Top drug lord and Assad cousin arrested in Damascus sting operation
ALBAWABA - An official statement made Saturday says that Wasim al-Assad, a cousin of the former President Bashar al-Assad, was arrested by Syrian intelligence forces working with the Ministry of Interior in what was called a "tightly planned ambush." Also Read Iran hacks Israeli home security cameras in intelligence operation The Ministry said that al-Assad was captured as part of a larger effort to bring justice to the people of Syria and break up criminal networks that were still active during the Assad era. Al-Assad was long thought to be one of the country's most notorious drug traffickers and a key figure in a number of serious crimes that happened while the regime was in power. Al-Assad was being watched closely by the rest of the world. In 2023, both the U.S. Treasury and the European Union put sanctions on him because he was part of a large-scale drug dealing network in the area that helped pay for the former government. In addition to his work in the drug trade, Wasim al-Assad was in charge of a militia group in the coastal city of Latakia. This group was accused of many crimes against citizens, such as putting down large protests in the early years of the Syrian uprising. In the days before the government fell on December 8, 2024, al-Assad wrote on Facebook that armed support units would be formed in Latakia and the nearby areas to help the military. This showed how actively he was involved in helping the regime in its last days. After Bashar al-Assad's government fell, the Syrian government began a national crackdown on people they thought were guilty of war crimes, corruption, and power abuses. People think that the arrest of Wasim al-Assad was a big step forward in that effort.

Israeli forces raid Syrian village near Damascus, kill civilian in new cross-border escalation
ALBAWABA- Syrian Interior Ministry officials have accused Israeli forces of launching a cross-border incursion into the village of Beit Jann, located in the Damascus countryside, on Thursday. Also Read Syria thwarts missile smuggling to Lebanon According to Syrian authorities, an Israeli military unit, including tanks, armored personnel carriers, and other vehicles, entered the area, carried out a series of raids, and arrested seven individuals. One civilian was reportedly killed by Israeli gunfire during the operation. The Syrian government condemned the incursion as a flagrant violation of Syrian sovereignty and international law, describing it as part of a broader pattern of Israeli military escalation inside Syrian territory. Since the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024, Israeli forces have intensified ground operations and airstrikes across southern Syria, especially in regions beyond the occupied Golan Heights, including Jabal al-Sheikh and Daraa. Also Read Israeli FM to Macron: 'put Palestine in France' These strikes have targeted military sites, key infrastructure, and urban areas, drawing fierce criticism from Damascus and its allies. An anonymous Syrian official accused Western powers, particularly the United States, of enabling what they call Israel's 'hegemonic campaign' in the region. The mounting cross-border pressure, they warn, is pushing the Middle East further toward instability.
