Centre clears Rs 193 crore for women's hostel, drinking water at Karnataka's Narasapura iPhone facility
Bengaluru: The Centre has sanctioned Rs 193 crore under the State Capital Investments Scheme for constructing working women's hostels and water facilities supporting iPhone contract manufacturer Tata Electronics in Kolar district's Narasapura industrial area. Tata Electronics acquired Wistron, a Taiwanese contract manufacturer, for $125 million two years ago. T he Karnataka govt approved the detailed project report and allocated funds for water supply infrastructure in the Narasapura industrial zone and neighbouring villages. According to sources, the accommodation facilities will house 6,000 women workers, with the project completion scheduled in 18 months. "In Narasapura industrial area, Tata Electronics (Wistron) is setting up a large manufacturing unit, where about 18,000 women workers are expected to be employed. Therefore, to address the drinking water requirement of the women workers and surrounding villages, the proposed drinking water scheme is necessary. In the absence of such a project, there will be difficulty in operating women-centric industrial units. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo After reviewing this, the proposal is approved," the state govt's notification said. An email sent to Tata Electronics didn't elicit a response till the time of going to the press. The central govt has already released Rs 127 crore to Karnataka's SNA (Single Nodal Agency). Karnataka industries minister MB Patil told TOI that the initiative is aimed at encouraging greater participation of women in the workforce. As part of the state's latest industrial policy, 10-15% of industrial areas have been earmarked for developing housing facilities, with a focus on supporting women to remain in the workforce. Recently, Patil took to social media to say Apple's contract manufacturing partner Foxconn will start production of iPhones at Devanahalli in June. Foxconn's 300-acre Devanahalli unit, within the Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR), is being established with an investment of Rs 21,911 crore. It is expected to be the largest iPhone manufacturing facility outside China. The Economic Times reported recently that the Foxconn facility will prioritise accommodation for its female workforce, with dormitories for 30,000 employees. Initial govt approval indicated 50,000 job opportunities. Karnataka maintains one of India's highest female labour participation ratio with a 31.5% female work participation rate, according to the 2021-22 Periodic Labour Force Survey. The state's workforce comprises 41% in agriculture and 21.5% in industry. Rural women predominantly work in agriculture, while urban women work in manufacturing and services, as per IWWAGE's report. Recent statistics from Sumita Dawra, labour ministry secretary, showed that the women worker population ratio increased from 22% in 2017-18 to 40.3% in 2023-24, while the female labour force participation rate rose from 23.3% to 41.7% during the same period. Foxconn exports 97% of India-made iPhones to US during March-May
Foxconn, the contract manufacturer of iPhones in India, exported 97% of its India-made iPhones to the US market between March and May 2025. According to a report, the company exported iPhones worth $3.2 billion from India during this period, with an average of 97% of shipments headed to the US — up significantly from an average of 50.3% in 2024. Meanwhile, Tata Electronics, another major iPhone manufacturer in India, shipped nearly 86% of its production to the US during March and April 2025, compared to only 52% in 2024. This development supports Apple CEO Tim Cook's statement made in May 2025, in which he announced that the majority of iPhones sold in the United States during the June quarter (April to June 2025) would be manufactured in India. Speaking during the company's second-quarter earnings call, Cook also mentioned that while China remains Apple's primary manufacturing base for most products sold outside the US, India is becoming increasingly important for the US market.

India Becomes Crucial Node in Apple's Tariff-Battling Export Strategy
Foxconn's latest customs data confirms that from 1 March to 31 May 2025, an overwhelming 97 per cent of all iPhones assembled in India were destined for the United States, totalling $3.2 billion in exports—nearly double the 50 per cent average seen throughout 2024. May alone accounted for almost $1 billion, the second‑highest monthly export value ever recorded—just behind March's $1.3 billion. This sharp shift reflects Apple's concerted effort to navigate escalating U.S. tariffs targeting Chinese exports, under a policy framework that now imposes 55 per cent duties on Chinese-made goods. India, by contrast, is subject to only a 10 per cent base tariff—with ongoing negotiations aimed at averting a proposed additional 26 per cent reciprocal levy. Apple's strategic manoeuvres go well beyond plant output figures. In March, it chartered aircraft to ship around $2 billion worth of iPhone models—including the 13, 14, 16 and 16e series—from Chennai to the U.S.. Concurrently, it has lobbied Indian customs officials to streamline clearance time at Chennai Airport from approximately 30 hours to just six. ADVERTISEMENT Tata Electronics—the smaller of Apple's Indian manufacturing partners—also ramped up its U.S.-bound export rate, shipping an average of 86 per cent of its March‑April output abroad, compared to just 52 per cent across 2024. Analysts at Counterpoint Research estimate that Apple's production capacity in India will contribute 25–30 per cent of global iPhone shipments by the end of 2025, up from 18 per cent in 2024. Industry insiders note that Tamil Nadu has become India's iPhone manufacturing epicentre, hosting some 70–80 per cent of domestic output through facilities run by Foxconn, Pegatron and Tata, and leverages major infrastructure investments to support scale‑up. The strategic pivot has not gone unnoticed in Washington. Donald Trump voiced disapproval in Doha, urging Apple to prioritise U.S.-based manufacturing over Indian operations. He cast the policy shift as unwelcome, stating he did 'not want you building in India' and emphasised domestic production, although analysts warn it would be economically unfeasible—potentially tripling iPhone prices—if Apple were to replicate its Chinese supply chain in the U.S.. Despite vocal criticism from Trump, India's government continues to cultivate its appeal as a high‑tech manufacturing hub under the 'China Plus One' model. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration has facilitated green corridors and industrial investments, particularly in Tamil Nadu, aiming to amplify smartphone exports. The state's industrial minister and private‑sector leaders have pointed to India's growing workforce and operational readiness as key strengths. However, the pathway is not without hurdles. High duties on imported components continue to hinder cost efficiency, even as trade negotiations between New Delhi and Washington seek to secure tariff relief. India remains more expensive than other manufacturing hubs unless concessions are secured. Still, the numbers speak convincingly. Foxconn's India exports hit $4.4 billion to U.S. shores in just the first five months of 2025—already exceeding the full‑year 2024 tally of $3.7 billion. Simultaneously, India's mobile‑electronics exports raced ahead, reaching approximately $12.8 billion in 2024, with iPhones now powering nearly 70 per cent of that figure. India's climb in Apple's supply chain mirrors broader geopolitical shifts—illustrating how trade pressure, tariff regimes and national strategies are reshaping global manufacturing. As Apple continues to amplify operations in India, the region is fast developing into a pivotal node in the technology economy—offering a compelling alternative to the long-established China corridor amidst deepening trade tensions.
