Lebanon's General Security allows departure of foreigners with expired residency without penalties
The General Directorate of General Security has announced that, starting June 13, 2025, Arabs and foreigners whose residency permits—of any type (transit, annual, temporary, etc.)—have expired will be allowed to depart through Beirut's Rafic Hariri International Airport free of charge, without incurring late penalties and without the need to present a clearance from the Ministry of Labor for those holding work permits. Their status will be regularized at the General Security Office at Rafic Hariri International Airport, provided they present proof of a travel ticket reservation in their name during the flight suspension period, with no measures taken against them.

Car bomb in Syria kills at least 3 police officers
Published May 19th, 2025 - 04:39 GMT ALBAWABA - At least three policemen died after a car explosion near a police station in eastern Syria on Sunday, Local media reported. State news agency SANA added that another two officers were injured in the blast, which took place next to the police station in the city of Al-Mayadeen in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor. Khalil Abdulmoneim al-Ayoub, director of Al-Mayadeen city detailed that the car explosion happened at exactly 07:13 pm local time on Sunday. "Initial investigations and an inspection of the site revealed that it was caused by a car bomb, resulting in the deaths of three members of the General Security and a number of injuries," al-Ayoub said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said five people had been killed in the blast, including four police officers. "Three police officers were martyred and two others were injured in an explosion that occurred today near the police station in the city of Al-Mayadeen in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor," SANA reported. "At exactly 07:13 pm (1603 GMT) today, an explosion occurred near the Al-Mayadeen police station," Khalil Abdulmoneim al-Ayoub, director of Al-Mayadeen city, said in the report. "Initial investigations and an inspection of the site revealed that it was caused by a car bomb, resulting in the deaths of three members of the General Security and a number of injuries," he said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said five people had been killed in the blast, including four police officers. "Two civilians, including a girl, were injured," it said. According to the war monitor, the explosion coincided with the launch of a security campaign in Al-Mayadeen by the General Security, the country's new police force.

Booby-trapped vehicle kills three Syrian police officers near Iraqi border
Shafaq News/ A booby-trapped car exploded near a police station in al-Mayadeen in Syria's Deir ez-Zor province, state media reported on Sunday. The blast occurred near the General Security headquarters in the city, which lies close to the Iraqi border, killing three officers and injuring several others. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Khalil Abdul-Moneim al-Ayoub, the city's administrative director, stated that security forces secured the site and imposed a temporary curfew as investigations began. Al-Mayadeen sits along the Euphrates River and remains a hotspot for insurgent attacks. While parts of Syria have stabilized, Deir ez-Zor continues to witness periodic bombings and ambushes, particularly by suspected ISIS remnants operating in eastern Syria and adjacent desert regions.

At least three killed as Syrian forces raid ISIL hideouts in Aleppo
Syrian security forces have killed three ISIL (ISIS) fighters and arrested four others in Aleppo, authorities said, the first time the interim government has announced such an operation against the group in Syria's second city. The raids, launched by the General Security Department in coordination with the General Intelligence Service, targeted multiple ISIL sleeper cells operating across Aleppo, Syria's Ministry of Interior said in a statement on Saturday. One security officer was killed in the operation, it said. Forces stormed the site and seized 'explosive devices, an explosive vest and a number of General Security force uniforms', the statement added. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the operation took place in Aleppo's Haidariya district and that clashes also broke out in another neighbourhood. Interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who assumed power in Damascus in December, has long opposed ISIL. His forces battled the group's self-declared caliphate during the Syrian war. US President Donald Trump met al-Sharaa this week in Saudi Arabia and described him as an 'attractive guy with a very strong past'. Following the meeting, Washington announced that it would lift sanctions on Syria – a major policy shift and boost for al-Sharaa's transitional government. Al-Sharaa seized power in Damascus in December after his forces toppled Bashar al-Assad in a lightning offensive. Al-Sharaa cut ties with al-Qaeda in 2016. The recent operation comes just months after Syrian authorities said they had foiled an ISIL bombing plot near the Sayeda Zeinab shrine, a key pilgrimage site for Shia Muslims south of Damascus.
