Chelsea XI vs Manchester United: Starting lineup, confirmed team news, injury latest for Premier League today

Yahoo16-05-2025

Chelsea start Tyrique George up front against Manchester United in the Premier League tonight.
The Blues know that victories in their final two league games will secure a top-five finish and Champions League football next season. However, they are without first-choice striker Nicolas Jackson for both games following his red card in last weekend's defeat at Newcastle.
Christopher Nkunku and Marc Guiu are also sidelined, meaning manager Enzo Maresca does not have a recognised striker at his disposal.
Pedro Neto was an option to assume the role, having done so while Jackson was injured earlier this season. However, Maresca's options are also limited out wide by the fact that Jadon Sancho is ineligible to feature against his parent club.
Chelsea therefore turn to youngster Tyrique George. The 19-year-old started both legs of the Conference League semi-final tie against Djurgarden and now gets his chance at Premier League level.
Reece James gets the nod at right-back, with Enzo Fernandez partnering Moises Caicedo in midfield and Romeo Lavia named on the bench.
Starting XI: Sanchez, James, Tosin, Colwill, Cucurella, Caicedo, Enzo, Madueke, Palmer, Neto, George
Subs: Jorgensen, Bettinelli, Badiashile, Chalobah, Acheampong, Anselmino, Gusto, Lavia, Dewsbury-Hall
Time and date: 8.15pm BST on Friday May 16, 2025

Flamengo scores 3 second-half goals to stun Chelsea 3-1 at the Club World Cup

PHILADELPHIA -- Danilo scored the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute and Flamengo scored three second-half goals to move atop its group at the Club World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Chelsea on Friday. Coupled with Esperance's 1-0 win against LAFC in the later group match, Flamengo became the first team in the field to advance to the knockout round. Flamengo's win also kept South American teams undefeated at the Club World Cup in nine matches. Pedro Neto gave Chelsea the early lead. The ball bounced off a Flamengo defender and Neto gained control, charging toward the goal before putting it away in the 13th minute. Flamengo drew even in the 62nd on Bruno Henrique's goal on a tap-in in front of the goal. Moments later, the Brazilian giants took the lead off a corner with Danilo's goal. Wallace Yan all but put the game out of reach for the Blues with a goal in the 83rd. The Blues, the 2021 Club World Cup winner, defeated LAFC 2-0 in their opening match in Atlanta. Flamengo downed Esperance 2-0 in its opener. Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luís currently coaches Flamengo, while former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho made his debut for Flamengo against Esperance. Down just 2-1, Chelsea still had a chance, but Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the 68th with a straight red just four minutes after replacing Liam Delap, who got his first start for Chelsea after making his debut for the Blues in the tournament opener. The Blues currently sit below Flamengo in Group D and can still advance to the knockout round. The final matches will be played Tuesday with Chelsea facing Esperance in Philadelphia and Flamengo meeting LAFC in Orlando, Florida. Henrique was named the Man of the Match, and said the face that there was a large contingent of red-clad Flamengo fans among the 54,019 at Lincoln Financial Field wasn't lost on him or his teammates in the pivotal second half. 'I noticed that we had the advantage. We had the fans on our side,' Henrique said. 'And that's when we started to pressure.'

Virgil Van Dijk's: The Constant in Liverpool's Historic Success of Recent Years

Virgil van Dijk Remains the World's Best Defender Virgil van Dijk's brilliance has become so reliable that it now risks being taken for granted. While new Liverpool manager Arne Slot made headlines by winning the Premier League in his debut season, and Mohamed Salah dazzled once again, Van Dijk was the constant force holding everything together. His influence is quieter now in the wider football narrative, but it remains just as powerful on the pitch. Advertisement In his second season as Liverpool captain, Van Dijk stepped up following Jurgen Klopp's departure and filled the leadership void left by Jordan Henderson. He didn't just cope with the pressure, he excelled under it, guiding Liverpool to a league title with composure, consistency and class. Photo: IMAGO Rock at the Back Van Dijk made 49 appearances across all competitions, anchoring a defence that was often rotated due to injuries and tactical changes. He didn't just survive the chaos, he provided calm through it. While he had the odd slip, such as a mistake against West Ham, his responses were swift, often followed by commanding performances or crucial goals. Advertisement His presence changes Liverpool's entire defensive line. When he is missing, the team visibly suffers. His positioning, reading of the game and aerial dominance are unmatched, making him a truly irreplaceable figure in the squad. Passing Range and Leadership What often goes unnoticed is Van Dijk's incredible passing. His long diagonals to Salah, Diaz or Gakpo are not just clearance kicks, they are measured attacks in themselves. This level of precision turns defence into attack instantly, giving Liverpool a key weapon in transition. As captain, Van Dijk has brought poise and unity to the club's new era. He rallied the players and even urged fans to create a sea of red in support. He's not only a tactical leader, but an emotional one too. Recognition Long Overdue Despite his impact, Van Dijk has not been widely included in Player of the Season discussions. Much of that is due to Salah's consistent brilliance, but it's also a reflection of how fans become desensitised to greatness. Advertisement Van Dijk is not just still world-class — he's still the best in his position. As Liverpool prepare for their future under Slot, Van Dijk's new contract is a massive boost. He remains the foundation of the team and the perfect leader for this next chapter. This is an abridged version; the full article is available on our 'It Was Always… Liverpool' Substack page:

Basildon Council expresses interest in new state-of-the-art sports facility

Potential future Premier League football stars could soon train at a new state-of-the-art facility in Basildon. Basildon Council has expressed interest in a government scheme to bring a top-notch sports hub to the borough. Advertisement The Football Foundation programme has been seeking authorities to partner with to help bring change to the grassroots game by creating a modern sports hub, which would offer top quality sporting facilities all year round. The services supported by the hub would be based on demand in the area, but typically include two full-size floodlit 3G pitches, a car park, a café and changing rooms. Basildon Council has put forward an expression of interest to the Football Foundation, pinpointing potential sites including Eversley Park, Gloucester Park, and Holy Cross Recreation Ground. The programme draws investment from the Premier League, FA, and Sport England. Advertisement Jack Ferguson, councillor responsible for culture, sport, children, and young people, expressed the council's desire to make it a "go-to" destination for sports. He said: "The hubs programme is an exciting prospect for Basildon, which could bring a much-needed boost to the grassroots game, offering a host of other facilities that will benefit the wider community – and who knows, maybe it will produce a future star of the Premier League. "This reaffirms our commitment to create a healthier, happier Basildon and outlines our desire to make our borough a go-to destination for sporting and entertainment facilities." The site would operate on a not-for-profit basis, with the council and other organisations acting as trustees. Advertisement Any extra income from the facility would be funnelled back into local grassroots sports, creating a sustainable future for the industry. Basildon Council is now waiting for the Football Foundation's decision before choosing to submit a formal application.
