Six held for over Rs 38 lakh fraud in rural job scheme using fake muster rolls
Lucknow: The Balrampur police arrested six individuals for embezzling Rs38.49 lakh from the Mahatma Gandhi national rural employment guarantee scheme (MGNREGS) funds. The arrests were made in connection with the alleged misappropriation of funds allocated for the renovation of three ponds in Bishunpur Tantanwa village under Pachpedwa block.
Police said the sanctioned amount for the project was Rs58.34 lakh. The accused allegedly forged muster rolls in the names of workers to siphon off the funds, without executing the work as per official norms. SP Vikas Kumar supervised the probe, leading to the arrests.
Those arrested were Abdul Wahab, Mohd Zuber Khan, Girija Shankar, Atul Kumar Mishra (son of Ram Prakash Mishra, additional programme officer), Pradeep Kumar Chaudhary (son of Ramchandra, junior engineer) and Ajay Yadav (son of Gulab Chandra Yadav, gram vikas adhikari, resident of Belhar, Sahjanwa, Gorakhpur).
Kumar said a formal complaint was submitted by block development officer (BDO) Mohit Dubey. He reported irregularities in the pond renovation project under MGNREGS in Bishunpur Tantanwa village. An inspection revealed that fake construction activities were shown, with expenses falsely recorded to the tune of Rs58.34 lakh.
An FIR was lodged and an investigation found that the accused passed fake work proposals and used fraudulent muster rolls to divert funds amounting to Rs38.49 lakh.

Kumar added that the accused operated in a pre-planned, coordinated manner to loot public funds under the guise of MGNREGS work. "The arrested individuals were found to be involved in preparing forged documentation and disbursing wages for non-existent workers to commit fraud," said Kumar.
Kumar added that police have seized records and investigation is ongoing to identify other possible beneficiaries and verify whether similar frauds occurred in nearby villages. The accused have been booked under BNS and were remanded to judicial custody after being presented in court.

In the wake of a rising number of fatal road accidents involving heavy vehicles, Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar has ordered the seizure of all such vehicles involved in fatal mishaps over the past five years. The vehicle had entered a restricted zone violating the ban on heavy vehicle movement during peak hours. 'Given the alarming rise in fatalities, the city police and RTO will now take joint action. Licenses will be called in and vehicles will be impounded,' said Kumar adding that strict enforcement is necessary to protect public safety and prevent further tragedies. Over the past year alone, Pune recorded 334 fatal road accidents, claiming 354 lives. Alarmingly during the last five months, 129 accidents have resulted in 133 deaths with many of them involving heavy vehicles. The traffic police have already imposed a citywide ban on the movement of heavy vehicles such as multi-axle trucks, containers, trailers, and bulkers with more than 10 wheels from Monday to Saturday between 7 am and 10 pm excluding red zones and specific internal roads. Only essential service vehicles will be allowed entry between midnight and 6 am.

Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar has adopted a stringent approach towards issuance and sanctioning of firearm licences. Over the past 18 months, 404 applications seeking police permission for gun licences were rejected due to non-compliance, and 140 licences were revoked. Only 28 licences have been approved during this period, including 10 on hereditary claims and nine under the sports quota. Gun licences issued from 2021 to 2023 were 659. From January 1, 2024, to June 3, 2025, 572 applications for firearm licences were received by the city commissioner's office and only 28 were approved. June 2025: Sudhir Mahadik‑Deshmukh, 55, an invited guest at a farmhouse in Indapur (near Pune), was shot accidentally in the chest with a licenced pistol belonging to the host during a birthday gathering. UP horror: Private firm employee 'gang-raped' by 3 colleagues; accused lured her with investment promise
BIJNOR: A 25-year-old woman working at a private finance company in Moradabad has accused three of her colleagues of gang-raping and cheating her of Rs 1.1 crore, following which an FIR was registered at Majhola police station. The complainant said she and the accused worked at the same firm. In her complaint, she alleged that one of the men persuaded her to invest her savings in the company, promising huge returns. Trusting him, she invested her money and also mobilised funds from her relatives and acquaintances on his advice. When she repeatedly asked the colleague to return the money, he allegedly kept deferring the payment on one pretext or another. Eventually, on the pretext of returning her money, he invited her to his residence one day. Once she reached his house, the man offered her a drink laced with sedatives. When she lost consciousness, she was allegedly gang-raped by the three men. Moradabad SP (city) Kunwar Ranvijay Singh said based on the woman's complaint, a case was registered under BNS sections 70(1) ( gang rape ), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 127(2) (wrongful confinement), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) and 318 (cheating).
