‘Truly saddened': Popular Dymocks to close after 18 years

The final chapter is approaching for Dymocks Joondalup, which has announced it will close its doors on June 30 after 18 years of operation. Owners Joanna and Jim Brown, who are moving into semi-retirement, made the announcement on Facebook last week, thanking customers for being part of the bookstore's story. 'We are truly saddened by this closure and want to thank all our loyal book lovers and customers for your incredible support over the past 18 years,' they said. Your local paper, whenever you want it. 'It has been a privilege to be part of the Joondalup community.' Hundreds of local customers flooded the comments section with messages of gratitude and well-wishes. 'Ohhh nooo, I've loved bringing in my granddaughters to buy their favourite books. Good luck everyone, thank you for your service, you shall be missed,' one comment said. Owners, Joanna and Jim Brown opened the store 18 years ago. Credit: Michael Wilson / The West Australian 'Very sad news — Dymocks Joondalup is such a stalwart supporter of local authors and readers, this wonderful place and its expert staff will be greatly missed,' another said. 'Thank you for the many years and lots of wonderful memories,' a third comment read. Despite the Joondalup store's closure, its existing partnerships with the City of Joondalup and Wanneroo libraries, as well as local schools where events such as author meet-and-greets are held, are set to continue. Speaking to PerthNow local newspapers, Ms Brown said they had hoped Dymocks or another owner would take over the Joondalup store, but it proved too difficult to facilitate and ultimately led to the decision to close. 'We love our books and our customers, so this has been a very hard decision for us,' she said. 'Since we made the announcement, we have had lots of people come in over the weekend to show their support. We have been really touched by the community's reaction.' Dymocks Joondalup partnership with the City of Joondalup and Wanneroo's library will continue through their Karrinyup store. Credit: Michael Wilson / The West Australian Ms Brown said part of the decision to close was due to sales stagnating as more people shifted to shopping online, and she urged the community to continue supporting local bookstores. 'It's really hard when people are buying online or from department stores like Big W; we just can't compete with them,' she said. 'Please support physical stores. If they're part of your community, make sure you back them.' Mr and Mrs Brown said they looked forward to welcoming familiar faces at their Karrinyup store. They will also be offering customers free delivery throughout the Joondalup and Karrinyup areas for Click & Collect or phone orders placed with the Karrinyup shop. They have seen thousands of iconic books fill the shelves of their bookstore over the past 18 years, but one truly stands out above them all. 'The seventh and final Harry Potter book quickly became a classic. All of our copies sold out before the release date due to pre-orders,' Mrs Brown said. 'On the day the last book came out, we ran out of stock, and the queues outside the store started as early as five o'clock in the morning. It was just amazing.' When it comes to non-fiction, an autobiography by an Aussie legend was among the store's best sellers. 'Non-fiction biographies, like Jimmy Barnes', were also big hits,' she said. 'One of our most memorable highlights was hosting incredible authors like Jimmy, where we had nearly 1000 people attend our event with him. 'Some of our other most popular authors include crime writers like Michael Connelly and Stephen King, known for his horror novels.' As part of a closing-down sale, Dymocks Joondalup is offering 25 per cent off all stock in-store until June 22.

Woolies shoppers rage over new reward cut

Woolworths has axed a major saving point for Everyday Rewards members, the second within a fortnight. Delivery Unlimited customers will no longer receive double rewards points to their Everyday Rewards accounts from June 1. Delivery Unlimited is a $15 a month subscription which gave customers free delivery on same day or next day orders of $75 or more. Shoppers were notified of the change via email, and took to social media to protest against the changes. 'I signed up for a 1 year subscription for every day rewards just to have then (sic) email me this plus remove the 10 per cent of Big W. What a joke … have emailed them back wanting a refund as they cannot keep up to their side of the deal,' a customer lamented online. Everyday Rewards members are facing a second discount cut within two weeks. NewsWire/ Gaye Gerard Credit: News Corp Australia A Wooloworths spokesperson said Delivery Unlimited is still a great service for shoppers. 'Our Delivery Unlimited service continues to be very popular with customers and with an unlimited number of deliveries for $15 per month or $119 for an annual subscription, it provides great value and convenience to customers,' the spokesperson told NewsWire. 'We are streamlining Delivery Unlimited to focus on the primary benefit for subscribers which is providing timely and convenient delivery. Direct to Boot will also become a complimentary service for members. 'As such we are removing 2x Everyday Rewards points from the program. Instead customers will receive three months complimentary Direct To Boot Now which offers Direct To Boot pick up in less than 60 minutes. Direct To Boot Now normally costs $5 per order. 'We believe Delivery Unlimited still provides compelling benefits to subscribers. However if anyone would like to cancel their subscription they can do so by contacting our customer service team.' Woolworths defended the decision and said great offers are still provided by their rewards programs. NewsWire/ Gaye Gerard Credit: News Corp Australia This comes after Woolworths rewards shoppers threatened to cancel their memberships after the major supermarket axed a Big W discount. From next month, Everyday Extra members will no longer be able to claim 10 per cent off their Big W purchases once per month. 'We're writing to let you know that, unfortunately, from Sunday June 1 2025, the BIG W monthly ten per cent off discount will no longer be part of the Everyday Extra benefits,' an email to customers said. 'Thanks for being an Everyday Extra subscriber and we hope you'll continue enjoying great value from your subscription.' Shoppers flocked to social media criticising the supermarket and threatening to cancel their subscriptions. Yeah, I've just cancelled my subscription. Second reduction in benefits in a year without reduction in cost/replacement of benefit,' a past customer lamented. Many have said they will be unsubscribing from the discount program, and will even shop elsewhere. NewsWire/ Gaye Gerard Credit: News Corp Australia 'This is ridiculous. It's my second year paying for this service … this current subscription year has been terrible. I don't even get to spend X amount for 4 weeks to get X amount of dollars,' one shopper wrote. 'Woolworths are definitely trying to get their money's worth and not for us now. Will look into Coles rewards,' another commented. The changes will heavily impact families who use the rewards system, especially around holiday seasons to stretch their dollar a little more.
