Nilambur bypoll: P.V. Anvar kicks up fresh row by refusing to embrace UDF candidate Shoukath on poll day
P.V. Anvar, All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) Kerala State convener who is contesting the byelection in Nilambur as an Independent, kicked up a row by refusing to embrace United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Aryadan Shoukath when they met at a polling station at Nilambur on Thursday (June 19, 2025) morning. Mr. Shoukath walked up to Mr. Anvar and shook hands with him when they met. However, Mr. Anvar warned Mr. Shoukath not to embrace him. 'Because I feared it will be a Dhritarashtra embrace,' Mr. Anvar told the media later referring to devastating hugging of Dhritarashtra in the Mahabharata. Mr. Anvar clarified why he refused to embrace and why he warned Mr. Shoukath not to embrace him. 'He (Mr. Shoukath) is someone who embraces everyone. I don't want that. I don't want that Dhritarashtra embrace.' Mr. Anvar also described Mr. Shoukath as 'an actor.' 'You see what happened when two actors met,' he said referring to Mr. Shoukath embracing Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate M. Swaraj when they met. Addressing the media earlier, Mr. Anvar said he would garner more than 75,000 votes. He said he would wrest 35% to 40% votes from the LDF and 25% from the UDF. He blamed both UDF and LDF candidates for ignoring the real issues of Nilambur and its people. He said Mr. Shoukath was still in his 'filmy world' and that he would have to 'continue storywriting' after the elections. 'You cannot hoodwink the people of Nilambur with your fashion parade,' he said referring to Mr. Shoukath. Mr. Anvar said he was preparing to walk up to Thiruvananthapuram along with his followers to take oath after victory in the byelection.

Nilambur bypoll: Anvar seeks donations for campaign fund
Kozhikode: Former Nilambur MLA and independent candidate PV Anvar, who has declared assets worth Rs 52 crore in his election affidavit, launched a crowd funding campaign seeking donations from voters of Nilambur saying that he was facing a financial crisis. In a Facebook video posted on Friday, Anvar said that despite owning property worth crores, he was unable to sell even a cent as all his assets were entangled in an "excess land" case. "I have not done any election preparation due to the financial crunch. I am now launching a crowdfunding initiative and urge everyone to contribute, even Rs 1 or Rs 10 as a token of moral support," he said, adding that donor details would be kept confidential. Meanwhile, Left councillor in Nilambur municipality and JDS national council member Ismail Eranjikkal joined the All India Trinamool Congress, extending support to independent candidate PV Anvar. He said that Anvar was the only candidate who was raising the genuine issues of the people of the constituency. Ismail said that he was leaving the JDS as the party was in alliance with BJP at the national level while it was part of the LDF in the state with power minister K Krishnankutty representing the party in the cabinet. Anvar continues tirade against Satheesan
All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) State convener P.V. Anvar continued his tirade against United Democratic Front (UDF) chairman V.D. Satheesan on Thursday (June 5), reiterating that the UDF would not win the Nilambur byelection as long as Mr. Satheesan remained at the helm. He said 'two Pinarayi Vijayans' were facing the election in Nilambur. 'Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate M. Swaraj is the spokesperson of Pinarayism, and the UDF candidate is a supporter of Pinarayism,' he added. Mr. Anvar credited himself with highlighting the problems and sufferings of the settler farmer communities living in the hills of Kerala, particularly Nilambur. Anvar claimed he was convinced by the people of Nilambur to enter the fray. 'Unlike transient politicians, I will stay with the ordinary people of Nilambur. That is why they want me by their side,' he said.

Nilambur scene turns murkier as Anvar prepares to contest
The electoral scene in Nilambur Assembly constituency, which goes to the polls on June 19, turned murkier with All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) State convener P.V. Anvar changing his stance and deciding to contest. Sources close to Mr. Anvar said that he would be contesting under the AITC banner. However, some others indicated that Mr. Anvar's move would be the last-ditch effort to pressure the United Democratic Front (UDF). UDF chairman and Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said that there would not be any more talks with Mr. Anvar. 'We have closed all doors of discussion as Mr. Anvar stuck to his stand of opposing the UDF candidate in Nilambur,' said Mr. Satheesan. However, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph said that the doors were closed for the time being. 'No doors are permanently closed in politics,' he said. Mr. Joseph said that the electoral battle in Nilambur would be completely political, and not personal. He said the UDF would win comfortably even if Mr. Anvar contests. 'Nilambur is going to be an anti-Government verdict,' he said. Youth Congress State president Rahul Mamkootathil, MLA, visited Mr. Anvar at his Edavanna house on Saturday (May 31, 2025) night and persuaded him to change his stand. Mr. Mamkootathil said that he had requested Mr. Anvar not to take any decision emotionally. Rather, he said, Mr. Anvar should support the UDF in the fight against Pinarayism. 'I told Mr. Anvar not to miss the objective,' he said. Meanwhile, the UDF chairman described Mr. Mamkootathil's visit to Mr. Anvar as a mistake. 'The UDF did not entrust him to visit and talk to Mr. Anvar. He should not have done it,' said Mr. Satheesan. But he said the UDF would not seek any explanation from the Youth Congress chief. 'I will chastise him when I meet him. He is like my younger brother. I can do that,' said Mr. Satheesan.
