Anvar continues tirade against Satheesan

The Hindu05-06-2025

All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) State convener P.V. Anvar continued his tirade against United Democratic Front (UDF) chairman V.D. Satheesan on Thursday (June 5), reiterating that the UDF would not win the Nilambur byelection as long as Mr. Satheesan remained at the helm.
He said 'two Pinarayi Vijayans' were facing the election in Nilambur. 'Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate M. Swaraj is the spokesperson of Pinarayism, and the UDF candidate is a supporter of Pinarayism,' he added.
Mr. Anvar credited himself with highlighting the problems and sufferings of the settler farmer communities living in the hills of Kerala, particularly Nilambur.
Anvar claimed he was convinced by the people of Nilambur to enter the fray. 'Unlike transient politicians, I will stay with the ordinary people of Nilambur. That is why they want me by their side,' he said.

Enough Plus One seats in schools in State: Sivankutty

Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty has said 1,13,476 Plus One seats are vacant across the State after the main allotment process. Addressing mediapersons in Kozhikode on Saturday, he said 71,258 seats remained unfilled in the aided sector while 87,659 students had applied for the next round of allotment. There were many thousand seats vacant in the unaided sector as well. The Minister's claim comes against the backdrop of State-wide protests by UDF-affiliated organisations for more Plus One seats on the ground that the available seats were not enough to meet the Students' demand. Mr. Sivankutty spoke on various contemporary topics such as the revised mid-day meal scheme and the 'Samagra Gunamenma Padhathi' to ensure quality of education. He said the mid-day meal menu in schools was fixed based on detailed calorie calculation, cost calculation, and the availability of funds by a committee appointed for the purpose. It had found that the selected food items could be prepared within the allotted budget, the Minister said. He suggested that schools could seek the support of local bodies, CSR funds of companies, PTA, alumni and the general public to provide millet breakfast to students and that around 2,200 schools were doing so at present. Mr. Sivankutty cited the need to extend the project to more schools. He also suggested setting up vegetable gardens in schools to reduce the purchase of vegetables. The training for heads of institutions in the public sector under the 'Samagra Gunamenma Padhathi' would be completed by July 15 and the cluster-level training involving all teachers would begin by July 19, he said. 'The project aims setting a 30% cut-off mark for students in written examinations in classes 5 to 9 and training them separately to ensure that they adhere to the quality that the syllabus offers,' he said. The Minister said the government had decided to prepare special textbooks for students in schools for the hearing impaired, which would be released on June 30.

Nilambur results to be a barometer for 2026 Assembly poll

The Nilambur Assembly byelection outcome is being keenly awaited by both the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and United Democratic Front (UDF). Although the winning candidate will have a short tenure of less than a year in the Assembly, the victory will carry significant weight for both fronts and boost their morale and credibility. The Nilambur byelection is seen as a key barometer for the Assembly elections to be held in 2026. While the LDF campaigned on its four-year achievements, the UDF countered by highlighting the LDF government's perceived failures over the past nine years. The June 19 electoral battle in Nilambur was one of the most intense Kerala has witnessed in recent times, with the entire State's attention riveted on the contest. Both the UDF and LDF threw their entire political weight behind the campaign, making it a closely watched showdown. While both LDF candidate M. Swaraj and UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath, as well as their leaders and campaign managers, are claiming victory, uncertainty lingers over the margin of win. The presence of All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) State convener P.V. Anvar and the BJP's Christian candidate Mohan George in the fray have injected doubts into both camps, making it difficult for them to gauge their winning margin with confidence. In a remarkable display of civic harmony, the Nilambur byelection on Thursday passed off peacefully and incident-free, despite intense campaigning by both the UDF and LDF. Noted Islamic scholar Marutha Abdul Latheef Moulavi of the Samsthana Jamiyyathul Ulama praised Nilambur as a model for the nation, showcasing how elections can be conducted with both cordiality and competitiveness. Meanwhile, District Collector V.R. Vinod, who is the District Election Officer, has asked the political parties to remove their flags, posters and banners erected in connection with the byelection before 4 p.m. on Sunday. Counting on June 23 He has sent letters to all candidates demanding that they remove their campaign materials. The Collector's move has come in the wake of a request by the District Police Chief in connection with maintaining law and order in the constituency. The counting of votes will take place at Mar Thoma Higher Secondary School, Chungathara, on Monday morning. The voting machines from 263 booths of Nilambur constituency were shifted to a strongroom at Mar Thoma Higher Secondary School soon after the polling on Thursday night.

Poll claims fly as UDF, LDF battle it out

Kozhikode: A day after the closely-watched and politically-significant Nilambur bypoll, UDF and LDF camps pored over internal booth-level estimates collected from the field and concluded that the outcome would be a favourable one. While UDF reviewed its estimates and claimed that the front would secure a huge majority, LDF came out with a cautious estimate expecting a narrow victory margin. UDF claimed it would win by a big margin of around 10,000 votes. It expects a lead of over 4,000 votes in Vazhikkadavu, nearly the same margin in Moothedam, 1,500 votes in Edakkara and 1,000 votes each in Nilambur municipality and Pothukallu. UDF also expects small leads in Chungathara and Karulayi. On the other hand, LDF's internal feedback showed a tighter contest, projecting a narrow win margin of around 1,600 votes. Left is counting on leads in Amarambalam, Pothukallu, Nilambur municipality and Karulayi to offset UDF's expected lead of 1,500 votes in Vazhikkadavu and other narrow leads in Moothedam and Edakkara, where UDF has historically held a strong political base. LDF is also relying on internal differences and factionalism within the Congress to strengthen its position. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo What makes the race even more complex is independent candidate PV Anvar, whose resignation triggered the bypoll. Early projections from both camps estimated his vote share at 10,000 votes, but LDF sources now believe Anvar could secure well beyond that number, mainly by drawing support from UDF voters. The BJP is expected to get around 7,000 votes, while SDPI is likely to garner around 2,500 votes. For LDF and UDF, the stakes are high. Winning this bypoll will boost morale and set the tone for the upcoming local body elections and the 2026 assembly polls. Echoing UDF's estimates, candidate Aryadan Shoukath said he would win the polls with an 'A Plus grade' and secure leads in all panchayats as well as Nilambur municipality. He added that the front had gained support even from non-UDF voters and predicted a historic majority for UDF on Monday. LDF candidate M Swaraj said LDF expects a strong win in the constituency, noting that there was no anti-incumbency sentiment against the state govt there. IUML national general secretary PK Kunhalikutty said the UDF camp is confident of a comfortable win. He added that IUML has consistently worked with full commitment to secure victory for the UDF candidate. Kunhalikutty dismissed concerns that IUML votes might have shifted to Anvar, saying that even in tougher situations, IUML cadres have never taken such a stand.
