TDSB passes budget for 2025-2026 with plan to eliminate $34.4M deficit
Trustees for the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) have approved a budget for 2025-2026 that includes a plan to balance the board's books over the next two years. The plan includes a number of cost-saving measures to eliminate a $34.4 million deficit, including a pause on issuing new Chromebooks for students in the coming school year in favour of recirculating devices returned by graduating Grade 12 students, a news release from the board said. It also includes a $9.5 million spending cut in operating expenses for central departments of the board that will have "limited impact" on services. Fees will also rise for some continuing education programming, the TDSB said. At a meeting in April, trustees heard the school board was facing a $58-million deficit for 2025-2026, with staff looking at a variety of options to balance the budget. Since then, trustees have passed more than $20 million in cuts, resulting in a current deficit of $34.4 million, a spokesperson for the school board said. One of the cost-cutting options on the table was closing school pools the board doesn't lease out, which would have saved an estimated $12.8 million. However that's not happening after public outcry. Pools and aquatics instructors will continue to be available to students and community members for another year, the TDSB said in a Thursday news release. Board staff are working on privately leasing more pools while also working with the City of Toronto on the use of TDSB pools, the release says. The budget must now be submitted to the Ministry of Education by June 30 for final approval.

Woman charged, suspect sought in Pickering fire police now deem homicide
A woman has been charged and another suspect is being sought in relation to a fatal Pickering house fire that police are now deeming a homicide. Around 2:20 p.m. on June 11, police responded to a house fire in the area of Primrose Court and Fairport Road, according to a Thursday release from Durham police. A 69-year-old woman was located dead inside the residence. Following a post-mortem, Durham police's homicide unit took over the investigation. Police now say the death was the Durham region's third homicide of 2025. On Tuesday, a 34-year-old Pickering woman was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder, police say. She was held for a bail hearing. Police say they have identified another suspect, who remains outstanding, in the ongoing investigation. Investigators say they believe the incident was isolated and there is no threat to public safety. Anyone with more information is asked to contact police or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.

Humming noise ‘dealt with' NextStar Battery Plant
A helicopter hovering near E.C. Row Expressway and Banwell Road is helping install equipment at the new battery plant in Windsor, Ont., on Monday, Nov. 18, 2024. (Bob Bellacicco/CTV News Windsor) A city councillor has confirmed that the humming noise coming from NextStar Battery Plant has been 'dealt with'. Ward 7 councillor, Angelo Marignani said he was getting complaints from Forest Glade residents about a 'tonal hum'. An investigation revealed the noise was coming from an air purification system. The plant installed insulating blankets around the exhaust vents, dampening the sound. In April, the plant discussed the sound, turning off the air purification system to temporarily stop the sound. At that point, they discussed the blankets, awaiting a report from consultants before moving forward.
