Nilambur bypoll: P.V. Anvar kicks up fresh row by refusing to embrace UDF candidate Shoukath on poll day

The Hindu2 days ago

P.V. Anvar, All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) Kerala State convener who is contesting the byelection in Nilambur as an Independent, kicked up a row by refusing to embrace United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Aryadan Shoukath when they met at a polling station at Nilambur on Thursday (June 19, 2025) morning.
Mr. Shoukath walked up to Mr. Anvar and shook hands with him when they met. However, Mr. Anvar warned Mr. Shoukath not to embrace him. 'Because I feared it will be a Dhritarashtra embrace,' Mr. Anvar told the media later referring to devastating hugging of Dhritarashtra in the Mahabharata.
Mr. Anvar clarified why he refused to embrace and why he warned Mr. Shoukath not to embrace him. 'He (Mr. Shoukath) is someone who embraces everyone. I don't want that. I don't want that Dhritarashtra embrace.'
Mr. Anvar also described Mr. Shoukath as 'an actor.'
'You see what happened when two actors met,' he said referring to Mr. Shoukath embracing Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate M. Swaraj when they met.
Addressing the media earlier, Mr. Anvar said he would garner more than 75,000 votes. He said he would wrest 35% to 40% votes from the LDF and 25% from the UDF. He blamed both UDF and LDF candidates for ignoring the real issues of Nilambur and its people.
He said Mr. Shoukath was still in his 'filmy world' and that he would have to 'continue storywriting' after the elections. 'You cannot hoodwink the people of Nilambur with your fashion parade,' he said referring to Mr. Shoukath.
Mr. Anvar said he was preparing to walk up to Thiruvananthapuram along with his followers to take oath after victory in the byelection.

Centre increased reservation for minorities: Hebbalkar

Udupi: "The central govt has increased the reservation for minorities in the housing scheme by 5%. The state govt has only approved this. In this matter, BJP members are unnecessarily finding fault," said Laxmi Hebbalkar, minister of women and child development. Speaking to reporters on Friday, the minister said there are no other issues left before the BJP for political debate. Initially, they criticised the guarantee schemes, claiming they would not succeed. Even after we won 136 seats, they said the govt wouldn't last six months, she said. Responding to the NSUI's objection to Hindutva orator Chakravarthy Sulibele's lecture in Kundapura, the minister said, "Chakravarthy Sulibele is a king of lies. He speaks of the Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita, and Mahabharata, but everyone in Karnataka knows the extent of his lies. He is adept at turning black into white and vice versa." "The Congress party has provided all kinds of freedoms, including freedom of speech. In the history of the country, Congress is the party that upheld the Constitution," the minister remarked. "We do not need lessons from Chakravarthy Sulibele. It was learnt from police that Sulibele will be in Udupi for three days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo He is certainly free to travel, but should refrain from making hate speeches, spreading lies, or sowing seeds of discord," said Hebbalkar. Reacting to BJP MLAs' criticisms, the minister said that on one hand, the BJP incites communalism, while claiming they do not. "On the other hand, they oppose the anti-communal forces. When you see BJP legislators with such a mindset, the people of Udupi can understand their mentality," the minister criticised the district's BJP legislators. 'District is prepared' Since there are signs that this year will see more rain than usual, I have instructed to take precautionary measures to control any rain-related incidents, she said. The minister stated that the government is prepared, regardless of the amount of rain. Minister Hebbalkar performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new vaccine storage building on the premises of Udupi District Hospital. Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna, District Guarantee Scheme Implementation Committee chairman Ashok Kodavoor, Udupi block Guarantee Scheme Committee chairman Ramesh Kanchan, Udupi City Municipal Council president Prabhakar Poojary, deputy commissioner Swaroopa TK, ZP CEO Prateek Bayal and DHO Dr Basavaraj Hubballi were present.

Poll claims fly as UDF, LDF battle it out

Kozhikode: A day after the closely-watched and politically-significant Nilambur bypoll, UDF and LDF camps pored over internal booth-level estimates collected from the field and concluded that the outcome would be a favourable one. While UDF reviewed its estimates and claimed that the front would secure a huge majority, LDF came out with a cautious estimate expecting a narrow victory margin. UDF claimed it would win by a big margin of around 10,000 votes. It expects a lead of over 4,000 votes in Vazhikkadavu, nearly the same margin in Moothedam, 1,500 votes in Edakkara and 1,000 votes each in Nilambur municipality and Pothukallu. UDF also expects small leads in Chungathara and Karulayi. On the other hand, LDF's internal feedback showed a tighter contest, projecting a narrow win margin of around 1,600 votes. Left is counting on leads in Amarambalam, Pothukallu, Nilambur municipality and Karulayi to offset UDF's expected lead of 1,500 votes in Vazhikkadavu and other narrow leads in Moothedam and Edakkara, where UDF has historically held a strong political base. LDF is also relying on internal differences and factionalism within the Congress to strengthen its position. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo What makes the race even more complex is independent candidate PV Anvar, whose resignation triggered the bypoll. Early projections from both camps estimated his vote share at 10,000 votes, but LDF sources now believe Anvar could secure well beyond that number, mainly by drawing support from UDF voters. The BJP is expected to get around 7,000 votes, while SDPI is likely to garner around 2,500 votes. For LDF and UDF, the stakes are high. Winning this bypoll will boost morale and set the tone for the upcoming local body elections and the 2026 assembly polls. Echoing UDF's estimates, candidate Aryadan Shoukath said he would win the polls with an 'A Plus grade' and secure leads in all panchayats as well as Nilambur municipality. He added that the front had gained support even from non-UDF voters and predicted a historic majority for UDF on Monday. LDF candidate M Swaraj said LDF expects a strong win in the constituency, noting that there was no anti-incumbency sentiment against the state govt there. IUML national general secretary PK Kunhalikutty said the UDF camp is confident of a comfortable win. He added that IUML has consistently worked with full commitment to secure victory for the UDF candidate. Kunhalikutty dismissed concerns that IUML votes might have shifted to Anvar, saying that even in tougher situations, IUML cadres have never taken such a stand.

Trump Mobile roasted online after coverage map labels Gulf of Mexico, not Gulf of America

Trump Mobile is a new smartphone line made by the Trump Organization for 'real Americans.' The phones were promoted with a coverage map that showed mobile signal areas across the U.S. People online noticed that the map labeled the water near Louisiana as "Gulf of Mexico", not " Gulf of America ." Trump supporters or the Trump family have been pushing the name 'Gulf of America' since early actually renamed the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America' by executive order in January 2025, as stated by Independent. Even Google and Apple Maps changed the name to 'Gulf of America' for a while, even though it got a lot of backlash. Someone on X posted, 'The new Trump Mobile coverage map was released today. It features the Gulf of Mexico!' along with screenshots and videos. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Costco Shoppers Say This Wrinkle Cream Is "Actually Worth It" The Skincare Magazine Undo People mocked the map online Another joked on social media, 'Trump family literally deleted an entire page off their grifting website because it showed the Gulf of Mexico instead of Gulf of America.' A third person added, 'Trump probably doesn't remember by now that he renamed it', as mentioned by Independent. Another user wrote, 'They keep forgetting their own b******.' Someone else chimed in, 'It will always be the Gulf of Mexico. This is culture war BS.' Live Events Map was deleted fast Because of all this backlash, Trump Mobile quickly deleted the map from their website. When you try to see the map now, it just shows a '404 not found' error page. According to Wired, the original coverage map looked very similar to one used by Ultra Mobile, which is owned by T-Mobile, as per a report by Wired. Trump Mobile is run by Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, Trump's eldest sons. The phones will be sold starting August for $499. The phone plans, called T1 Plans, will cost $47.45/month and promise U.S.-based call centers and phones made in America, as per the report by Independent. But experts warn that if they are actually made in the U.S., the phones might end up costing way more than $499. Trump has been pressuring Apple to move manufacturing to the U.S., or else face big tariffs, especially after he declared Liberation Day, as per reports. FAQs Q1. Why are people laughing at Trump Mobile's map? Because it showed "Gulf of Mexico" instead of "Gulf of America," even though Trump officially renamed it. Q2. Is the Trump Mobile phone really made in America? Trump Org says yes, but experts say it could cost much more if that's true.
