for exclusive experiences. That experiment was short-lived, as the company decided to focus on broader lifestyle offerings instead. What's the significance: Crew is part of Swiggy's latest push beyond food delivery, dining out, and quick commerce. In January, it launched Pyng, a professional services marketplace. This signals a departure from Swiggy's earlier 'superapp' strategy. Instead of integrating all services under one platform, Swiggy has started offering standalone apps. Instamart, its quick commerce unit, got a dedicated app earlier this year. Background: In May, the company shut down its parcel delivery service, Genie, opting instead to focus on Bolt, its rapid food delivery feature now available in 500 cities. As food delivery growth tapers off, Swiggy and rival Zomato are betting on 10-minute orders to regain momentum.
