3 persons arrested for illegal gun sale in Makati

The Southern Police District (SPD) on Tuesday said three persons, including a 'media practitioner,' were arrested in an entrapment operation against the illegal sale of firearms in front of an apartelle in Makati City on Monday. In a statement, the SPD identified the suspects as 26-year-old ''Patrick,'' 52-year-old ''Rodrigo,'' and 52-year-old ''Gaynor,'' who is allegedly a media practitioner. The operation was launched after an informant reported about the illegal activities of Patrick and his cohorts within the National Capital Region. The SPD said that among the items seized from the suspects were firearms, gun registration cards, vehicles, live ammunition, press credentials, and phones. The suspects and the seized items were brought to SPD's District Special Operation Unit for documentation and for filing of complaints for violations of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act as well as the election gun ban. 'These unlicensed weapons are more than just contraband—they are tools of violence that empower criminal elements, endanger innocent lives, and undermine public safety. Every firearm taken off the streets is a step toward a safer environment for our families and communities,' SPD acting chief Police Brigadier General Joseph Arguelles said. — Joviland Rita/VBL, GMA Integrated News

Passenger arrested at Tacloban Airport for carrying submachine gun replica amid election gun ban

A Manila-bound traveler was arrested at Tacloban City Airport after authorities discovered a replica of a submachine gun in his luggage, the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEG) reported. The passenger was stopped from boarding and taken into custody during routine screening, which revealed a replica of a Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun with a magazine in his bag. Authorities said the incident violated Republic Act No. 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, in connection with Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution No. 11067. The nationwide gun ban, which started on January 12 and will run through June 11, 2025, prohibits the transport of firearms and deadly weapons—including toy guns and replicas—during the election period. The Department of Transportation's Office for Transportation Security also includes replicas and toy firearms in its list of banned items. Passengers may face arrest or offloading even outside the gun ban period if found carrying such items. 'This is part of our commitment to keep every passenger and flight safe. We remind the public to always inspect their baggage for prohibited items before traveling,' said PNP-AVSEG Director Police Brigadier General Christopher Abecia.

Tacloban airport passenger nabbed for violating gun ban

A Manila-bound passenger was arrested in Tacloban City Airport for allegedly carrying a replica of a submachine gun in his luggage amid the ongoing election gun ban. According to the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEG) on Saturday, the passenger was prohibited from boarding his flight and was nabbed after a routine screening at the airport found in his baggage a replica of a Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun, complete with a magazine. The PNP-AVSEG noted that this was a violation of Republic Act No. 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, in relation to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution No. 11067. The nationwide gun ban took effect on January 12, coinciding with the start of the election period, and will continue until June 11, 2025. During this period, the PNP-AVSEG emphasized that the transport of firearms and deadly weapons, including replicas and toy guns, is strictly prohibited. Toy guns and replicas are included in the list of prohibited items by the Department of Transportation's Office for Transportation Security. Possession of such items may still also result in being offloaded or arrested even outside the Comelec gun ban period, it added. 'The implementation of these measures is part of our duty to ensure the safety and security of every passenger and flight nationwide. We urge the public to always check their baggage for prohibited items before traveling to avoid inconvenience,' PNP-AVSEG director Police Brigadier General Christopher Abecia said in a statement. —Giselle Ombay/RF, GMA Integrated News
