Nilambur scene turns murkier as Anvar prepares to contest
The electoral scene in Nilambur Assembly constituency, which goes to the polls on June 19, turned murkier with All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) State convener P.V. Anvar changing his stance and deciding to contest.
Sources close to Mr. Anvar said that he would be contesting under the AITC banner. However, some others indicated that Mr. Anvar's move would be the last-ditch effort to pressure the United Democratic Front (UDF).
UDF chairman and Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said that there would not be any more talks with Mr. Anvar. 'We have closed all doors of discussion as Mr. Anvar stuck to his stand of opposing the UDF candidate in Nilambur,' said Mr. Satheesan.
However, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph said that the doors were closed for the time being. 'No doors are permanently closed in politics,' he said.
Mr. Joseph said that the electoral battle in Nilambur would be completely political, and not personal. He said the UDF would win comfortably even if Mr. Anvar contests. 'Nilambur is going to be an anti-Government verdict,' he said.
Youth Congress State president Rahul Mamkootathil, MLA, visited Mr. Anvar at his Edavanna house on Saturday (May 31, 2025) night and persuaded him to change his stand.
Mr. Mamkootathil said that he had requested Mr. Anvar not to take any decision emotionally. Rather, he said, Mr. Anvar should support the UDF in the fight against Pinarayism. 'I told Mr. Anvar not to miss the objective,' he said.
Meanwhile, the UDF chairman described Mr. Mamkootathil's visit to Mr. Anvar as a mistake. 'The UDF did not entrust him to visit and talk to Mr. Anvar. He should not have done it,' said Mr. Satheesan.
But he said the UDF would not seek any explanation from the Youth Congress chief. 'I will chastise him when I meet him. He is like my younger brother. I can do that,' said Mr. Satheesan.

Poll claims fly as UDF, LDF battle it out
Kozhikode: A day after the closely-watched and politically-significant Nilambur bypoll, UDF and LDF camps pored over internal booth-level estimates collected from the field and concluded that the outcome would be a favourable one. While UDF reviewed its estimates and claimed that the front would secure a huge majority, LDF came out with a cautious estimate expecting a narrow victory margin. UDF claimed it would win by a big margin of around 10,000 votes. It expects a lead of over 4,000 votes in Vazhikkadavu, nearly the same margin in Moothedam, 1,500 votes in Edakkara and 1,000 votes each in Nilambur municipality and Pothukallu. UDF also expects small leads in Chungathara and Karulayi. On the other hand, LDF's internal feedback showed a tighter contest, projecting a narrow win margin of around 1,600 votes. Left is counting on leads in Amarambalam, Pothukallu, Nilambur municipality and Karulayi to offset UDF's expected lead of 1,500 votes in Vazhikkadavu and other narrow leads in Moothedam and Edakkara, where UDF has historically held a strong political base. Early projections from both camps estimated his vote share at 10,000 votes, but LDF sources now believe Anvar could secure well beyond that number, mainly by drawing support from UDF voters. CPI(M) says setback in Nilambur bypoll will cause UDF to ‘implode'
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has said a possible setback in the Nilambur Assembly bypoll in Kerala would cause the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance to 'implode.' CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan told reporters on Friday that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leadership had expressed annoyance at 'the ham-handed manner' in which the Congress handled the campaign, including a marked lack of tact in placating potential allies and turning them into enemies instead. He said senior Congress leaders' open criticism of the younger leadership's juvenile publicity stunts and political gimmickry exposed the deep fissures in the party. 'Their palpable bitterness foreshadowed the next bout of self-destructive factional fighting in the Congress ahead of the local body polls in 2025 and the Assembly elections in 2026', Mr. Govindan added. He said Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Shashi Tharoor, MP, complained that the State leadership willfully excluded him from the Nilambur by-poll campaign. Mr. Govindan said the CPI(M) State committee was yet to conduct a granular analysis of the voting pattern in Nilambur. 'However, the party had waged a successful political campaign in Nilambur. It fielded its candidate and used the hustings as a political platform to successfully convey the LDF's good governance and secular positioning to the electorate', he said. Slams BJP The CPI(M) State committee slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for abandoning India's storied Non-Alignment Movement (NAM)-informed foreign policy and playing second fiddle to 'the expansionary war-mongering of the Israel-U.S. axis.' Mr. Govindan said the Central government was tangibly fearful of condemning Israel's attack on Iran and its genocidal bombing campaign over Palestine, chiefly Gaza.
