Tacloban airport passenger nabbed for violating gun ban
A Manila-bound passenger was arrested in Tacloban City Airport for allegedly carrying a replica of a submachine gun in his luggage amid the ongoing election gun ban.
According to the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEG) on Saturday, the passenger was prohibited from boarding his flight and was nabbed after a routine screening at the airport found in his baggage a replica of a Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun, complete with a magazine.
The PNP-AVSEG noted that this was a violation of Republic Act No. 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, in relation to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution No. 11067.
The nationwide gun ban took effect on January 12, coinciding with the start of the election period, and will continue until June 11, 2025.
During this period, the PNP-AVSEG emphasized that the transport of firearms and deadly weapons, including replicas and toy guns, is strictly prohibited.
Toy guns and replicas are included in the list of prohibited items by the Department of Transportation's Office for Transportation Security.
Possession of such items may still also result in being offloaded or arrested even outside the Comelec gun ban period, it added.
'The implementation of these measures is part of our duty to ensure the safety and security of every passenger and flight nationwide. We urge the public to always check their baggage for prohibited items before traveling to avoid inconvenience,' PNP-AVSEG director Police Brigadier General Christopher Abecia said in a statement. —Giselle Ombay/RF, GMA Integrated News

DA, PNP boost anti-smuggling campaign
The Department of Agriculture (DA) is intensifying its anti-smuggling campaign after discovering the sale of suspected smuggled onions in Paco Market in Manila. On Wednesday, Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. said the DA will partner with the Philippine National Police (PNP) for the crackdown against smuggled agricultural products they discovered smuggled onions being sold in the market. The imported red onions are larger and cleaner than local varieties. It also surfaced in markets despite the absence of import permits, he added. 'We did not give any permits to anybody since early this year. Lahat ng imported onions sa lahat ng palengke ay smuggled iyan,' said Laurel Jr. 'It's the directive of President Bongbong Marcos to stop smuggling—that's why we now have this law,' he said. The DA will conduct lab testing of seized onions to ensure they are not a public health threat. Previous inspections found traces of E. coli and heavy metals in smuggled white onions. 'But of course, our target remains the so-called 'big fish.' We will raid warehouses with the help of the PNP,' said Tiu Laurel. Meanwhile, the DA said they are also eyeing to train police officers to distinguish between locally produced and imported agricultural products, including pork, as part of efforts to strengthen the government's anti-smuggling campaign. DMW issues deployment ban on new hires for Iran, Jordan amid conflict with Israel
The Department of Migrant Workers has implemented a deployment ban on new hires for Iran and Jordan amid ongoing hostilities in the Middle East. 'New hires are prohibited. Returning [Overseas Filipino Workers] are allowed, technically speaking. But they still can't travel because the airspace is closed,' DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac said in a press conference on Thursday. The DMW issued Advisory No. 19 s. 2025 reiterating restrictions in the deployment of OFWs to Israel, Iran, Jordan, and Lebanon. Cacdac advised Jordan-bound OFWs to likewise postpone their trips, given the kingdom shares a common border with Israel. 'The same is true with Jordan-bound OFWs, they are turned back. So we issued an advisory, huwag na kayo pumunta muna. We included that in our advisory to recruitment agencies. Don't send new hires to Jordan because they will just be turned back,' Cacdac added. (Don't go there at this time.) There is an existing deployment ban in Israel in the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas attacks against Israel in 2023. Cacdac warned that non-compliant recruitment agencies will be held liable. 'That's part of our regulatory authority over them. When we speak in a regulatory sense, then they have to comply. And yes, on the cost of travel, we'll have them pay for that,' Cacdac said. As of Thursday, Cacdac said that there are also 58 Filipinos who are either Israel-bound or Jordan-bound but are stranded in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Of the 58, the DMW has been able to arrange a flight for four Israel-bound Filipinos to return to the Philippines via an Etihad flight in Abu Dhabi. 'We have been helping them,' Cacdac said. While it is not within DMW's purview to make recommendations on alert levels that determine whether there should be a mandatory repatriation or a voluntary one, Cacdac said the agency is focused on helping Filipinos in need, regardless of the situation. 'The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) officials are the political and security experts. We honor their leadership at the one country team level so it is the ambassador's call, it is the Secretary of Foreign Affairs' call , and we will always defer to the DFA's judgment,' Cacdac said. Comelec disqualifies Anarna as Silang, Cavite mayor
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc has disqualified and annulled the proclamation of Alston Kevin Anarna as mayor of Silang, Cavite in Eleksyon 2025. This developed after the poll body en banc granted a motion for reconsideration (MR) filed by former Silang Mayor Ted Carranza, which seeks to reverse a ruling of the Comelec First Division, dismissing the petition for disqualification he lodged against Anarna. Carranza filed the disqualification petition on the grounds of a October 2024 decision of the Ombudsman, dismissing Anarna from public office for grave misconduct and serious dishonesty. It also perpetually disqualified him from holding public office. In his MR, the former mayor prayed for the reversal of the assailed order, explaining he failed to copy furnish the respondent with the copy of the petition due to inadvertence of the firm's newly hired personnel. Carranza also argued the Comelec can motu proprio bar a candidate suffering from perpetual disqualification and delist as a candidate of the May midterm polls. 'To permit a candidate who is administratively disqualified to run for office would render the constitutional and statutory sanctions imposed by the Ombudsman inutile, effectively frustrating the ends of administrative discipline and making a mockery of the electoral process,' the five-page decision reads. 'It bears emphasis that Comelec, as a constitutional commission, is duty-bound to protect the sanctity of elections and ensure that only qualified and eligible individuals are allowed to run for public office,' it added. The Comelec en banc ordered the disqualification and voiding of Anarna's proclamation and directed the votes cast in his favor to be considered as stray. It also instructed the Municipal Board of Canvassers to reconvene and proclaim the winning candidate. 'Gross violation of constitutional right' Lawyer Emil Marañon, legal counsel of Anarna, said their camp will file a petition for certiorari with the Supreme Court (SC) to reverse the decision, which he said is a 'gross violation' of this constitutional right to due process of Anarna. Marañon said their camp allegedly did not receive any notice of the suit, summon, and answer from the Comelec. 'This is of course not only vulgarly illegal, but a gross violation of the constitutional right to due process of Mayor Anarna. In fact, this procedural travesty has never ever happened in the history of the Comelec,' he said. 'That while we are still in the process of studying this case, it appears that the case has been based on the equally erroneous Joint Decision of the Office of the Ombudsman dated October 9, 2024 in the consolidated cases docketed as OMB-C-A-APR-24-0025, OMB-C-A-APR-24-0026 and OMB-C-A-JUN-24-0053 which remains non-final to this day, and still pending resolution before the Court of Appeals. Obviously, candidates can be 'disqualified' only on the basis of a final decision,' said Marañon.
