Stars trade Mason Marchment to Kraken for 2 draft picks, free up cap space
The Dallas Stars traded winger Mason Marchment to the Seattle Kraken on Thursday night for two draft picks, starting the process of freeing up cap space as they enter the busy part of the NHL offseason. The Kraken took on all of Marchment's $4.5 million cap hit for next season, according to league sources, and sent a 2026 third-round pick and a 2025 fourth-round pick back to Dallas in return. WHO'S READY FOR MARCH(MENT) MADNESS?! 😤 Mason Marchment's hard hits, grit and skill are joining the #SeaKraken following a trade with the Dallas Stars → — Seattle Kraken (@SeattleKraken) June 19, 2025 Marchment is coming off consecutive 22-goal seasons for the Stars, but scored just one goal in 18 playoff games during their run to the Western Conference final this spring. He signed with the Stars as a free agent in 2022 and put up 56 goals and 131 points in 211 games — reaching the third round of the playoffs each year. Advertisement The cap-clearing trade came just hours after Dallas signed veteran forward Matt Duchene to a four-year extension carrying a $4.5 million AAV. More moves are expected to come in the days and weeks ahead as the Stars look for more roster flexibility. Dallas is already within $5 million of the league's $95.5 million cap ceiling for 2025-26 — leaving them with less room to maneuver than every other team. The Kraken have oodles of cap space to work with and are looking to take a step forward after two years outside of the playoffs. They were drawn to how the 6-foot-5 Marchment can help alter the look and feel of their forward lines. 'I think Mason has a unique combination of size, skill and strength,' Kraken GM Jason Botterill told 'He works well down in the corners and around the net and that's an element we want to continue to add to our group here.' The 30-year-old Marchment has appeared in 302 NHL games for Toronto, Florida and Dallas, putting up 76 goals and 189 points. He's eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in July 2026.

Stars' Matt Duchene signs four-year deal; other players on free agency list
Stars' Matt Duchene signs four-year deal; other players on free agency list Show Caption Hide Caption Florida Panthers capture second straight Stanley Cup The Florida Panthers beat the Edmonton Oilers to win their second-straight Stanley Cup. Sports Pulse NHL general managers are beating the deadline and getting their pending free agents re-signed before the July 1 start of free agency. The Dallas Stars were the latest, getting forward Matt Duchene, 34, re-signed to a four-year, $18 million contract on June 19. He led the Stars with 82 points in 82 games and set a career best with 52 assists. The Chicago Blackhawks had signed leading goal scorer Ryan Donato to a four-year, $16 million contract on June 18. Duchene's four-year contract is a change from his recent deals, though it is team-friendly. After the Nashville Predators bought him out in 2023, he signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Stars and had a 65-point season. He signed another one-year, $3 million deal before averaging a point a game last season. 'As our team's leading scorer last season, he helped to solidify our forward group while also providing invaluable leadership off the ice and in the community," general manager Jim Nill said. "The fit with Matt and our team has been seamless from the start, and we're looking forward to continuing to pursue our shared goal of bringing a championship to Dallas." Edmonton Oilers forward Trent Frederic, a trade deadline acquisition, could be getting closer to a deal. "We're talking, my agent's talking," he said during the Oilers' end-of-season media availability. "Hopefully, something will get done here." The New York Islanders' Kyle Palmieri and Tampa Bay Lightning's Yanni Gourde re-signed earlier. Matt Duchene signs four-year extension worth $18 million with Dallas Stars
Dallas Stars forward Matt Duchene has signed a four-year contract extension with the team, general manager Jim Nill announced on Thursday, June 19, 2025. The deal carries an average annual value (AAV) of $4.5 million and will run through the 2028-29 NHL season. PuckPedia states the contract includes a full no-move clause for the first two seasons. In the final two years, it shifts to a modified no-trade clause, which allows Duchene to submit a list of five teams to which he can be traded. 'We are thrilled to have Matt back with our organization,' Nill said. The 34-year-old from Haliburton, Ontario, recorded 30 goals and 52 assists for 82 points in 82 games this past season. It marked the second time in his career he reached the 80-point mark, and the third time he scored 30 goals in a single season. He finished second in team scoring behind newly-acquired forward Mikko Rantanen. Live Events In the 2023-24 season, Duchene had tallied 25 goals and 40 assists for 65 points, after inconsistent years with Nashville and the Ottawa Senators. In the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Duchene added one goal and five assists for six points. The Stars reached the Western Conference Final but were eliminated by the Edmonton Oilers for the second consecutive year. Throughout his NHL career, Duchene has played 1,138 games, scoring 371 goals and adding 520 assists for 891 points. He has also contributed 37 points in 69 playoff appearances.

Matt Duchene commits to Dallas Stars with new four-year, $18 million deal
Image Via Twitter (Matt Duchene commits to Dallas Stars with new four-year, $18 million deal) This deal epitomizes loyalty and ambition: forward Matt Duchene has signed a four-year contract for just short of $18 million with the Dallas Stars. Instead of testing the waters of free agency on July 1, this 34-year-old veteran chose to extend his tenure with the organization, being the top point-getter for the team in the recent NHL season. His continued presence stabilizes the offensive core and only adds strength to its championship aspirations. Matt Duchene commands the superior role in the Dallas Stars through his leadership and experience What a fascinatingly late-blooming affair for Duchene in Dallas! Duchene single-handedly created the offensive core of the Stars in 2017-18 with 82 points in 82 games, including 30 goals and 52 assists. However, his contribution diminished in the playoffs while the tall-tale leather drove him six points in 18 games. Yet his handling and other intangible characteristics kept on counting. Having been present all season, much of the time, he found his way onto the ice, creating plays for the Dallas Stars, who reached the third round of the playoffs for the second year running to punish and humble on the mark. Since Matt Duchene has been a part of five NHL teams (Colorado Avalanche, Ottawa Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, and currently thinking of joining the Stars), he brings along tons and tons of experience: 891 points in 1,138 regular-season matches. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo His versatility as a player-as both a scoring threat and a setup man, allowed him to blend seamlessly into Dallas's setup, adding scoring and some leadership to the table. General Manager Jim Nill stated that the new partnership was almost assured to succeed because of Duchene's immediate contributions both on and off the ice. Duchene's staying power within the Stars' long-term plans was cemented by his influence within the locker room and in the community beyond his numbers. With the choice to pursue a new contract and stay, Duchene demonstrates that his ambitions go beyond himself and are motivated by the prevention of seeing his team compete for a Stanley Cup. With the baggage of age slightly coming in the way, there is growing urgency for Duchene to chase that title. When Duchene said there was "more behind than ahead," he was conveying the view that the decision to remain in Dallas was steeped in both the emotional and strategic. For Duchene, this is no longer just about the personal wins, it's all about winning as a team. Stars re-sign Matt Duchene, locking up top scorer at bargain $4.5 million cap hit
Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill didn't have any cap space, but he had everything else that Matt Duchene wanted. In the end, that was enough to keep his leading scorer in Dallas for four more seasons. The Stars announced Thursday that they have re-signed Duchene, who posted 82 points in 82 games this past season, to a four-year deal with a cap hit of just $4.5 million. Even given Duchene's age, 34, it's a bargain-basement price for a proven player coming off that type of season. Just a day earlier, the Chicago Blackhawks re-signed Ryan Donato, coming off a career-high 62 points (more than twice his previous high), to a four-year deal with a $4 million cap hit. Advertisement The signing is sure to spark more conversation about the inherent advantage tax-free states such as Texas have, but as Duchene himself said during the playoffs, the chance to win and the laid-back lifestyle in Dallas suited him perfectly at this stage of his career. In a conversation with The Athletic last month about the pending unrestricted free agency of Duchene and captain Jamie Benn, Nill had no doubt they'd be back. 'They want to be here, I want them to be here,' he said. 'And then we've got to find a number that works for both.' The signing leaves the Stars with virtually no remaining cap space for Benn, who is eligible to sign an incentive-laden over-35 contract, or Mikael Granlund, who was acquired via trade midseason, or even pending RFA Mavrik Bourque, a 23-year-old whom the organization has high hopes for. With 25-year-old Jason Robertson entering the final year of his contract, carrying a $7.75 million cap hit, there has been speculation that he could be on the trade block to make the math work. Duchene is a 16-year NHL veteran coming who seems to have gotten better with age. In 2021-22, he had 43 goals and 86 points with the Nashville Predators, and he's scored 55 goals over his two seasons in Dallas. He had a very frustrating postseason, though, as the Stars lost in the Western Conference final for the third straight season. In 18 playoff games, he had just one goal and five assists. This, after scoring just two goals in 19 playoff games in 2024. Duchene was generating plenty of chances, but felt snake-bitten this spring. 'A lot of people just look at numbers,' he said during the conference final. 'I like where I'm at, I like where my game's at. I'm playing better than I was last year at this time, a lot better offensively and I'm more myself. I think it's the same player I've been in the regular season. Then you add in the little nuances of playoff hockey which I had last year, feel good about that. It's frustrating because it's the most important time of year and it's the last time you want to go through it. At the same time, I always focus on process and if your process is good, the results come eventually.' Really nice deal for the Stars here. Matt Duchene has been a pivotal part of the team's attack, scoring at a 70-plus point pace with Dallas over the last two years. Even at a four-year term, $4.5M looks like a steal. — dom 📈 (@domluszczyszyn) June 19, 2025
