May 29—Local searchers from Mekoryuk have recovered the body of one of two men missing after their boat sank off Nunivak Island, Alaska State Troopers said in an online update Thursday.
The three men were out seal hunting in an Ocean Pro boat about 22-24 feet long when it sank in rough conditions in the area of Ikathleewik Bay southeast of Mekoryuk on Monday night. Alaska State Troopers initially said the men were in a smaller boat, but revised the size estimate.
One man, a 19-year-old, was able to swim to shore, troopers said, but two other men weren't found.
Local searchers had been combing the area since Tuesday, with a National Guard helicopter and a U.S. Coast Guard HC-130 from Kodiak helping with the effort on Wednesday, troopers said.
On Wednesday, the local searchers found the remains of Albert Williams, 65, according to troopers.
Samuel Shavings, 72, has not been found.
"The search for Shavings was suspended after extensive search efforts were made by boat and air," troopers said.
The men had been out subsistence hunting for seals, Williams' daughter told Alaska's News Source.
Mekoryuk is a village of about 300 people on Nunivak Island in Western Alaska.

The Michigan State Police is reminding community members to remain vigilant after the U.S. strikes on Iran's nuclear sites. In response to a question about enhancing security at any Michigan locations after the bombing, Michigan State Police Public Information Officer Lt. Mike Shaw said in an email that while the agency doesn't reveal security measures, "we do remind members of the community to remain vigilant in their day to day travels, especially at large events." Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a post on X that she called for a briefing with the Michigan National Guard and the Michigan State Police Saturday night following the bombing. "We're monitoring the situation in Iran closely and taking steps to keep Michiganders safe," she said. Fear and Quiet Resistance Amid a Los Angeles in Turmoil

On Friday, June 6, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers raided a Downtown Los Angeles warehouse and a Home Depot parking lot. As news of the raids spread, protesters tried to block the arrests, clashing with police officers in the streets. Within a few days, rage bubbled into all-out demonstrations. The National Guard was called in miles from my home, and soon my news feeds were filled with images of protesters and law enforcement personnel squaring off on the 101 Freeway. But only a few miles away, the neighborhoods where many undocumented Angelenos live were experiencing these raids differently. In Boyle Heights, a predominantly Latino neighborhood in East Los Angeles, the streets were unusually quiet. In the early afternoon, a time when the neighborhood is typically bustling with activity, the sidewalks and stores were empty. I met Ceasar Sanchez, standing at the entrance of a barbershop on Cesar Chavez Avenue, one of the area's main thoroughfares. Inside, every chair sat empty. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Newsom challenges JD Vance to debate after he calls Sen. Alex Padilla ‘Jose'

Gov. Gavin Newsom challenged Vice President JD Vance to a debate after Vance attacked the governor and maligned Sen. Alex Padilla, referring to him by 'Jose,' during a press conference in Los Angeles Friday. Vance, who was in the city to meet with federal officials after weeks of protests of immigration raids and detentions, repeatedly slammed Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass during the press conference for their stances on immigration and pushback against the administration of President Donald Trump ordering the National Guard and U.S. Marines into the city. When asked about the Trump administration cracking down on Democrats, Vance referenced Padilla's detention in handcuffs last Thursday. 'I was hoping Jose Padilla would be here to ask a question. But unfortunately I guess he decided to not show up because there wasn't the theater,' Vance said. 'It's pure political theater.' Padilla, who is California's first Hispanic senator, was forcibly removed from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's press conference last week after identifying himself as a senator asking a question — though she later claimed she did not know he was a senator — and was handcuffed before being released. 'JD Vance served with Alex Padilla in the United States Senate. Calling him 'Jose Padilla' is not an accident,' Newsom wrote. The Associated Press reported that Taylor Van Kirk, a JD Vance spokesperson, responded by saying of Vance: 'He must have mixed up two people who have broken the law.' Newsom also posted to Vance that it was 'nice of you to finally make it out to California.' 'Since you're so eager to talk about me, how about saying it to my face? Let's debate. Time and place?' Newsom wrote. The governor's press office X account also responded Friday evening, posting an altered photo of Vance at the press conference with a cartoonish version of his face and saying: 'Donald, you should send @JDVance out to California more often. He's absolutely crushing it!' Vance claimed Newsom and Bass 'actively encouraged illegal migration into this community, have strained public services, have strained law enforcement and, really, have offered generous benefits, not to American citizens, but to illegal immigrants to break the law.' Vance also claimed Newsom and Bass 'egged on' violent 'rioters' including encouraging them to harm federal and local law enforcement, which he called 'disgraceful.' Vance said during the press conference that National Guard and military members will stay in the city in case protests 'flare back up.' 'These people need to be stopped,' Vance said of demonstrators.
