Tata Sons is actively seeking new directors to fill upcoming vacancies on its board. Former Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth is anticipated to retire in the next few months when he turns 70.
Speth had joined following Cyrus Mistry's removal in October 2016.
With Leo Puri's resignation as independent director in April, sources told ET that one of these positions might be allocated to an executive director from within the group.
Sources indicate that TV Narendran, the CEO and MD of Tata Steel, is a leading candidate for the board position.
Independent director Ajay Piramal, aged 69, is expected to conclude his tenure by mid-next year.
This aligns with Tata Sons' established retirement guidelines. Piramal became a board member in August 2016.
According to the Articles of Association (AoA), executive position holders retire at 65, whilst board-level positions have a retirement age of 70.
Boardroom Shake-up
The board's composition will shift from the structure established by former chairman Ratan Tata in 2016 following Mistry's removal, according to an observer familiar with the group.
Whilst Tata Trusts' board nominees, including chairman Noel Tata, Vijay Singh (76), and Venu Srinivasan (72), face no age restrictions. The independent directors comprise Harish Manwani, Anita M George, and Piramal.
"There are very few senior Tata executives today with the depth of Narendran's experience and leadership," stated a group executive.
Several Tata group veterans, including Bhaskar Bhat, have retired upon reaching superannuation, whilst others such as Harish Bhat and Banmali Agrawala continue serving in advisory positions.
Tata Sons plans to invest ₹30,000 crore ($3.5 billion) in its growing ventures, including Tata Digital, Tata Electronics and Air India, alongside defence and battery operations through equity investments. Executives have confirmed defence operations as a key strategic focus. This investment supplements the group's existing $120 billion commitment towards new enterprises.
Tata Sons advisor Agrawala serves as non-executive chairman at Tata Electronics. Manwani, who previously served as COO of Unilever Plc before joining the Tata Sons board in 2018, is expected to remain until 2027.
Additionally, Tata Sons has initiated proceedings to voluntarily surrender its RBI registration certificate, having cleared over ₹20,000 crore in debt, allowing it to maintain its status as an unlisted, closely held organisation.

Trouble between AI's power couple: What's brewing between Microsoft and OpenAI?

The biggest partnership in the artificial intelligence (AI) world, between Microsoft and OpenAI , is showing signs of cracks. Microsoft invested $1 billion in the ChatGPT maker in 2019, ahead of the generative AI boom . The companies then rode the wave to the top, with the software maker injecting billions more in the company in the following years. But then disagreements arose over controlling AI technology and computing resources, intellectual property rights, as well as OpenAI's organisational transition plans and competitive tensions. These issues have made the once-close partnership shaky, and may fundamentally change it. What's happened? Live Events OpenAI needs Microsoft's approval to complete its transition into a public-benefit corporation. But sources told Reuters the companies have not been able to agree on details even after months of negotiations. Discover the stories of your interest Blockchain 5 Stories Cyber-safety 7 Stories Fintech 9 Stories E-comm 9 Stories ML 8 Stories Edtech 6 Stories Tensions have risen between the two sides after reports emerged that OpenAI is considering a "nuclear option", accusing Microsoft of anticompetitive behaviour. The companies are discussing revising the terms of Microsoft's investment, including the future equity stake it will hold in OpenAI, the report said, adding that the ChatGPT owner wants to modify existing clauses that give Microsoft exclusive rights to host OpenAI models in its cloud. Reuters reported that Microsoft was even ready to walk away from its high-stakes negotiations with OpenAI over the future of its alliance. Windsurf issue The key issue in the dispute is now Microsoft's access to OpenAI's intellectual property. OpenAI even wanted to exclude Microsoft's access to AI coding startup Windsurf, which it had acquired, due to competing products. OpenAI acquired Windsurf, an AI-assisted coding tool formerly known as Codeium, for about $3 billion, marking the company's largest acquisition to date. Microsoft-owned Github offers a competing AI tool for programmers. Investors have also poured money into a new crop of startups offering similar tools, including Anysphere, the startup behind Cursor. Analysts have said that the partnership between the legacy giant and the AI startup was always unstable, with Microsoft testing alternatives and preparing for a way forward without OpenAI.

Stock market today: Nifty50 opens below 25,000; BSE Sensex tanks over 600 points

The market outlook suggests consolidation with expected volatility. (AI image) Stock market today: Nifty50 and BSE Sensex , the Indian equity benchmark indices, tanked in opening trade on Monday following global cues. While Nifty50 went below 25,000, BSE Sensex was down over 600 points. At 9:20 AM, Nifty50 was trading at 24,923.30, down 189 points or 0.75%. BSE Sensex was at 81,762.80, down 645 points or 0.78%. The escalating Israel-Iran conflict and US involvement are expected to influence market performance on Monday. Market analysts indicate that global factors will be crucial, as investors monitor US manufacturing and services PMI data, alongside geopolitical developments. The market outlook suggests consolidation with expected volatility. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited says, 'Even though the US bombing of Iran's three nuclear facilities has worsened the crisis in West Asia, the impact on the market is likely to be limited. The uncertain factor now is the timing and nature of the Iranian response. If Iran targets and damage the US defence facilities in the region or hurts US military personnel seriously, the US response can be huge and this might further worsen the crisis. But the market assessment is that there are limits to what Iran can do against US and Israel. That's why the early market responses - crude prices, US futures, absence of panic in Asian markets - have been muted.' 'Even though the possibility of the closure of Hormuz Strait is a threat, it is important to understand that this has always been only a threat and the Strait had never been closed. The fact is that the closure of Hormuz Strait will harm Iran and Iran's friend China more than anyone else. The market construct continues to favour a 'buy on dips' strategy." Early Monday trading in Asia showed declining US stock-index futures and rising oil prices following US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. Asian stocks showed weakness. Gold prices increased slightly on Monday as investors sought safe-haven assets amidst growing concerns about Middle East tensions, with markets awaiting Iran's reaction to US strikes on its nuclear installations. Oil prices surged on Monday, reaching their peak since January, following America's decision to support Israel in targeting Iranian nuclear installations, raising concerns about supply disruptions. Foreign portfolio investors purchased shares worth Rs 7,940 crore net on Friday, whilst domestic institutional investors recorded net sales of Rs 3,040 crore. Foreign institutional investors reduced their net short positions in the futures market from Rs 96,962 crore on Thursday to Rs 96,368 crore on Friday.
