Dallas Stars re-sign Matt Duchene to a 4-year, $18 million contract

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Stars have re-signed forward Matt Duchene to a four-year contract worth $18 million.
General manager Jim Nill announced the deal Thursday. Duchene will count $4.5 million against the salary cap through the 2028-29 season.

'We are thrilled to have Matt back with our organization,' Nill said in a statement. 'As our team's leading scorer last season, he helped to solidify our forward group while also providing invaluable leadership off the ice and in the community. The fit with Matt and our team has been seamless from the start, and we're looking forward to continuing to pursue our shared goal of bringing a championship to Dallas.'
Duchene was a point-a-game scorer — exactly 82 in 82 — in his second season with Dallas. He had just one goal and five assists in 16 playoff games as the Stars reached the Western Conference final before losing to Edmonton.
Now 34, Duchene is going into his 17th season in the NHL. He previously played for Colorado, Columbus, Ottawa and Nashville since making his debut in 2009.

Always the bridesmaid, never a multiple Stanley Cup champion. And as far as relationships go, Corey Perry has to have a love-hate one going with the NHL's most prized possession at this point. A veteran of 20 NHL seasons — going back to when the team that drafted him 28th overall in 2003 was still calling itself the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim — Perry tasted victory from Lord Stanley's Mug during his sophomore season in the league back in 2006-07. And he hasn't been without his chances lately when it comes to securing a second. Fast-forward to these playoffs, which saw Perry hit his 40th birthday milestone, and he has reached the Stanley Cup Final for the fifth time in the past six years. Aside from falling in back-to-back finals with the Oilers, Perry was runner-up in 2021-22 with the Tampa Bay Lightning, 2020-21 with the Montreal Canadiens and 2019-20 with the Dallas Stars. That's five Stanley Cup eliminations in a span of six years with four different teams for a player during a span of his career where most are left wishing they could still be playing. 'Yeah, it's devastating. I mean, five of the last six, it doesn't get any easier,' Perry said. 'It just doesn't feel real. 'But you get ready and you move on and you get ready for next season. Hopefully, you have that opportunity to do it again.' Maybe one day, when the dust has settled on his career, Perry will be able to see it as a pretty amazing ride. 'Maybe in 10 years when I look back,' he said. 'Whenever I'm done playing.' But he's not at that point just yet, as he's already turned his attention to next season. 'I just want to win,' said Perry, who was on a one-year, $1.4-million contract. 'Hopefully it's here and hopefully we can figure something out and get something done, because this is a good team and there are some good things ahead.' The Dallas Stars were the latest, getting forward Matt Duchene, 34, re-signed to a four-year, $18 million contract on June 19. He led the Stars with 82 points in 82 games and set a career best with 52 assists. The Chicago Blackhawks had signed leading goal scorer Ryan Donato to a four-year, $16 million contract on June 18. Duchene's four-year contract is a change from his recent deals, though it is team-friendly. After the Nashville Predators bought him out in 2023, he signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Stars and had a 65-point season. He signed another one-year, $3 million deal before averaging a point a game last season. 2025 Draft Targets For The Jets At Pick 28
Joshua Ravensbergen / James Doyle Now that a Stanley Cup winner has been determined, the event to look forward to is the NHL Draft, which commences on Jun. 27-28 in Los Angeles, where the Winnipeg Jets will make the 28th overall selection in the first round. Advertisement Although the Jets don't have the deepest prospect pool, they are in a better situation than several teams. Nikita Chibrikov and Elias Salomonsson highlight the prospects who are closest to being NHL-ready, as soon as next season. Brad Lambert, Brayden Yager, Colby Barlow, Zach Nehring and Alfons Freij headline the skilled prospects who could become key contributors sometime in the future. In the 2024 NHL draft, the Jets selected Freij in the second round before selecting three consecutive forwards, those being Kevin He in the fourth round, Markus Loponen in the fifth and Kieron Walton in the sixth. In fact, Freij is the lone defenseman to be drafted by the Jets in the previous two drafts. With a fairly strong balance in their prospect pool, the Jets can afford to select the best available, a strategy that tends to bode well for most teams selecting late in the first round. The Athletic's Corey Pronman released his latest mock draft and had the Jets selecting Henry Brzustewicz, a 6'1, 18-year-old defenseman who scored 10 goals and 42 points in 67 OHL games with the London Knights. Brzustewicz won back-to-back OHL championships and a Memorial Cup playing alongside Jets prospect Jacob Julien. Advertisement Bleacher Report's Lyle Richardson has the Jets selecting Blake Fiddler, a 6'4, 17-year-old right-handed defenseman. Fiddler spent the 2024-25 season with the Edmonton Oil Kings, where he scored 10 goals and 33 points in 64 games. Despite his big frame, Fiddler is a great skater, using it both offensively and defensively. He's strong on the puck, making plays on retrievals and as a playmaker in the offensive zone. The Athletic's Scott Wheeler predicts the Jets draft Bill Zonnon, a 6'2 winger who recorded 28 goals and 83 points in 64 QMJHL games. Zonnon is a hard worker who plays an attentive defenseman game even as a winger. Offensively, he's a playmaker, creating passing lanes with neat zone entries off the rush. While Wheeler believes the Jets could do with a defenseman, he believes Zonnon would be a good fit for the Jets. TSN's Bob McKenzie has the Jets selecting goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen. Ravensbergen is a 6'5, 18-year-old right-handed catching goaltender. He posted a 33-13-4 record with the Prince Town Cougars, routinely showcasing his calmness in the crease. The North Vancouver native uses his size to be positionally sound, but he moves very well in his crease. The Jets are very thin in net in terms of prospects, and Ravensbergen could be the successor to Connor Hellebuyck. The only thing that is certain in this draft is that it'll be full of surprises. Following picks one and two, which are nearing a guarantee to be Matthew Schaefer and Michael Misa, no other pick is set in stone, which opens up the possibility for so many trades. The Jets selecting at 28 isn't a foregone conclusion as they could easily trade back, looking to regain draft capital, considering they are making just five selections in this draft.
